Tree Of Life Families Contradict Pennsylvania Governor’s Claims They Oppose The Death Penalty

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, who is rumored to have national political ambitions, claims he reversed himself to oppose the death penalty after talking to families of victims of the Tree of Life mass shooting, but 9 of the 11 victims’ families say they support the death penalty.

In 2018, in one of the deadliest attacks motivated by antisemitism in American history, a gunman opened fire in the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh during a morning worship service, killing 11 members of the three congregations that met there.

Nearly one year after the shooting, federal prosecutors announced they would seek the death penalty for alleged shooter Robert Bowers, who faces a 63-count indictment. At the time, Shapiro was Pennsylvania’s attorney general and told the public “the killer deserved to be put to death.”

“For more than a decade, including when I assumed office as Attorney General, I believed that the death penalty should be reserved for the most heinous crimes – but that it was, indeed, a just punishment for those crimes,” Shapiro told an activist crowd at Mosaic Community Church in West Philadelphia on Feb. 16.

Now governor, Shapiro announced mid-February that he won’t just extend his predecessor Tom Wolf’s moratorium on execution warrants, he will also work with the state’s General Assembly to wipe the death penalty from Pennsylvania law “for good.” He claimed his flip-flop would “make our system more fair and more just” and clear his conscience after his son asked him why it’s okay to use death as punishment.

The Democrat credited the families of victims of the Tree of Life shooting for his change of mind.

“I’ve spoken to victims, to families, to advocates, and to community leaders. I listened to the members of the Tree of Life community and was blown away by their courage and their fortitude. They told me, that even after all the pain and anguish, they did not want the killer put to death.  He should spend the rest of his life in prison they said, but the state should not take his life as punishment for him taking the lives of their loved ones,” Shapiro said. “That moved me. And that’s stayed with me.”

During a segment with CNN’s Jake Tapper about his 180, Shapiro once again attributed his decision to the family members who lost their loved ones during the shooting.

“I witnessed the courage and the grace of the families in Pittsburgh, who had a loved one killed while they worshipped, who said to me, ‘please, please discourage them from pursuing the death penalty,’’ Shapiro said. “If they could take that position after suffering what they did, then I certainly needed to rethink my position and I did.”

Despite Shapiro’s claims, nine of 11 of the victims’ relatives favor execution if the accused shooter is found guilty. In a strongly worded letter to the editor of the Pittsburgh Jewish Chronicle in November 2022, relatives of the murdered Bernice and Sylvan Simon, Cecil and David Rosenthal, Rose Mallinger, Joyce Fienberg, Richard Gottfried, Daniel Stein, and Melvin Wax chastised locals for suggesting the accused criminal should not die for the massacre.

“These views do not represent the vast majority of the victims’ families; they are, in fact, contrary to our views,” the families wrote. “The opinion the writer has stated is their opinion and theirs alone. Please don’t tell us how we should feel, what is best for us, what will comfort us and what will bring closure for the victims’ families. You can not and will not speak for us.”

Accepting a guilty plea from the alleged shooter, the relatives noted, “will rob us of our ‘day in court’ and will prevent the Justice Department from punishing the perpetrator to the full extent of the law, as we have sought for the past four-plus years.”

“We, the undersigned, will feel further violated by letting the defendant have the easy way out. His crimes deserve the death penalty,” the families concluded.

Only one of the victims’ family members, Miri Rabinowitz, wife of Dr. Jerry Rabinowitz, publicly opposed the death penalty for the antisemitic murderer because she didn’t want to “relive the horrific circumstances of Jerry’s murder through a trial.”

Her pleas for lifelong incarceration for the alleged murderer were joined by leaders of two of the three congregations that met in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood synagogue: Rabbi Jonathan Perlman of New Light Congregation and his wife, who met with and wrote the Trump administration’s DOJ about their concerns, and President Donna Coufal of the Dor Hadash Congregation, who begged the DOJ to spare her congregation from more attention than it already received.

The family of victim Irving Younger appears to have never taken a public stance on the death penalty and Rabbi Jeffrey Myers of Tree of Life Congregation refused to commit to one side of the debate.

Contrary to Shapiro’s claims on national television, what the Tree of Life families and survivors believe about whether Bowers should face death if he is convicted is at best mixed. As the victims’ families stated in November, “most families of Pittsburgh synagogue victims support the death penalty for the shooter” and refusing to grant them that will “cause further harm to the victims’ families and the community as a whole.”

Bowers’s trial is expected in April of this year. If he is found guilty of the crimes alleged in the indictment by a jury in his first trial, he will proceed to face a second panel of jurors, who will determine whether his crimes fit the punishment of execution.

The defense previously stated that if the death penalty is removed from the list of punishments Bowers may face, he will plead guilty and take life in prison without trial. So far, the Biden administration’s DOJ has kept with the Trump administration’s rejection of that offer.

Illinois Has All The Gun Laws Republican Senators Caved To Push States Into, And That Didn’t Stop The Highland Park Killer

Illinois Has All The Gun Laws Republican Senators Caved To Push States Into, And That Didn’t Stop The Highland Park Killer

In a bizarre move, Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart told the public and the press on Wednesday that he believes red flag laws in Illinois are “strong” even though the state with some of the strictest gun laws in the country failed to stop a 21-year-old shooter from murdering seven people at a July 4 parade and injuring at least 30 more.

While announcing seven counts of first-degree murder charges against Robert Crimo III for attacking paradegoers in Highland Park, Illinois, over the long weekend, Rinehart praised his state’s gun laws and called for a national ban on certain types of firearms.

“Illinois has a strong red flag law that keeps the community safe and respects everyone’s rights. We must vastly increase awareness and education about this red flag law called the Illinois Firearm Restraining Order,” Rinehart said.

According to Rinehart, the red flag law was designed to “ensure the safety of the individual and those around them” by confiscating guns and preventing certain people from buying guns.

“It allows individuals to stabilize their treatments — excuse me, stabilize their behavior — seek treatment, and access other resources that our community must invest in to give those who need help,” Rinehart continued. “Separate from these red flag laws, which are very powerful in Illinois, we should also ban assault weapons in Illinois and beyond.”

The first and most pressing question of all: If Illinois gun laws are so good, why wasn’t Crimo, who was labeled a “clear and present danger” to the community long before he shot up the parade and fled wearing women’s clothing, stopped by the state? If red flag laws are the answer to preventing deadly shootings, which we know they aren’t because they lack due process and are susceptible to politically motivated exploitation, why didn’t they stop Crimo (or any other shooters in states with red flag laws)?

All the stereotypical warning signs designed to trigger some sort of intervention were there. Crimo had a troubled history of posting violent content online that “reflected a plan and a desire to commit carnage for a long time in advance.” He had mental health issues that culminated in an attempted suicide in April 2019. He also had multiple run-ins with local law enforcement, who, at one point, communicated their concerns about him to state police. Yet he still freely carried out a horrific act.

Rinehart’s anti-gun tirade doesn’t make sense unless you come to terms with the fact that his plea for national gun-grabbing is a solely political talking point, not one that is designed to effect change that would actually stop bloodthirsty villain wannabes in their tracks.

Even if “assault weapons” were magically wiped off the face of the earth, as Rinehart seemed to suggest, who is to say that a clearly disturbed individual such as Crimo wouldn’t have come at the July 4 crowd with a knife, dagger, sword or even a vehicle, like the Christmas parade massacre in Waukesha, Wisconsin?

After all, Crimo was in possession of 16 knives, a dagger, and a sword in September 2019 when he threatened to “kill everyone” in his home. Law enforcement confiscated those weapons before returning the knives to the then-teenager’s father who “claimed the knives were his and they were being stored in the individual’s closet for safekeeping.”

Crimo’s father went on to sponsor his son’s December 2019 application for a firearm owner identification card, which is required for gun possession by the state of Illinois, and the state police (yes, the same department that knew Crimo was deemed a “clear and present danger”) approved it.

But even if Crimo’s dad hadn’t sponsored the application or the state police had rejected it, there was nothing stopping him from purchasing more blades or seeking out guns from the gangs who sustain the massive weapons black market in the crime-ridden Chicago just 20 miles south of his residence in Highland Park.

The warning signs about Crimo were there but the truth of the matter is that no amount of “awareness” about red flag laws or bans on “assault weapons” will stop criminals with detailed plans to hurt, kill, and destroy.

Recall that 14 Republicans in the Senate and 14 Republicans in the House recently voted to push gun restrictions like those found in Illinois in other states. They claimed that these laws would make communities safer and prevent future tragedies like previous shootings Buffalo, New York, and Uvalde, Texas. But they were clearly wrong.

There’s nothing praiseworthy about red flag laws or gun control when one of the strictest firearm regulatory states repeatedly failed to stop Crimo from carrying out a tragic and fatal attack. Begging for the federal government to remove Americans’ option to protect themselves against freaks doesn’t stop shootings, it disarms law-abiding Americans and leaves too much room for bureaucratic error.

Police: Highland Park Suspect Was Dressed like a Woman when He Opened Fire on Parade Goers

Police: Highland Park Suspect Was Dressed like a Woman when He Opened Fire on Parade Goers

Police have indicated the Highland Park shooting suspect was dressed like a woman when he opened fire on July 4th parade goers from a rooftop.

NBC News reports that Lake County Major Crimes Taskforce’s Chris Covelli said the suspect “pre-planned this attack for several weeks.”

Covelli also noted that the suspect carried out the attack while “dressed in women’s clothing and investigators…believe he did this to conceal his facial tattoos and his identity and help him during the escape.”

He said once the suspect stopped shooting he “exited the roof, dropped his rifle and he blended in with the crowd and he escaped.”

Breitbart News reported that six people were killed and at least 24 people were injured in the July 4 attack.

Shortly after the attack police were able to announce a description of a person of interest.

NBC Chicago noted law enforcement was looking for “a white man between 18 and 20 years old with a small build and longer black hair.”

Police quickly enhanced their description, noting they were seeking a 22-year-old white male driving a silver Honda vehicle. They also released a license plate number tied to the person of interest’s vehicle.

USA Today reported that the person of interest was arrested just before 7 p.m. Monday.

Following the arrest, Chris Covelli said, “This individual is believed to have been responsible for what happened.”

After Two Philadelphia Cops Were Shot, Mayor Can’t Wait To Abandon Crime-Ridden City So He Can ‘Enjoy’ ‘Stuff’

After Two Philadelphia Cops Were Shot, Mayor Can’t Wait To Abandon Crime-Ridden City So He Can ‘Enjoy’ ‘Stuff’

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney had some choice words after two local law enforcement officers were shot at a July 4 parade but none of his anger had to do with addressing the rising crime that has plagued the City of Brotherly Love for years.

As a matter of fact, the “defund the police” Democrat’s reaction to the news that two police officers were in the hospital was to express excitement that his mayoral term is ending soon because “there’s not an event, or a day, where I don’t lay on my back, and look at the ceiling, and worry about stuff.”

“I’ll be happy when I’m not here, when I’m not mayor, and I can enjoy some stuff,” Kenney continued.

Specifically, Kenney’s “waiting for something bad to happen all the time” has to do with guns, which he claimed will forever bear the blame for problems in the nation “until Americans decide that they want to give up the guns and give up the opportunity to get guns.”

So while the Philadelphia Police Department struggles to grapple with injured officers and the city’s record-high homicide rate which is on track to be much worse in 2022, the mayor is whining about gun control.

Philadelphia’s crime problem has been going on for years, but Kenney has repeatedly failed to address it. As a matter of fact, during the George Floyd riot era, Kenney made things worse by declining to increase the police budget to reflect the law enforcement needs in his city.

After facing pressure to defund the police, Kenney and the city council’s preliminary budget in 2020 sought to cut police funding by $14 million at a time when rioters were ransacking and looting small businesses after George Floyd’s death.

One year later, Kenney froze the police budget to prevent any increases in spending on the department.

To put it in perspective, in 2015, the year Kenney was elected, the PPD had close to 6,600 officers and at least 800 civilian employees. In the first quarter of 2022, the department only had 5,900 sworn officers and 600 civilians despite a significant increase in violent crime across the board.

As a result of Kenney’s neglect, Philly is suffering a “historic shortage of police.” Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said that those officers who are still on the department’s payroll are “bearing heavier case loads, suffering from burnout, and experiencing increased stress.”

Maybe that’s why more than 63 percent of the city’s residents think Philly is “on the wrong track” and more than 70 percent of those surveyed listed increasing crime, drugs, and other public safety problems as their top issues of concern.

Kenney appears to care about crime and cops in his city as much as he cared about Philadelphia’s Covid-19 lockdown rules, which isn’t saying much. The officers injured on July 4 are well on their way to recovery but the city may not be unless the next Philadephia mayor prioritizes supporting the police instead of defunding them.

Two Police Officers Shot During Philadelphia Fourth of July Fireworks Show

Two police officers were shot and hospitalised on Monday evening during a Fourth of July fireworks show in Philadelphia, sparking a stampede of fleeing attendees.

Following the deadly mass shooting at an Independence Day parade in Chicago in which six people were killed and dozens were left injured, two police officers were shot and injured in front of the Philadelphia Art Museum while they were on duty at the Fourth of July festivities in the historic city.

Both officers sustained minor injuries and have since been released from the hospital, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

One officer suffered a graze wound to the shoulder, while the other officer suffered a similar would to his forehead, with the bullet being found in his hat.

At a press conference outside of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philidelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said: “It is miraculous, the fact that the round stopped in his hat… It initially went up inside, hit his forehead, and then the round stopped in his hat.”

“We’re all just extremely grateful that this wasn’t worse than what it was,” she added.

Outlaw said that there have currently been no arrests and no suspects have been detained as of 12:30 am Tuesday morning. It is also unclear whether the officers were deliberately targetted or if it was the result of stray gunfire.

The shooting, which occurred around 10 pm, resulted in a stampede of people attempting to flee the Benjamin Franklin Parkway where they had gathered to watch the fireworks display above the Art Museum. The shooting followed a free concert in the city, featuring R&B singer Jason Derulo.

Chaotic footage posted on social media showed hundreds of people fleeing from the shooting as fireworks continued to blast off in the background. It has not been reported that there were any injuries as a result of the stampede.

Criticising the Supreme Court for striking down a New York law that placed limits on carrying guns in public, Philidephiphia Mayor Jim Kenney said: “The weather was beautiful, the concert was beautiful, but we live in America and we have the Second Amendment and we have the Supreme Court of the United States telling everybody they can carry a gun wherever they want.”

“We have to come to grips with what this country is about right now. We had a beautiful day out there today except for some nitwit … who has a gun and probably shouldn’t have had it.”

The shootings in Philadelphia followed a deadly attack in Chicago earlier in the day when six people were shot and killed and a further 24 people were injured. Police have arrested Robert E. Crimo III in connection to the shooting.

Teen Killed, Officer Injured at D.C. Juneteenth Shooting

Teen Killed, Officer Injured at D.C. Juneteenth Shooting

A 15-year-old boy was reportedly killed at the Juneteenth shooting in Washington, DC, on Sunday, while a police officer and two other adults were injured.

According to NBC Washington, the shooting appeared to “break out after two separate incidents, following what D.C. Chief of Police Robert Contee called an ‘unpermitted event’ at around 6 p.m. held by the group Moechella.”

The Moechella music festival featured go-go bands celebrating the recently enshrined holiday, Juneteenth, which commemorates the emancipation of slaves in the United States.

The shooting occurred near 14th & U Street NW. Police say the wounded officer was shot in the leg. The extent of the injuries for the other two victims remains unknown at this time, though police say they are in a stable condition.

“At one point, there was some type of ‘incident or fight’ among the crowd that was broken up, authorities said. Then, after a ‘secondary incident,’ people started to flee, and some had their legs and ankles ‘trampled,’” noted NBC Washington.

“While officers shut down the event and paramedics treated victims who suffered injuries running away, the gunfire that would claim the life of a teen and injure three others erupted,” it added.

As Breitbart News previously reported, police are searching for “a black male about 5’4″ with curly hair wearing all black.”

Video shared across social media shows massive crowds running away in fear as shots broke out:
