Three former chairs of the Democrat’s campaign arm, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), have sounded the alarm as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) continues to see her extremely slim majority slip away.
As the midterms are quickly approaching, former chairs of the DCCC are sounding the alarm for the incumbent Democrats trying to remain in the majority. With the Republicans looking to regain the House, the Republican campaign arm, the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), has hammered the vulnerable Democrats with its hopes to win back seats.
In recent weeks, multiple Democrats have called it quits on remaining in the House as the chances of staying in the majority are quickly fading.
Former Rep. Steve Israel (D-NY) led the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in 2012 and 2014. He told the New York Times, “The two biggest headaches of any cycle are redistricting and retirements, and when you have both in one cycle, it’s a migraine.”
When new districts are created and official, candidates are waiting to see where the district they will be running in ends up. Israel continued to say, “It’s like going to war on a battlefield, but you don’t know where you’re fighting, when you’re fighting, or who you’re fighting.”
Another former DCCC Chairman, Rep. Martin Frost (D-TX), said to Politico when it comes to redistricting and retiring:
It’s very early in the game, but retirements are a concern. I would hope the party is taking them very seriously and setting out to recruit strong candidates,” he continued, noting that early retirements at least give the party more time to find replacements.
Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-IL), the previous DCCC Chairwoman and a top lieutenant of Pelosi, announced that she would not be seeking reelection last week. Bustos narrowly won her seat in 2020. Former President Donald Trump previously won Bustos’ district in both of his elections in 2016 and 2020. Illinois also lost a congressional seat after the Census, though the Democrats’ supermajority controls redistricting for the 2022 election.
Besides Bustos, there is growing list of vulnerable House Democrats that are facing tough reelections who have also taken an exit from the House. In the case of some Democrats, many allegedly have been quietly saying hopes of finding new candidates to run for the vacated seats are failing, saying it will likely cost seats.
Rep. Charlie Crist (D-FL), who was previously Governor of Florida, called quits on the House Tuesday. He announced he would be running to get his old job back as he leaves his vulnerable House seat behind. This will be the third time Crist will run for governor of Florida. During his tenure as governor, Crist switched from Republican to Democrat.
Pennsylvania Democrat Reps. Conor Lamb and Chrissy Houlahan are both considering Senate bids for the open seat after Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA) retires in 2022. Many Democrats allegedly believe with Lamb and Houlahan leaving, “they would be unable to field a candidate who could hold onto his district next fall, likely costing them a seat.” In addition, “Republicans control the state legislature, but Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf can veto their maps.”
Earlier this year, Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick (D-AZ) and Rep. Filemon Vela (D-TX) announced their intent to retire, which would open the seats up for a competitive race.
Democrat Rep. Tim Ryan (OH), failed presidential hopeful, launched his Senate campaign last week to replace retiring Republican Sen. Rob Portman (OH).
In addition to this, the failed special election Democrat candidate Jana Lynne Sanchez from last Saturday’s election did not receive enough votes to make it into the runoff. She used her loss to send a strong message to the Democrats. She believes if the Democrats continue to fail at getting “voters out” and “don’t organize and prepare” for the 2022 midterms, there will “be a major setback” for the Democrats trying to enact House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) partisan socialist agenda in Washington, DC.
The Republican campaign arm previously created an “Exit List,” which was comprised of vulnerable Democrats the Republicans are looking to pick off in the midterms. The NRCC recently just expanded their list, adding an additional ten seats. Republicans hope to pick up all of these seats and take back the majority.
The NRCC April battleground survey shows Republicans are projected to regain the House majority in the midterm elections. The survey also found vulnerable Democrats have an uphill battle defending their seats after voting for “Pelosi’s socialist agenda.” In addition, the survey finds Pelosi is the most unpopular politician in the country, with a 56 percent unfavorable rating.
Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN) said Tuesday that the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) will expand their list of target Democrat-controlled districts in their mission to take back the House majority.
The NRCC released its increased list of districts to target after the U.S. Census Bureau announced many swing and Democrat-leaning districts will lose a congressional seat. The reapportionment data will reshape the makeup of congressional districts in a way that could create an opening for Republicans to flip enough districts to take back the House majority during the 2022 midterm elections.
Emmer said that Republicans continue to play on offense now that Democrats have to defend their “socialist” agenda.
“Republicans are on offense all across the country,” Emmer said in a statement Tuesday. “Every House Democrat is facing an uphill battle having to defend their toxic socialist agenda that prioritizes trillion-dollar tax hikes on the middle class, opens our borders, closes our schools and defunds the police.”
The new targeted districts include:
Rep. Ami Bera (D-CA)
Rep. Jim Costa (D-CA)
Rep. Raul Ruiz (D-CA)
Rep. Marie Newman (D-IL)
Rep. Dan Kildee (D-MN)
Rep. Kathleen Rice (D-NY)
Rep. Paul Tonko (D-NY)
Rep. Joe Morelle (D-NY)
Rep. Brian Higgins (D-NY)
Rep. Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA)
Republicans announced plans to target 47 Democrats representing battleground districts, Democrats that underperformed compared to the 2020 presidential ballot, and those that may be impacted by redistricting.
Further compounding Democrats’ problems, several Democrats have announced that they will either retire or seek higher office.
Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-IL), a former Democrat Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) chair and a top ally of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), announced last week that she will not seek reelection.
Reps. Conor Lamb (D-PA) and Tim Ryan (D-OH) reportedly plan to run for higher office and Reps. Ann Kirkpatrick (D-AZ) and Filemon Vela (D-TX) intend to retire.
An NRCC poll released in April found that Republicans are projected to win back the House.
The survey said in battleground districts, 54 percent want a “Republican who will be a check-and-balance to Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats’ agenda in Congress.”

Illinois Democrat Congresswoman Cheri Bustos announced Friday she will not run for re-election next year after serving a decade in the lower chamber.
“Today, I’m announcing I will not seek reelection after completing this term,” Bustos said in a video statement. “I feel it’s time for a new voice.”
Bustos, the voice who chaired the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) last cycle lost the Democrats 15 seats in November, putting Republicans just five seats away from reclaiming the House majority in the next election cycle. The president’s party historically fares poorly in the new administration’s first midterms. Democrats expected gains rather than losses last fall.
“As for the next chapter, it will always be my goal to think big and deliver results,” Bustos said, revealing no details for future plans. “In time, I’ll share more on where that will take me.”
The congresswoman representing northwest Illinois had already resigned from her position leading the DCCC.
According to Politico, Bustos wrote to colleagues days after the election she was “gutted at the losses we sustained” in a letter declaring her decision to not seek another term as chair of the party’s House campaign arm.
“Cheri Bustos made the right decision to retire rather than face defeat in 2022,” National Republican Congressional Committee Spokesman Mike Berg said in a statement following Friday’s announcement.
Bustos’ upcoming exit puts Illinois’ 17th Congressional District in play next year with no incumbent with a D+3 rating on the Cook Partisan Voter Index, a moderate score. President Barack Obama carried the district handily in 2012 by 17 points, while President Donald Trump captured it in 2016 by less than one.
Monica de la Cruz told Breitbart News Saturday it is “disturbing” Rep. Vincente Gonzalez (D-TX) had an account at the Bank of China being a U.S. congressman.
De la Cruz ran against Gonzalez in Texas’ 15th Congressional District, coming within a few thousand votes of winning the district. The seat has not been represented by a Republican in the 120 years seat has been around. De la Cruz said, “never say never because, in 2022, we will unseat Vincente Gonzalez,” which would make her the first Republican in Congress from the district.
The host Matthew Boyle brought up Breitbart News exclusive report on Gonzales, showing he had holdings worth more than $100,000 in the Bank of China, a state-owned bank run by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), which he put in his financial disclosure forms filed with the clerk of the U.S. House of Representatives.
In his 2017, 2018, and 2019 filings, the disclosure documents show Gonzalez reported the holdings valued at between $100,001 and $250,000 in the Bank of China. Each report includes a disclosure that Gonzalez earned between $2,501 and $5,000 in interest each year from the Bank of China account.
Boyle mentioned the Bank of China is very public about its support of the communist dictator Xi Jinping and his plans for the world. He asked what de la Cruz’s thoughts are on Gonzalez’s financially being tied up to the Bank of China.
De la Cruz told Boyle, “it is very disturbing that a U.S. congressman would have an account with one of our greatest adversaries. Look, not only does he have the accounts, but here are the deeper questions. Where did that money come from? Where did he get this $250 thousand, up to $250 thousand that was in this account? Did he pay taxes on this account? Not only that, but as you mentioned, this account is, and the Bank of China is very clear on the mission they support, which is the Communist Party of China.”
She continued, “when we look at this party, China is accused of very, very serious crimes. Mass rapes of the Uyghur woman in a sinister program designed to promote ethnic unity. I mean, we’re talking about re-education camps, forced abortions, now what is a U.S. congressman doing with a bank account going to support these types of policies?”
Boyle asked about Gonzalez’s response to these reports, saying he’s refused to do any type of interview with Breitbart News after multiple requests, even refusing to do interviews with his local stations. He posed the question, is closing the account enough?
“Look, no American should be satisfied with that type of response. He owes it to his constituents, to the American people, to let them know why he had that account, where this money came from, and to make a public response on it. The fact that he is hiding and has not come out and vocally said why he has that money supporting these communist efforts is unacceptable,” de la Cruz said.
When Boyle asked about de la Cruz’s perspective on trusting China and mentioned the CCP covering up any information on numerous accounts of what happened and how coronavirus started, also bringing up the former CDC Director Robert Redfield, saying he believes the coronavirus escaped from a lab in Wuhan, China, which was partially funded by the American taxpayers.
De la Cruz responded, “China is a great threat to our American security. They have been very vocal in saying they want to be in control and take over the world. We see them in our health care. We see them in our technology. I mean, they are our great adversary. We should be very concerned about the Chinese government, and even more, we have a congressman that has his money in the bank of China. So absolutely, you are correct. Coronavirus that came from that lab in China has devastated our communities, our small businesses, and our American economy. So again, very disturbing this congressman, a U.S. representative, would have up to $250 thousand in the Bank of China.”
Boyle mentioned the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) putting Gonzalez on their “Exit List,” saying what if he retired before the next election? Would de la Cruz be ready to go against any Democrat if he retires?
De la Cruz believes that Gonzalez will go ahead with his bid for reelection in the midterms coming up in about 18 months. De la Cruz said the Democrats in his country are upset with his “lack of stance” on the illegal immigrants coming through the border. De la Cruz says she is ready to head against any Democrat that will be running against her in 2022. “When it comes down to it, it doesn’t matter what person is in that position. It is about values and where the Democrat party is leading Democrats in this country too. Which is to a left agenda, to socialism, and we do not want that in this district,” de la Cruz stated.
Boyle mentioned the Biden administration’s scrapping all of the Trump administration’s immigration policies and creating this crisis at the border. Boyle pointed out how inhumanely the migrants are treated at the border and asked de la Cruz, a Hispanic woman, how seeing what they are doing at the border makes her feel about the policy.
“What [the Biden administration] have done by stopping the remain in Mexico policy and starting the catch and release program up again,” she said, describing what catch and release is doing at the border. “The Border Patrol catches someone, and the immigrants are not running, their walking straight up to Border Patrol and saying ‘I’m here seeking asylum,’ they catch them and release them out to the bus station, to an airport, and they fly them out to their American destination.”
She says this is not just an issue for her congressional district, but rather an American issue, claiming the Biden administration and Gonzalez have created a humanitarian issue on the border. “Reigniting this catch and release program, what they have done has sent a message to people CentralandSouthAmerica that says coming over here, we’regoingtoreleaseyouintotheUnitedStates.”
Last week, she was on the river observing how people were coming over to the United States. She witnessed “rafts and rafts of little kids, five-year-olds, seven-year-olds, these are unaccompanied minors,” which she said have been traveling anywhere between one to four months to get into the U.S.
She described the kids being abandoned on Texas ranchers’ property because some families cannot afford the remaining balance they owe to the smugglers to bring full families over.
De la Cruz called out Gonzalez in 2019. Her district had half a million immigrants come through her county. Gonzalez still has yet to meet with any border patrol during the last surge or the current one.
De la Cruz wants to know why the congressman has not met with border patrol and why he hasn’t been vocal about what is happening at the border. She said Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) has had to get involved in their district in the past because Gonzalez has not stood up for the constituents.
Cuellar recently told Border Report that more than 2,000 migrants were released into South Texas without court papers. The releases came as Border Patrol agents became overwhelmed by the massively growing numbers of migrant families and children crossing the border.

Voters overwhelmingly oppose the Democrats continuing to keep schools closed, a new poll shows.
The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) released a survey taken from February 24-28, showing voters overwhelmingly believe schools should be reopened. The survey was among 1,000 voters across 85 battleground congressional districts. Of the registered voters, 62 percent and 60 percent of Independents are less likely to vote Democrat.
The survey showed, 66 percent of voters say it is safe to open schools up and send students back to in-person learning. Democrats refusing to reopen the schools were found to be toxic. Voters are upset at Democrats who have been ignoring science in saying schools are not safe to reopen, and voters promise they will be held accountable in the midterm election.
“National teacher unions who bankrolled Democrat campaigns stand in the way of safely re-opening schools and providing our students with the educational and emotional support they need,” the survey showed.
In January, a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report found, “There has been little evidence that schools have contributed meaningfully to increased community transmission.”
During a White House coronavirus briefing in February, the CDC Director, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, spoke about reopening schools. “There is increasing data to suggest that schools can safely reopen and that safe reopening does not suggest that teachers need to be vaccinated,” she said.
As previously reported, after months of distance learning, New York City high schools are set to reopen on March 22.
Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN), the chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), told Breitbart News exclusively that he believes the Republicans will retake the House majority in November 2022 and retire Democrat Speaker Nancy Pelosi once and for all.
The NRCC last week released a list of 47 Democrat-held target districts that Republicans are focused on. Currently, the House Democrats have 222 seats, while the GOP minority is comprised of 213 seats. That means to retake the House, Republicans need to only flip a net five seats back into GOP hands. Emmer, in an appearance on Breitbart News Saturday on SiriusXM 125 the Patriot Channel, further explained those 47 targets that make the Republicans’ path back to a majority clear and easy to accomplish.
“Out of the 47, the top 29 we list as ‘Battleground Democrats,’” Emmer said. “These folks make up the majority of our offensive targets because the list includes members—Democrats—where Joe Biden lost their district in 2020 and several who underperformed the top of the ticket in 2020. We also have added four new members who hadn’t been on the list before. So you have the first group where Biden either lost their district or they underperformed the top of the ticket and their district might have been within five points. Then you’ve got Democrats who won by less than 10 percent and underperformed the presidential ballot—they’re just weak candidates, that’s the bottom line. Then we’ve got 10 we put in there that we’re watching because of redistricting and in states that will either gain a seat or lose a seat in the coming redistricting and, quite frankly depending on that these seats, could suddenly be in play.”
Republicans in the 2020 congressional elections significantly outperformed expectations. Everyone from the Cook Political Report to Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball predicted that Democrats would gain seats in November. Fox News, on election night, even falsely projected that the Democrats would pick five to 10 seats. They were all wrong, as Republicans ended up gaining a net 15 seats in the 2020 congressional elections, now that all is said and done. No GOP incumbent lost, either.
Emmer, in his interview on Breitbart News Saturday, explained that Breitbart News was the only media outlet in America to see this coming. Emmer previously appeared on Breitbart News Saturday in the lead-up to the election, breaking it down, and House GOP Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) did a number of exclusive interviews on the matter with Breitbart News, including an hourlong special in the summer of 2019 setting the table for the House GOP gains in November 2020.
“Nobody but Breitbart, Matt Boyle, and I’m going to add Tom Emmer [saw GOP House gains coming]—I said this from day one—you and I did a show several months back where I told you where our targets were,” Emmer said. “We targeted 55 seats, the top 30 Donald Trump had won four years earlier. The top 13 he had won by double digits. We believed in what we were doing. We recruited probably the greatest class of candidates, I’ve been told by people who have been in Washington for years, and certainly more diverse, with more women candidates than ever, more minorities than ever, and more veterans than ever. Then, we had the right message. We made sure people understood the difference between Republicans—who offer policies that are all about individual freedom, individual liberty, the right to self-determine—versus the new self-proclaimed socialists who have taken over my grandfather’s Democrat Party and who want to remake our country in the vision of Venezuela. That’s not a choice, that’s a major problem. We felt from day one that we were in a position on a good night to pick up eight to 12 seats, and on a great night to take back the majority. But you’re—aside from you and Breitbart, there were very few people out there. It got louder and louder, I would say, from June through November and the election, where they just kept saying that we were going to lose. In fact, Nancy Pelosi probably predicted on election day that she was picking up 15 seats. A different prognosticator in the Washington area the day before the election said we were going to lose as many as 24 seats. Well, as it turns out, we didn’t do as little as I had projected. We actually picked up 15. It’s good to be wrong. We picked up 15, and while I’m disappointed we didn’t get all the way back to the 218 number, we’re at 213 members and we have a record number of women—over 30 women and we’re going to build off of that—and we had some great candidates from minority communities including Young Kim from Orange County, California, a Korean American, as well as Michelle Steel. Burgess Owens from Utah’s fourth district and Byron Donalds from Florida. The list goes on and on. These are great people. So at the end of the day, I’m proud to tell you we held not only every incumbent, which has not happened since 1994, but we flipped 15 seats, and every one of them is with a female candidate, a minority candidate, and or a veteran. And now we have [on the Democrat side] the smallest majority, the most narrow majority, 222-213, since the 1890s, which hopefully will help us over the next two years slow down this incredible lurch to the left that our colleagues in the other party would like to see.”
Emmer said that is the goal of Republicans: to, after the upcoming 2022 midterm elections, retire Pelosi and make McCarthy the Speaker of the House.
“Our goal is Kevin McCarthy will be the Speaker and Nancy Pelosi will be retired,” Emmer said. “I don’t know if you remember, but when the election was over she wasn’t willing to say this would be her last two years. We’re going to make sure this is her last two years as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives. I think our kids and our grandkids are counting on it. So, how are we going to do that? It’s the same template, it’s the same plan we put together in the last Congress. We’ve identified the 47 seats, 29 that are within the margin of error for us to win back, and then the remaining weak candidates and candidates that could suddenly come into play because of redistricting. But it’s going to take exactly what we did last time. We’ve got to recruit excellent candidates, we’ve got to have the right message, and then we have got to raise the right resources. We’re not going to have—the Democrats burn money on a daily basis, and frankly they don’t do it very efficiently. If we raise enough resources–and you saw what we did in the last election, we are razor sharp with where we need to put those resources. I’ve got to give our NRCC team credit. I’ve got to give our leader, Kevin McCarthy, credit. I’ve got to give our colleagues over at the Congressional Leadership Fund credit, because this group, contrary to all the naysayers out there and all the so-called experts, surgically went in and worked the races we needed to put us in a position to take back the majority. We came up just five seats short and the goal is now to finish what we started. Our job here over the first year here, 2021, will be to redefine the opposition. As we come in to the next year, the election year, 2022, we will continue to define these members so people understand they continue to support this socialist agenda, this radical agenda. At the same time, Kevin McCarthy, our leader, will roll out his positive agenda—a value proposition for the American voter so they can see the Republican Party is the party with solutions for Main Street, and I think that will be a winning combination going into November 2022.”
Democrat President Joe Biden’s leftist agenda at the outset of his administration, Emmer said, is making it easier for Republicans to zone in on the majority. Democrats in Congress are wasting the first month of the Biden Administration on a second failed effort to impeach now former President Donald Trump—while pushing a plan heralded as relief for the coronavirus pandemic that he says is nothing of the sort—helps show Americans that the Democrats are not honest brokers when it comes to wielding power.
“First off, this so-called COVID relief bill is not a COVID relief bill—$1.9 trillion, it’s basically a socialist agenda wishlist,” Emmer said. “People out there need to understand there is still $1.4 trillion that has yet to be put to work that has passed from the CARES Act and the COVID relief bill where some $900 billion was added to the CARES Act at the end of December. So this idea that this is bringing relief to Americans is ludicrous. This is their wishlist. That’s not to say though that Republicans would not be interested in supporting some targeted relief to specific industries that have been missed. That discussion would be gladly had. But they’re not doing that, like you say. This impeachment hoax again on the other side, I’m going to tell you if they wanted to move President Trump out of office, all they’re doing is putting him on the front page every day and allowing his counsel to once again show the hypocrisy of the left. Videotapes that they rolled out [on Friday] literally showing their own words and using them against them infuriated them, but again America needs to be able to see this.”
Emmer said that in 2018 when the Democrats took back the majority for the first time in eight years they “committed a fraud” on the American people by promising to solve problems on issues that matter to ordinary Americans, then governing as partisan hacks. But then Republicans won back many of these districts in 2020 by exposing the Democrats’ radical agenda.
“Let’s talk about 2018. Democrats who got elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2018 did so by selling themselves as problem-solving moderates who were going to come to Washington, DC, and work on the issues that were most important to Americans, and you named it, it’s our healthcare, it’s roads and bridges, it’s all kinds of issues that are important to people out there on a daily basis,” Emmer said. “What did they do? They committed a fraud. Why? Because they came to Washington, DC, and became the most partisan House majority that I think we’ve ever seen in the history of this country, not just our lifetime. Now, in 2020, we ran and won in districts all over this country by highlighting Joe Biden and the House Democrats’ job-killing anti-energy agenda. We won in places like Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma because we warned people of the Democrats’ anti-energy job-killing agenda. Look at what happened on Joe Biden’s first day in office. With the stroke of his pen, he killed as you mentioned the Keystone XL pipeline and the 11,000 great-paying American jobs that support it. He also eliminated even more jobs and threatened America’s energy independence by banning all new fracking on federal lands. To put it in perspective, you started to go there but here are the numbers, those two actions on their own are projected to eliminate upwards of one million energy jobs and cost nearly one billion—that’s with a B—in tax revenue that’s used primarily to fund schools and first responders. These actions I would suggest show just how damaging the Democrats’ socialist agenda is and the real-life impact it has on people’s lives. And it is why we are going to finish what we started two years from now by taking back the House majority and making Kevin McCarthy the Speaker.”
What’s more, Emmer said he believes 2022 will be a referendum on policies in both directions—on Republicans, particularly the Trump administration’s policies, and on Democrats through the Biden administration’s policies.
“I think the Trump policies are going to be on the ballot in 2022, compared and contrasted with the Biden policies,” Emmer said. “People got to remember, the Trump administration implemented some amazing policies—not just the tax cuts for the middle class and the energy policies, that all-of-the-above energy policy that we talk about, but immigration policies and securing of our border policies, putting Americans and America first policy. We need to celebrate that over the next two years. We need to remind voters that is what the Trump administration was doing because they were incredibly popular. Now, the Democrats and Joe Biden have said they are going to unwind all of this. In fact, I think it was the president who said just within the last few days that they have effectively abolished ICE without abolishing ICE. Think about that for a second—at a time when safety and security in our communities and safety and security in our states is still, if not the top issue, one of the top issues that Americans are concerned with. You better believe this is going to be on the ballot when we get to November 2022. It’s going to make a huge difference and this is why Republicans are going to take back the House, take back a majority in the Senate, and guess what? Kevin McCarthy will be the Speaker.”
LISTEN TO NRCC CHAIRMAN REP. TOM EMMER ON BREITBART NEWS SATURDAY:
The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) on Sunday night raised concerns that CNN anchor Jake Tapper may be “meddling” in House races beyond the 17th congressional district in Pennsylvania.
Responding to a report from Breitbart News on how Jake Tapper attempted to convince rising GOP star candidate Sean Parnell to run in a district other than the 17th, the NRCC raised questions about Tapper’s actions in this case and wondered if he has engaged in activity like this in other districts with other candidates as well.
The NRCC’s tweet, which includes a link to the Breitbart News story on the matter, accuses CNN and Tapper of “meddling in House swing races.”
The original Breitbart News report quoted sources familiar with Tapper’s actions, in which he — through text messages, direct messages on Twitter to Parnell’s account, and phone calls — tried to steer Parnell towards running in less of a swing district and more a Republican-leaning district. The original cites a number of sources familiar with the matter. Since the publication of the original article, Breitbart News has additionally confirmed Tapper’s activities with at least eight more individuals aware of his behavior in Pennsylvania politics.
The reason why what Tapper did is significant: If Parnell ran somewhere other than the 17th district, it is unlikely that Democrat Rep. Conor Lamb (D-PA) would face a serious challenge in November’s congressional election. But since Parnell rebuked Tapper’s political advice, and instead chose to run against Lamb, the vulnerable Democrat is facing potential defeat in November.
What’s more, this district is one of 30 such House districts that President Donald Trump won in 2016 that are currently represented by Democrats. If the GOP flips just a net 17 seats from Democrat control back into Republican hands, they win back the majority and retire House Speaker Nancy Pelosi once and for all. In addition to these 30 Trump-won Democrat-controlled districts, Republicans say they are confident in another dozen or so seats where they have better chances than the conditions in southern California where now-Rep. Mike Garcia (R-CA) won a special election this year to replace the disgraced former Rep. Katie Hill (D-CA), who resigned amid a sex scandal with staffers in her office.
This district could also make the difference between whether Trump or Democrat presidential nominee former Vice President Joe Biden wins the all-important state of Pennsylvania and its 20 electoral votes. Now that it has a competitive congressional race, it could help drive support to Trump by turning out the GOP vote in the hard-fought down-ticket race.
Tapper has not responded to a Breitbart News request for comment on this matter, nor has CNN official Matt Dornic — the person who handles corporate communications for the network. But Tapper has, according to former acting Director of National Intelligence Ric Grenell, denied the substance of the story.
Parnell’s campaign also declined to comment on the original story. But many others on the right, top conservatives and supporters of President Trump, raised concerns about Tapper’s conduct on this matter before and after Tapper’s denial through Grenell.

Jake Tapper personally intervened in a tight congressional race and told @SeanParnellUSA not to challenge a vulnerable Democrat. Instead, Tapper urged Parnell to primary a Republican in a safe GOP district and leave Tapper’s Democrat friend alone. https://t.co/2IDSVlB0AG
The Federalist’s Sean Davis also confirmed Breitbart News’s original report late Sunday night, suggesting more will come out about this on Monday:
I can confirm, notwithstanding his denial, that Jake Tapper directly urged Parnell not to run against Rep. Conor Lamb, a vulnerable left-wing Democrat in a swing congressional district in Pennsylvania. https://t.co/CiJebG5B7t
What’s more, several sources familiar with Tapper’s activities on Sunday after the story broke confirm that Tapper spent much of the evening calling and texting people frantically trying to rally anyone he could to his side — and asking anyone he could for advice on what to do.
“For someone who likes telling people that he doesn’t take Breitbart seriously, it was enjoyable to see him spend his entire evening taking Breitbart pretty seriously,” a Trump ally who speaks with Tapper on a regular basis told Breitbart News.
AIR FORCE TWO — Vice President Mike Pence told Breitbart News in an exclusive interview on Friday that he believes Donald Trump’s supporters are more enthusiastic now than they were during the 2016 presidential election and that Trump is the “last line of defense” against the “radical left.”
Vice President Pence spoke to Breitbart News as the vice president traveled to Duluth, Minnesota, and Traverse City, Michigan, to rally support for President Trump’s reelection and several down-ticket races, such as conservative John James’s bid to unseat Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI).
Pence noted during his speech in Michigan that a Trafalgar Poll released on Friday found Trump and James lead their opponents in Michigan. Another Trafalgar poll found that Trump is closing the gap in Minnesota.
Pence told Breitbart News he believes support for Trump has only continued to grow from four years ago.
Pence traveled in Minnesota with Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN), the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) chairman, while he was in Minnesota for his campaign.
The vice president emphasized that not only do they want to give Trump a second term in office; they also want to keep the Senate Republican majority and make House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) the next speaker of the House.
“When I think of what we can do for this country over the next four years — I talked with him today, Tom Emmer, the NRCC; he was with us for a while — our first priority with this president is to get him reelected, but we’re going to be working to make sure that Kevin McCarthy is speaker of the House and we have a Republican Senate,” Pence said.
During his speech in Minnesota, Pence also praised Rep. Pete Stauber, as well as former Rep. Jason Lewis (R-MN). Lewis hopes to unseat Sen. Tina Smith (D-MN) in November.
“The road to victory begins in Duluth, Minnesota, and … we’re going to win the state,” the vice president said during his speech in Duluth.
McCarthy has noted that Republicans only need to retake 17 congressional seats to regain the House majority. Republicans have targeted the 31 congressional seats across the country that Trump won in the 2016 presidential election but House Democrats managed to flip during the 2018 midterm elections.
Pence reiterated that he remains more confident than ever that they will win the 2020 presidential election; however, he cautioned that Democrat-controlled Congress could lead to the “radical left” pushing progressive policies that could undermine American freedom. He warned that a Democrat Congress could unleash the “radical left,” pushing for policies that could harm America’s economic recovery.
He explained, “I believe we will win, and I always believed that we will win in 2016. I’m more convinced of it now than I was in 2016. People need to understand that the stakes of this election, is if Nancy Pelosi is speaker of the House, and we don’t hold the Senate, Barack Obama said … that we should do away with the filibuster.” However, Pence cautioned that Trump will always fight the radical left and their push to transform the country towards their progressive vision.
“I was told today that Chuck Schumer is open to it [ending the filibuster],” Pence said. “So the last line of defense is President Donald Trump and the veto because you look at the radical left agenda of Nancy Pelosi and the House, and the bills they passed the last year, when you think of a Senate without a filibuster, with a Democrat majority, President Donald Trump and his veto are the last line of defense for stopping the agenda of the radical left that’s being foisted upon the country.”
