UK Mulling Bailout for Tech Firms After Silicon Valley Bank Collapse

Authorities in the United Kingdom are considering a possible bailout for tech firms after the collapse of the British branch of the Silicon Valley Bank.

Jeremy Hunt, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, is reportedly mulling a possible bailout for tech firms and startups affected by the collapse of the Silicon Valley Bank UK, a subsidiary of America’s Silicon Valley Bank (SVB).

The failure of SVB represents the second-largest failure of a bank in U.S. history, only beaten out by the collapse of Washington Mutuals during the 2008 financial crisis.

According to a report by the BBC, there is now significant fear about the knock-on effect the bank’s collapse could have on startups in Britain, with many firms set to lose large sums of money after the Bank of England declared that SVB UK would enter insolvency on Friday.

As a result, the Treasury is now reportedly aiming to offset the damage done by the bank’s collapse, with Hunt telling the public broadcaster that authorities are considering various ways of rescuing the tech firms affected.

One such rescue plan even involves providing an emergency cash lifeline for companies hit by SVB going under.

“We want to find a way that minimises or avoids all losses to those incredibly promising [firms],” the Chancellor said, arguing that while the impact on the United Kingdom’s overall economy is expected to be minimal, SVB’s collapse would nevertheless risk wiping out many of the country’s budding tech enterprises.

Meanwhile, the Treasury is reportedly putting plans in place to meet the immediate needs of the firms affected by the crisis, with a statement made early Sunday morning emphasising that the entire British government were taking the matter seriously.

“The government is treating this issue as a high priority, with discussions between the Governor of the Bank of England, the Prime Minister and the Chancellor taking place over the weekend,” the statement read.

“The government is working at pace on a solution to avoid or minimise damage to some of our most promising companies in the UK and we will bring forward immediate plans to ensure the short term operational and cashflow needs of Silicon Valley Bank UK customers are able to be met,” they added.

SVB’s collapse has left many working within the realms of tech and venture capital in shock, with the bank seemingly going from a rock-steady financial institution to a car wreck in a matter of days.

The bank’s collapse has also reportedly left many major tech companies in the lurch, with some major multinationals having bank balances numbering in the hundreds of millions within SVB at the time it went under.

There also appears to be some fears that SVB may not be the end of the story, with Reuters reporting European bank stocks falling amid fears regarding the crisis.

“The market is treating this as a potential contagion risk,” one strategist explained. “It makes sense to me that a remote probability of a U.S. banking system-wide crisis should also come with a small probability of contagion to Europe.”

SVB International Fallout: UK and EU Lenders Lose 30 Billion Overnight as ‘Panic’ Spreads

SVB International Fallout: UK and EU Lenders Lose 30 Billion Overnight as ‘Panic’ Spreads

The fallout from the run on the Silicon Valley Bank in California went international overnight, with British and European Union lenders seeing nearly £30 billion wiped off their portfolios and the Bank of England stepping in to take over the insolvency process for the British arm of SVB to protect the deposits of British firms tied to the bank.

Since Friday, the Stoxx Europe 600 banks index, which also includes leading British lenders, saw a mass sell-off in the wake of the collapse of the Silicon Valley Bank, the largest American bank failure since the 2008 financial crisis. In total, the European-UK banking index saw a one-day decline of 3.8 per cent, with €33.5 billion (£29.6/$35.6 billion) being wiped off their balance sheets.

Some of the United Kingdom’s largest banks saw their shares fall significantly, with HSBC declining by 4.6 per cent, Lloyds Banking Group falling by 3.3 per cent, and shares in NatWest going down by 2.5 per cent, The Times of London reports.

British-based investors in SVB have already reportedly failed to withdraw their funds from the UK-based branch of the investment bank, sparking fears that tech start-ups could potentially go under if the government doesn’t intervene to save the bank.

The British tech start-up lobby group said that there is a sense of “panic” among its members, with executive director Dom Hallas saying: “We know that there are a large number of start-ups and investors in the ecosystem who have significant exposure to SVB UK and will be very concerned.

“We have been engaging with the UK government including Treasury and No 10 about the potential impact and I know that work has been going on overnight on policy options,” he added.

In response to the failure and the potential of contagion, the Bank of England — Britain’s equivalent of the U.S. Federal Reserve — announced in a late-night statement on Friday evening that it is planning to use its bank insolvency scheme to put the British branch of SVB into resolution, which would allow for depositors to receive up to £85,000 in the coming days from the government’s deposit insurance programme.

An administrator would then be put in charge of the insolvency process to divvy up the remaining UK assets between its creditors and large depositors. According to a report from the Financial Times, the financial advisory firm Interpath has been rumoured as a potential candidate for the administration process, however, this has yet to be confirmed.

Attempting to quell the panic, the BoE said that “SVB UK has a limited presence in the UK and no critical functions supporting the financial system.”

The California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation had described SVB as being in “sound financial condition” before the run on the bank, which saw customers withdraw some $42 billion, resulting in the bank having a negative cash balance of $958 million.

While the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) in the United States pledged that all insured deposits in the bank will be honoured, this may not be a huge comfort to many of the bank’s customers, given that reportedly only seven per cent of SVB deposits are insured.

The failure of the United States’ 16th-largest bank has already begun to see calls for a federal bailout, which would once again see average Americans send their hard-earned tax dollars to some of the wealthiest in the country instead of letting the creative destruction of capitalism run its course.

Former Democrat presidential candidate Andrew Yang said that either the Treasury Department or the State of California should step in, arguing: “In the absence of some kind of action you’ll see thousands of mass layoffs and defunct companies, a wiped out generation of start-ups, huge problems in [California] in particular and a spreading financial contagion that will infect a host of regional banks at a minimum.”

Besides the risk of financial contagion, establishment figures on both the left and right have argued that it is necessary for national security to bailout the bank to prevent its tech start-up customers from going bust and thereby putting the United States at a disadvantage in the tech race against the likes of Communist China.

There has been some pushback, however, against the idea of bailing out the California-based bank, including from Congressman Matt Gaetz, who said: “If there is an effort to use taxpayer money to bail out Silicon Valley Bank, the American people can count on the fact that I will be there leading the fight against such a bailout,” adding: “The financial arm of Silicon Valley has just been severed before our very eyes.”

Republicans pointed to the disastrous economic policies of the Biden administration and the ensuing ‘Bidenflation’ for triggering the bank’s failures, while other conservatives noted that the Silicon Valley Bank likely deployed the use of woke Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) scores in its operations, meaning that the bank may have prioritised left-wing causes instead of focusing on financial viability.

Education Today is Barbarism

Professor James Tooley, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Buckingham, discusses the role of education in the modern age, and the relationship between parental and government oversight in our education systems.

Buckingham University is the oldest of only six private higher education institutions in the UK that award degrees. It started with an idea in 1969 that the country should have a university free from state funding and state regulation.

The Birth of a Private University

Seven years later, the university was opened by Margaret Thatcher in 1976. At the time she was the leader of the opposition and three years out from becoming prime minister of the United Kingdom.  This is part of what she said in the inauguration speech for the university:

To a free people, accustomed to a great richness of private initiative, there is something undesirable, indeed debilitating about the present mood in the country in which so many look not to themselves or their fellows for new initiatives but to the state…

I, as a politician must not prescribe to you. Independence is not a gift, it is not something that governments confer but something that the people enjoy and use…

Unless we are worthy and able to take advantage of a freedom not yet extinguished in our land, we shall become pale shadows like civilisations before us who are eventually thrust aside and disposed of by more vigorous rivals.

What a powerful philosophy! It is wonderful to hear a politician extolling the virtues of freedom of thought and action, with no need or desire for government control over education.

In Loco Parentis

James extolled the virtue of ‘in loco parentis’:

The term “in loco parentis” is a Latin phrase that translates as “in place of a parent” or “instead of a parent” and refers to how schools and school administrators are expected to act with reference to students and other minors. In other words, the employees of a school are charged, by the parents of the students, to act on their behalf while the students are there.

In other words, the educational institution is primarily responsible for carrying out the wishes of the parent. The phrase is used to help the teacher make a judgement call: ‘What would the parent do in this situation? They are at work, I have the responsibility for their child — I need to act in loco parentis’.

John followed up with his phrase that ‘governments should be downstream from culture, not the other way about’. In other words, the government’s primary responsibility is to listen to the culture and enact what is best, rather than to dictate what they believe is best for the people.

The Difference Between Boys and Girls

Then the conversation moved on to the proportion of young people that should go to university in any given society. From my own experience, I have seen governments seek to push this proportion as high as possible to minimise youth unemployment statistics. But is university the best avenue for every young person?

James talks about the shortage of skilled tradespeople, electricians, plumbers, and welders. He argues that university is not the best pathway for these invaluable members of society. Their discussion goes on to cover the alarming dropout rate from the education of white males in the USA, with the effect that this push towards university has now created an underclass of disaffected, underproductive, white young males intent on destabilising society.

The discussion also covers the styles of learning that have become most prevalent in universities. There are now fewer high-pressure summative exams that favour boys’ learning styles, and more small-scale continuous assessments favoured by girls, arguably disenfranchising the boys.

Low-Cost Private Education

In addition to his role as Vice-Chancellor of his university, James has also pioneered some astonishing work on the demand for and viability of low-cost private education, firstly in the developing world and more recently in the West.

His research, in some of the most dangerous places on earth, found that upwards of 70% of children in developing world nations are being educated in private schools. These schools might have been started by a passionate mother with a teaching gift who then established a school around her as her own children grew.

Or the school might have been a tutor group that was set up to help more senior students pass public exams, then it grew a school, backwards, down through the grades. While yet other schools have been established as small businesses, so-called ‘for profit’, but only generating enough income for the founder to clothe, house and feed his own family.

James recounts his own experience in Durham, England, where he established a low-cost private school. The fees are £3,000 per student per year. The class sizes are 20, therefore generating £60,000 per year, £30,000 for the teacher’s salary, typical for the UK, and £30,000 for buildings, utilities and resources. The low-cost model works, and they don’t need or want government involvement or interference.

Education Should Be the Foundation of Civilisation

The developing world demonstrates that without the intervention of governments, parents can make education happen. James Tooley has demonstrated that it can also happen in the West without the intervention of the state. And in this regard, Margaret Thatcher extolled the virtues and advantages of freedom of choice for parents in the education of their children.

It seems to me that the only motivation for state control of education is to control and homogenise society by dumbing down education, alongside the removal of debate.

Education must provide the tools to think and learn, rather than telling children what is right and wrong. The latter is for the parents to teach in the home.

Sadly, Mrs Moira Deeming MP, Liberal Member for the Western Metropolitan Region, Melbourne, Victoria, had to give up her teaching career on account of excessive state control of education. In her maiden speech to parliament, she highlights the excesses and evils that result from disproportionate state control of education.

UK Govt Aimed to Use ‘Fear/Guilt’ to ‘Frighten’ Public Into Obeying Lockdown: Leaked Messages

UK Govt Aimed to Use ‘Fear/Guilt’ to ‘Frighten’ Public Into Obeying Lockdown: Leaked Messages

The British government aimed to “frighten” the general public into obeying the lockdown regime during the COVID pandemic, leaked messages have revealed.

Leaked messages seen by the British press have revealed how the British government aimed to use “fear” and “guilt” to force mass compliance with the country’s lockdown regime.

In particular, then-Health Secretary Matt Hancock appeared to be at the centre of the campaign — nicknamed “Project Fear” by pundits — with the then-Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, also being described as jumping in and out of lockdown “fascism” throughout the pandemic.

According to a report by The Telegraph, the 100,000 leaked WhatsApp messages have shown how those inside Westminster and Whitehall aimed to twist data into making the pandemic look more severe, seemingly hoping it would increase voluntary compliance with lockdown rules and even increase support for further restrictions.

In one exchange sent in December 2020, Hancock discusses how best to replace talk of the Conservative Party’s Brexit failings within the media with fear about the pandemic, seemingly suggesting a strategic drop of news regarding a new variant of the virus in order to heighten people’s fear response.

“We frighten the pants of everyone with the new strain (sic),” he said in a chat with a Department of Health media advisor, before going on to ask when exactly the state should “deploy” the new variant of the virus to maximise impact and best fight off anti-lockdown elements within both the Tory Party and Britain’s Mail on Sunday newspaper.

Simon Case, who as Cabinet Secretary is Britain’s top civil servant, appeared to display similar sentiments in other messages, telling Hancock that “ramping up messaging [with] the fear/guilt factor [is] vital” at the beginning of 2021.

“Mr Hancock and his advisers did not even try to imagine how the tactics they were gleefully discussing to achieve ‘proper behaviour change’ would affect the most vulnerable in society,” Isabel Oakeshott, the journalist who first leaked the messages, said regarding the then-Health Secretary’s actions.

In particular, Oakeshott highlighted the severe impact the government’s lockdown rules had on the mental health of children, discussing in detail the suicide of one 15-year-old boy who had his life upended by the government restrictions.

The boy’s family is said to have been put under extreme pressure by “over-zealous council officials” who shut down local amenities, eventually forcing the teenager and his family to move to another part of the country.

However, the family was then reportedly unable to find a new school for the teen, who was at this point struggling mentally due to the impact of lockdown.

Eventually, with news of another lockdown on the cards, the boy left his home, telling his mother he was going to the local stores, but never returned.

He was reportedly found “hanging from a tree” three days later.

Hancock and his team were far from the only government officials trying to push Britons into harsh lockdown restrictions, with Boris Johnson also repeatedly sending WhatsApp messages supporting restrictions.

Early on in August 2020, Johnson was reportedly sceptical about pushing lockdowns, saying that even the elderly would likely prefer for England to remain open considering the suspected mortality rate of the disease.

“If I were an 80 year old and I was told that the choice was between destroying the economy and risking my exposure to a disease that I had a 94 per cent chance of surviving I know what I would prefer,” he wrote in one message.

However, the PM is later seen agreeing in messages with officials supporting greater lockdown efforts, with Johnson ultimately being responsible for multiple serious COVID lockdowns in 2020 and 2021.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Johnson’s sister, Rachel Johnson, described her brother as frequently being “bounced” between anti-lockdown beliefs and hardcore “Covid-sanitary fascism” by the data presented to him by those working under him, adding that he ultimately seemed to do what the “gibbering control freaks” in the office wanted.

England Bans Violent ‘Transgender’ Male Inmates from Women’s Prisons

England Bans Violent ‘Transgender’ Male Inmates from Women’s Prisons

Violent male criminals who claim to be “transgender” women will be banned from female prisons from Monday, Britain’s Justice Secretary has claimed.

Justice Secretary Dominic Raab has announced that males incarcerated for committing violent crimes in England and Wales will not be allowed to be housed in women’s prisons, even if they claim to be “transgender”.

Although Raab claims otherwise, the changes to the English prison regime appear to be in response to the controversy in Scotland surrounding “Isla Bryson”, a biological male convicted of two rapes who was sent to a women’s prison after claiming to be transgender.

With the British government having already promised to ban biological males entering women’s prisons if they still have male genitalia or if they have committed a sexual offence, for the most part, Raab has now announced that the ban will extend to all violent transgender criminals.

Writing on Twitter, the Justice Secretary touted the change as being “common-sense”, arguing that it would ” improve safety for prisoners across England and Wales”.

“We are very clear that from next week we will introduce new rules which means that any trans offender with their male genitalia intact or who have been convicted of a sexual offence and, adding to that, if they have been convicted of a violent offence, they will not be allowed into the female prison estate,” he told broadcaster Sky News on Sunday.

Even under this ban, however, dispensations will reportedly be available for some transgender male prisoners who wish to be housed in women’s prisons, with ministers being able to sign off on allowing a male who identifies as a woman to be housed in a facility for biological females should they deem it fit to do so.

Raab was also reportedly keen to emphasise that the changes to the prison system were — despite the timing — supposedly not in response to the infamous Isla Bryson scandal.

Born Adam Graham, Bryson was convicted of raping two women last month while he identified as a man, with his defence even trying to claim that his transition was reason to see him acquitted of the charges.

Once convicted, the original plan was to hold Bryson in a segregated part of a women’s prison, with it even being suggested that he could be moved into the main part of the prison should he be judged as not being a threat to the biologically female prisoners.

Such a suggestion was eventually shot down though after the story gained traction in the British media, with many pundits and members of the public expressing concern that Bryson’s presence could endanger women.

Despite the political backlash though, and the subsequent tightening of prison rules, Raab was keen to emphasise that the Conservative (Tory) Party are actually very much pro-transgenderism.

According to the Justice Secretary, the Tories want to take a “liberal, sensitive, tolerant approach to the LGBT community as a whole and in particular the trans community” — though it is unclear whether this is a position shared by the party’s perennially ignored base of activists and voters.

Raab’s desperation to suck up to advocates of transgenderism is ultimately unsurprising, considering his party’s track record, with the infamous Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS) at Tavistock rising to prominence on his party’s watch.

The National Health Service (NHS) outfit is now supposedly being shuttered after a report deemed its medical approach to treating children with gender dysphoria to be putting them at risk — although a report in The Times earlier this month revealed that is in fact still operating and still referring children for trans hormone drugs, despite much sound and fury in the press about it being closed down last year.

Buckingham Palace is empty and has been for a while just like the White House. What do they know?

Jim Crenshaw – February 22nd, 2023

That we don’t know? What are they expecting? Worse yet, what are they planning? They emptied out the palace before they emptied out the White House. It is my thoughts that we have already lost our government and been folded into the new world order and they are now really getting serious about killing us off and enslaving us. All of this while most of society is walking down the train tracks deaf and blind to the toxic train approaching them at high speed. Most will never know what hit them. The problem is they are dragging us down the tracks with them.
