D.C. Public Schools to Force Coronavirus Tests After Thanksgiving

Washington, DC, public schools will require that all students and staff test negative for the coronavirus before they are allowed to come back from Thanksgiving break.

“To support a safe return from Thanksgiving break, all students and staff are expected to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test,” the district website reads. “Families should test their students and upload test results…on Sunday, November 27.”

The district included a link with the testing information and a portal to upload results to prove testing negative.

Tests must be taken within 24 hours of the Monday, November 28, return to school.

The requirement to test comes as many on the left are calling for masking and social distancing again in spite of the evidence against the efficacy of those practices.

Let’s Talk About Mayor Muriel Bowser’s Looming Gas Pains

Let’s Talk About Mayor Muriel Bowser’s Looming Gas Pains

Like other leftist politicians and activists, Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser rarely ponders even easily foreseeable consequences of her actions and demands solutions implemented and paid for by someone else.

The District of Columbia is about to inflict an enormous new set of roosting chicken realities on its residents — and even more so on its neighbors: Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Led by Councilwoman Mary Cheh, D.C.’s City Council recently passed two laws banning fossil fuels for heating, cooking, and city-owned vehicles. Together, they put this crime-ridden city at the forefront of stopping manmade climate change, “the single most important environmental issue of our time,” Cheh said. Bowser enthusiastically endorsed the efforts.

The “Clean Energy D.C. Building Code Amendment Act” prohibits fossil fuels for household and water heating in new commercial buildings (including residential buildings four stories and higher), starting in 2027. Among other requirements, it mandates that restaurants and families use electric cooking systems instead of natural gas, though buildings deemed “essential to protecting public health and safety” may use gas for backup electricity generation.

The “Climate Commitment Act” forbids fossil fuel heat for new district-owned buildings, including schools, by 2025 and requires that all D.C. vehicles be zero emissions by 2026, all District operations be carbon-free by 2040, and the entire city be “carbon-neutral” by 2045.

Every fossil fuel reduction will require expanded electricity use — and generation. With nuclear likely off the table, power generation will presumably be via “renewable energy,” mostly wind and solar. But these technologies are intermittent, unreliable, and weather-dependent. They must be backed up by batteries that must be recharged constantly, by more wind and solar power.

Ignoring Reality

Ignore for the moment that none of this energy is renewable or sustainable. Wind and sunshine are, but raw materials needed to harness this energy to power modern civilization are not.

In fact, a nationwide Green New Deal would require millions of tons of metals and minerals, billions of tons of ores, and hundreds of new mines in the United States, China, Africa, and other countries.

Ignore that D.C.’s “historic” laws might reduce average global temperatures by 0.0002 degrees Fahrenheit by 2100, assuming fossil fuel emissions actually drive climate change. With China, India, and a hundred other countries burning more fossil fuels to improve living standards and supply U.S. “green energy” needs, global greenhouse gas emissions will continue to rise.

Where exactly does D.C. intend to locate the hundreds of wind turbines and millions of solar panels this “transition” will require? On city rooftops? In Rock Creek Park and the Potomac River?

Where will it put a half-million half-ton battery modules for a week of backup power? They pose serious fire hazards and thus must be located far from residences, offices, garages, and parking lots. Even electric cars and buses, for safety reasons, ought to be parked away from buildings and with distance between them.

Surrounding Areas to Pay the Price Too

City leaders probably assume they can install all these facilities in neighboring states: on West Virginia mountaintops; in Maryland and Virginia agricultural, scenic, and wildlife habitat areas; and in the Chesapeake Bay — with high-voltage transmission lines connecting the facilities to the District.

After all, District residents should not be expected to pick up the tab for trying to save the planet from climate cataclysms. They shouldn’t have to endure the environmental consequences, either.

What “say” will residents of these states have in these decisions — especially those who will be expected to live next to vast wind and solar “farms,” and suffer the infrasound, light flicker, and other tranquility-disrupting and health-impairing effects of this so-called clean energy?

Can Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland citizens reject the facilities, just as others have rejected fracking, pipelines, and mining?

What about the raw materials that are currently sourced primarily through China — with rampant pollution, child and slave labor, and fossil fuels? Will D.C. require “responsible sourcing” for the massive amounts of metals and minerals needed to honor its “climate commitment”?

One has to wonder whether the real objective is sustainability, sustained moralizing, or totalitarian control over people’s lives, livelihoods, and living standards.

The good news for Bowser and the D.C. Council is that their reckless energy agenda has received little pushback from the public. That may all change, of course, should the power go out during a Nats or Wizards game.

Biden’s Pentagon Refuses D.C. Mayor Bowser’s Request for National Guard to Deal with Illegal Immigration

Biden’s Pentagon Refuses D.C. Mayor Bowser’s Request for National Guard to Deal with Illegal Immigration

President Joe Biden’s Pentagon has refused a request from Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) to activate the National Guard to help the city deal with illegal immigration.

Last week, Bowser requested the Biden administration activate the D.C. National Guard as she said the city is at a “tipping point” with a surge of illegal immigration triggered by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s busing border crossers and illegal aliens to Democrat-run sanctuary cities.

HAPPENING NOW: Third Bus of Migrants Arriving in DC from Texas…

Posted by Breitbart on Friday, April 15, 2022

According to Bowser, Abbott has sent more than 4,000 border crossers and illegal aliens to D.C. since April. On Friday, a Defense Department official confirmed to CNN that the federal agency had denied Bowser’s request to activate the D.C. National Guard.

CNN reports:

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin rejected the request because the Department of Defense has “determined providing this support would negatively impact the readiness of the DCNG and have negative effects on the organization and members,” the official said. [Emphasis added]

Abbott has invited Bowser, along with New York City Mayor Eric Adams, to visit the U.S.-Mexico border to witness firsthand the record level of illegal immigration that Texas must deal with as a result of Biden’s expansive Catch and Release operation that continues enticing thousands of border crossers and illegal aliens every day to the United States.

Most recently, Abbott said he was looking at expanding on the Democrat-run sanctuary cities that Texas will send border crossers and illegal aliens to not only include Washington, D.C. and New York City.

“We are helping out these small local communities by sending even more buses to these communities and putting these new migrants on the buses and sending them to Washington, D.C.,” Abbott said. “And we’re looking at other cities to send them to.”

Exclusive Footage: Migrant Bus of Mostly Single Adult Men, Sent by Texas Gov. Abbott, Arrives in New York City

NEW YORK CITY — A bus filled with mostly single adult male migrants arrived at Port Authority in New York City from Texas Friday morning — where they were greeted by volunteers handing out burritos — as Gov. Greg Abbott (R) continues dispersing record-breaking numbers of border crossers and illegal aliens arriving in his state to Democrat-run “sanctuary cities.”

New York City officials appeared to be unprepared for the migrants’ arrival, or at least lacked communication and coordination to receive them, as Port Authority did not initially have a gate for the bus to park, and Port Authority employees were not aware of the plan for arrival. The bus circled between 8th and 9th avenues Friday morning until it was finally able to park at Gate 14 at approximately 7:30 a.m.

“Because of President Biden’s continued refusal to acknowledge the crisis caused by his open border policies, the State of Texas has had to take unprecedented action to keep our communities safe,” Gov. Abbott said in a statement.

“In addition to Washington, D.C., New York City is the ideal destination for these migrants, who can receive the abundance of city services and housing that Mayor Eric Adams has boasted about within the sanctuary city,” Abbott said. “I hope he follows through on his promise of welcoming all migrants with open arms so that our overrun and overwhelmed border towns can find relief.”

When the bus arrived, Breitbart News witnessed passengers disembarking after a 3-day journey from Texas, greeted by a handful of volunteers. One volunteer was wearing a “NYC immigration services” t-shirt, but there did not appear to be any city employees present.

The greeters handed migrants a bag bearing the logo of the humanitarian aid organization “Save the Children”; however, there appeared to be fewer than 10 children among the group, and no more than 5 women. The rest of the 60-some passengers on the bus were single males between the ages of 20 to 40 years old.

The volunteers led the group through Port Authority, corralled them into the entrance of the bus station and handed out burritos. Some migrants were provided rides to other locations, but it was unclear where.

One migrant, a man who said his name is Alfonzo and who arrived alone, told Breitbart News he traveled from Venezuela through Mexico into Texas, where he was put directly on the bus to New York City.

He left his wife and children in Chile and explained that he came alone to America first and planned to bring them later. He does not have any family or connections in the United States and does not speak English. He came with one bag containing some toiletries and a pillow, and had 130 U.S. dollars.

Alfonzo told Breitbart News that now was a good “opportunity” to come to the United States, explaining that he did not believe he would be admitted under former President Trump’s administration, specifically mentioning that the wall along the southern border was an obstacle to entry. He said locals in Mexico accepted money to direct him toward the border.

Alfonzo said he was looking for work, but had never been to New York City or the United States. He did not have a place to stay and was not informed of any lodging services or resources.

Despite Democrat officials’ support for illegal immigration through their expansive sanctuary city policies, which shield illegal aliens from arrest and deportation from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a handful have warned that the migrant buses from Texas will overwhelm their city’s public resources.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D), for instance, has pleaded with Biden for “additional federal resources immediately” to deal with the illegal immigration surge. In another statement, Adams told New Yorkers to get “on board” with having their city overrun with border crossers and illegal aliens arriving and straining infrastructure, hospitals, schools, and neighborhoods.

“Everyone’s block is going to be impacted by this,” Adams said. “And so we have to add our advocacy with our ability to help our neighbors. We need everyone on board with this.”

“… our schools are going to be impacted, our healthcare system is going to be impacted, our infrastructure is going to be impacted,” he continued.

Adams’ office claims the migrant buses’ being sent to New York City is akin to using border crossers and illegal aliens “as political pawns,” calling the policy “disgusting.”

Gov. Abbott has issued a public invitation to Mayor Adams to visit the southern border, insisting the “sanctuary city” mayor witness “the magnitude of chaos created by Biden’s open-border policies.”

“I really wish they would [visit] because public officials across the country, they do need to realize the magnitude of the chaos created by Biden’s open-border policies,” Abbott said on Fox News Thursday.

“They’re up in arms about a few thousand people coming into their communities over the past few months? Listen, in any one sector in the state of Texas, we have more than 5,000 people coming across in that sector every single day,” Abbott continued.

Similarly, Washington, DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser requested National Guard troops last month to deal with what she called a “humanitarian crisis” of just over 6,000 migrants being bused to the capital from Texas since April.

Mayor Bowser / Facebook

Bowser, a staunch supporter of the region’s sanctuary city policy, claimed the migrant buses were a “tipping point” for Washington, DC, even as they pale in comparison to the level of illegal immigration that American border towns are forced to deal with under the Biden administration.

In Texas border towns alone, nearly 130,000 border crossers and illegal aliens were caught crossing the border in June. Most recently, in the small town of Normandy, Texas — with a population of just 29 residents — about 400 border crossers and illegal aliens crossed into the area this month.

Democrat Mayor Muriel Bowser Activates National Guard: Illegal Immigration at ‘Tipping Point’ in D.C.

Democrat Mayor Muriel Bowser Activates National Guard: Illegal Immigration at ‘Tipping Point’ in D.C.

Washington, DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser (D), a proponent of sanctuary city policy, has activated the National Guard as she says the region is at an illegal immigration “tipping point” with about 4,000 border crossers and illegal aliens arriving in recent weeks.

On Thursday, Bowser announced that she had activated the D.C. National Guard to “help lead that effort” in dealing with waves of illegal immigration to the region where border crossers and illegal aliens are taking full advantage of President Joe Biden’s expansive Catch and Release operation.

“We are very focused and we continue to be very focused on having the federal government do its part and take the lead in addressing what we see as a growing humanitarian crisis. … We’re going to continue to pursue federal involvement,” Bowser said.

“We need space and we need the federal government to be involved so I’ve asked for the deployment of the Guard as long as we need the Guard to deal with the humanitarian crisis that we expect to escalate,” Bowser continued.

The reported 4,000 border crossers and illegal aliens who have arrived in D.C. in recent weeks is a fraction of the total that American border communities face every day.

In Texas border towns, alone, nearly 130,000 border crossers and illegal aliens were caught crossing the border in June. Most recently, in the small town of Normandy, Texas — with a population of just 29 residents — about 400 border crossers and illegal aliens crossed into the area this month.

Randy Clark / Breitbart News

The pro-sanctuary mayor said “the number of people crossing the border … we expect to only go up” and thus the Biden administration should implement “a national response.”

The Biden administration’s response, though, has been to hugely expand its Catch and Release capabilities, ensuring that at least 7,100 border crossers and illegal aliens arrive at the United States-Mexico border every day — a crippling figure for American border communities.

Part of that Catch and Release operation is paroling thousands of border crossers and illegal aliens into the U.S. every day. The process has ensured that from February 2021 to May 2022, more than a million border crossers and illegal aliens have been released into American communities.

As Washington, DC, witnesses, mass immigration has real pocketbook costs for Americans. In D.C., waves of illegal immigration will likely spike housing costs even higher for residents. Already, 800-square-foot apartments in D.C. are going for nearly $3,000 a month.

Research conducted at the University of Pennsylvania found that “an immigration inflow equal to 1 percent of a city’s population is associated with increases in average rents and housing values of about 1 percent.”

In New York City, New York, Mayor Eric Adams (D) — also a proponent of sanctuary city policy — has said that residents must get “on board” with illegal immigration straining their public schools, hospitals, infrastructure, housing costs, and neighborhoods.

“Our schools are going to be impacted, our healthcare system is going to be impacted, our infrastructure is going to be impacted. … We’re going to need all New Yorkers to be with us on this,” Adams said.

Faced With The Horrific Results Of Their Ideas, Leftists Are Backpedaling With All Their Might

Faced With The Horrific Results Of Their Ideas, Leftists Are Backpedaling With All Their Might

It would appear that leftists don’t actually like a lot of the radical policies they have been advocating for since the beginning of the lockdowns and the death of George Floyd in spring 2020. From homelessness to crime to Covid policies, the left is backtracking on much of its platform in the face of disastrous results and frustration from rank-and-file liberals. Recent developments in our nation’s capital provide some of the most dramatic examples.

Cities across the country are taking a more aggressive stance on homeless encampments in response to residents’ complaints, including Washington, D.C. An early February poll conducted by The Washington Post found that three-fourths of Washingtonians support the district’s plan to clear the camps of homeless persons that now proliferate across the city.

That the American Civil Liberties Union and even some D.C. council members oppose Mayor Muriel E. Bowser’s cleanups have not stopped their enforcement. Bowser has quite a mandate for this: the number of city residents who want these camps cleared does not substantially change based on respondents’ race, and is above 70 percent for white, black, Hispanic, and Asian residents.

That the district is pursuing this policy with substantial local support is a bit ironic, given that so many prominent leftist organizations, local leftist leaders, and Democratic politicians have been trying for more than a year to protect these encampments. This included Ann Marie Staudenmaier, wife of Maryland gubernatorial candidate Tom Perez, who last year advocated for homeless camps in the district to be permitted and protected. “Don’t evict them from the only place that they have to call home,” she urged.

Perhaps it has something to do with how large numbers of homeless persons affect the cleanliness, security, and attraction of neighborhoods. A separate recent WaPo article cited residents who noted homeless persons in the camp have harassed them. One D.C. resident said downtown is “not pleasant” and that the ubiquity of the encampments threatens the security of local residents.

Although many on the left would likely grimace to say it, national trends on curbing these camps indicate a significant percentage of the rest of America feels the same way.

Refunding the Police

Mayors of America’s largest cities, once responsive to calls to defund the police, have done a dramatic reversal in response to local frustration with higher crime rates. Now “refund the police” has become the cry of many liberal residents.

In D.C., residents’ opinions on crime and police have experienced this shift, given increased crime and murder rates in the city since 2020. According to a recent WaPo poll, a sizable majority (59 percent) now agree that increasing the number of police officers patrolling communities would reduce the amount of violent crime in D.C.

“The share of Washingtonians who say they are not safe from crime has risen to 30 percent this year from 22 percent in November 2019 and is the highest in more than two decades of Post polls,” reports the WaPo.

This is quite a change from the “defund the police” initiatives city residents — and various activist groups — so loudly endorsed after the death of George Floyd. The D.C. government in 2020 supported measures in June 2022 to cut $15 million from the police department budget. At the time, the police chief warned this could lead to the loss of hundreds of officers and that underfunding training and equipment might result in officers using more excessive force.

Thankfully, D.C. is not alone in wanting to refund the police. As NBC reported in February, Democratic politicians are calling the “defund the police” movement “dead” and mayors in San Francisco, New York, and Chicago are “moving to increase police budgets and end ‘the reign of criminals.’”

Surrendering to Pandemic Fatigue

Democratic states are also ending many Covid restrictions in the face of rising complaints from their constituents. Consider D.C. Mayor Bowser’s mid-February announcement that she would lift the city’s vaccine requirement for businesses and “dial back” the city’s indoor mask rules. This announcement followed a number of states — including many governed by Democrats — that have also eased their restrictions as polls come back showing their rising unpopularity. Now D.C.’s party scene is “returning to normal,” reports the WaPo, even though coronavirus case counts in and around Washington remain “high.”

This is a remarkable and speedy shift, especially considering D.C. had some of the most strict Covid restrictions in the country. Perhaps the District’s dramatic about-face has something to do with widespread annoyance with pandemic restrictions, even among liberal voters. Perhaps it results from the rising tide of Democratic politicians listening to their constituencies despite “public health guidance” claiming the country is moving too fast in loosening the rules.

Perhaps all of these changes also relate to the fact that the District of Columbia is no longer experiencing the population boom and gentrification that have defined the last couple of decades. The capital’s population declined by 2.9 percent from 2020 to 2021, according to the Census Bureau. Living in an increasingly dangerous, filthy nanny-city is apparently not that appealing, even to the District’s majority leftist population. This has been part of a broader national trend as people across the nation in 2021 left Democratic-run states.

Mugged by Reality

To borrow a phrase from the late Irving Kristol, D.C. residents (and liberals across the country) have been mugged by reality — and in some cases actually mugged. Perhaps living in a lefty utopia where the homeless camp wherever they like, undisturbed by a defunded police force, with fickle and irrational health-related restrictions isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be.

Democrat D.C. residents, like the rest of Americans, don’t actually like their public spaces overrun by homeless persons, their neighborhoods suffering increased violent crime rates, or their cities stuck in a cycle of never-ending draconian public safety regulations.

What this all means is that, thankfully, certain activist narratives that threatened all Americans have lost considerable steam. It also means these policies are likely political liabilities in upcoming elections. Perhaps it also shows there are certain things that all Americans can still agree on.

DC’s Mandates Repeal Shows Who’s In Charge Of Covid Rules — And Who Isn’t

DC’s Mandates Repeal Shows Who’s In Charge Of Covid Rules — And Who Isn’t

WASHINGTON, D.C. — D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser’s Monday morning turnaround on the city’s Covid lockdown policies was sudden and unexpected.

In its haste — and in who it spared, and who it did not — the decree also served to expose the money-mired confluence of politics, power, and American Covid policy.

The announcement followed public complaints from private business owners facing a third year of ruin and despair, sparing them. It came on the eve of the policies’ hardest impact on key D.C. constituents, sparing them as well.

Most tellingly, however, it failed to spare the city’s schoolchildren. For them, there is no lobby; and so for them, there is no respite.

All Business Is Equal, But Some Is More Equal Than Others

The mayor’s decision to end vaccination requirements and sunset certain mask demands came one week after influential D.C. restauranteur Dan Simons publicly complained on Twitter that the federal city had become an unwelcoming place, where politics overruled a tolerance for those Americans who disagreed on vaccine mandates. The climate, he said, was keeping school children from learning important history here — and driving business to Maryland and Virginia.

Restaurant business in the District is down an estimated 59 percent since January 2019, and men like Simons felt compelled to take a stand for their city. In standing up (if even for a moment), he’d joined Noe Landini, managing director and CEO of REX Management, which also owns restaurants and bars across DC, Maryland, and Virginia.

Landini — an outspoken critic of arbitrary Covid restrictions from the very beginning — had publicly promised not to discriminate against D.C. customers based on their vaccination status, but was forced to comply by the city’s promise of harsh penalties for resistance.

His decision to back down spared his businesses the wrath of the city government. Simons, whose partnership owns four restaurants in D.C., two in Virginia, and one each in Maryland and Pennsylvania, was similarly spared.

After an unhinged — and barely factual — backlash from delirious Twitter users, Simons deleted his tweets. But while he and Landini were given some measure of mercy, one D.C. restaurant was in the process of losing its business.

That business was burger-and-beer restaurant Big Board, which had become a cause célèbre after refusing to abide by either mask or vaccine mandates. In the two weeks since its stand, it’s been forcibly closed by the D.C. government.

In announcing Big Board’s “indefinite suspension” of service on Thursday, the city’s alcohol enforcement board claimed their “continued operation places the community at risk and cannot be allowed” — a difficult claim by any measure. And in an ironic twist, the city’s decision to close Big Board was posted Monday — the same day the sunset of restaurant rules was announced by the mayor.

By the letter of the announcement, they might be allowed to reopen when the Covid orders sunset in two more weeks — plus a month of unemployment, and sans a month of much-needed business.

All Citizens Are Equal, But Some Were More Equal Than Others

The vaccine mandate itself had been in effect one month — and had been instated when citywide cases were already in decline. While popular with the white liberals who are often the shrillest voice in the city’s politics, bans on unvaccinated customers hit black voters hardest.

Feb. 14 — the day the order was repealed on one day’s notice — is the day before the enforcement of two vaccination shots went into effect. This shift would have affected the city’s black residents far more than its white residents, barring more than 55 percent of them from indoor dining, swimming, exercise, and entertainment.

While white liberals may hold the megaphone in D.C., black voters make up more than 45 percent of the population and are a powerful voting bloc. This discrimination against black business, combined with rising violent crime, had pushed Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy to join a rising chorus of lawmakers threatening to replace the federal district’s mayor with congressional control when they come into power (likely in one year).

Even beyond self-preservation, the mayor’s sudden decision also fit into the national political scene, coming just a week after Democratic governors across the country began to retreat from years of restrictions, claiming “victory over Covid” (although the statistics show it was a far more politically informed decision than a medically informed one). Politically charged science is grand and all, but in the fight between the two: politics über alles.

All ‘Science’ Is Equal, But Some Is More Equal Than Others

While both voters and businesses have seemingly been heard loud and clear, one group remains noticeably absent from any sight of relief: children.

“On March 1,” the mayor’s order reads, masks STILL will be required at… schools.”

The meaning is clear: While one of the first things the world learned about Covid was that its effect on children is minimal — and despite years of evidence that masking is detrimental to both their learning and social development — the mandates remain.

Social media is replete with videos and images of abuse, tears, and insanity in pursuit of the policy, but still — two whole years in — teachers’ unions demand it.

While in nearby Virginia parents formed a political bloc to defeat the teachers union’s governor, and in faraway San Francisco, parents have powered a recall of union allies on the city school board, by and large, school children don’t have an organized voice in American politics.

Teachers do, of course: They’re vested, entrenched, and in control, claiming to represent the interests of school districts while in reality, organizing against the parents who resist them — and the children they’re entrusted with.

It’s a harsh reality; one of the many money-mired confluences of politics and power that American Covid policy has laid bare. Children have no organized representation in American politics, and because of this, have suffered the most.

There are two more realities as well, however.

First, parents can change this; and when they do, not even the howls of the unions and their allies can stop them.

Second: They have no choice; our school children need them.

Murder Capital: Charles Allen, And The Politics Of Selling DC Out To Crime And Activists

Murder Capital: Charles Allen, And The Politics Of Selling DC Out To Crime And Activists

WASHINGTON, DC — Last Wednesday night, a woman was attacked while she drove with her 11-month-old child, just three blocks from Union Station and five from the Supreme Court.

The criminal held her at knifepoint as he forced his way into her car, brushing past the bright “Baby On Board” sticker. Video surveillance recorded her desperate screams and pleas for mercy echoing through the streets, while a passing pedestrian barely flinched. The perpetrator is still at large.

Two weeks earlier, just across the river, a gang of gunmen stole the car from a candidate for city council as he filled his tank. The highspeed operation, launched in broad daylight from an SUV, looks more like Baghdad than the United States. No arrests were made.

At 10 in the morning a month prior, at a small park across the street from the city police’s First District Substation, a father walking with his two young children was attacked by a vagrant throwing bricks. Bleeding from his head, he begged his attacker to let his infant baby and toddler be, but the man threw a second brick, fracturing the face of his eleven-month baby girl in her stroller, and leaving her with 12 stitches across her face.

A neighbor running out after he heard the screams found the father covered in blood, cradling his screaming baby.

One week before, just two blocks away in busy Eastern Market, a man smashed a brick over a young mother’s head while she walked with her child. Both of her front teeth were knocked out. The man escaped.

The nights between these awful attacks are filled with stolen cars, break-ins, car-jackings, assaults, robberies, and homicides.

You would never guess, however, that ours is a city in crisis — this past year literally suffering the largest percentage drop in population in the United States, while homicides increased by 15 percent — from how the D.C. City Council is spending its time and money.

Indeed, the 2022 budget cut the police department by 7.8 percent. Fighting back, the mayor requested a supplemental $11 million to hire 170 officers to work toward replacing the 400 — four hundred — who quit or retired since 2020’s Black Lives Matter riots, but even this was thwarted by the council; particularly arch-anti-police Member Charles Allen.

In a “compromise” led by Allen, the council approved only $5 million of the emergency request — enough to hire a mere 60 recruits — sending the remaining $6 million of the emergency request to “community violence interrupters,” an activist wet dream with little data to support its efficiency.

The council also made sure to award themselves, increasing the budget for “public election financing” — a program that makes it so every dollar a resident donates to them earns them another $5 from the taxpayer.

The system is allegedly designed to give everyone a chance (and curtail corporate-influenced corruption), but in practice it protects incumbents with higher name recognition — multiplying their larger hauls by five times, effectively burying lesser-known challengers.

Mayor Muriel Bowser had opposed the campaign finance overhaul in 2018, but after signing the bill she claimed she’d been convinced by the outpouring of voter support for her taking tax dollars to “strengthen our democracy.”

“I have heard them,” she wrote, “and I have been moved by their passion.” Her campaign’s received $2 million from the program so far this year.

“People are stoked,” one D.C. Democratic consultant on a city council campaign bragged to Axios. “People really feel empowered.”

Still, the council’s largesse doesn’t extend to public safety: In the same period of time they quadrupled their public campaign contributions, they’ve cut $100 million from the police — and overseen a simultaneous 36 percent increase in homicides.

“Residents want safety, not politics,” the council wrote in a press release explaining the decision to cut the police’s budget yet again.

Not all was lost, though: They managed to find $1,385,000 for the Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs, an office that supports things like “multicultural development,” including a Dominican Republic culture party called “Fiesta DC.”

They also approved $6,386,000 for the Office of Latino Affairs, which operates along the same lines.

The top result of a Google News search for this office’s most recent community impact is an article titled, “‘They’re Targeting Latinos’: DC leaders asked to help after robberies of contractors.” The article tells the story of a rash of armed robberies targeting Hispanic immigrant construction workers. One criminal, arrested last month, was suspected of at least 19 other attacks.

“It happens,” one victim said, “on a weekly basis.”
