Silicon Valley Bank Collapse: Latest Failure on Gavin Newsom’s Watch

Silicon Valley Bank Collapse: Latest Failure on Gavin Newsom’s Watch

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has yet to explain how the biggest bank failure since the 2008 financial crisis happened on his watch — with Silicon Valley Bank, a California bank, under California regulations.

The federal government stepped in to protect depositors on Sunday, after a run on the bank last week made it insolvent. But it was first seized by the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI).

The Silicon Valley Bank was chartered in California and headquartered in Santa Clara, in the San Francisco Bay Area. In a state with a reputation for over-regulation, however, authorities failed to step in until it was too late.

On Sunday, Newsom issued a press statement welcoming federal intervention to protect the bank’s depositors:

The Biden Administration has acted swiftly and decisively to protect the American economy and strengthen public confidence in our banking system. Their actions this weekend have calmed nerves, and had profoundly positive impacts on California — on our small businesses that can now make payroll, workers who will get their paychecks, on affordable housing projects that can continue construction, and on non-profits that can keep their doors open tomorrow. California is a pillar of the American economy, and federal leaders did the right thing, ensuring our innovation economy can continue to grow and move forward.

Newsom said nothing about the actions, or inactions, of California regulators. It is unclear why he was silent.

An article Sunday in the conservative California Globe pointed out that a member of the bank’s board was also on the board of a gender equality organization co-founded by the state’s first lady, Jennifer Siebel Newsom.

While that may not be enough to establish a conflict of interest, it does point out the degree to which the bank was well connected in California political circles — connections that may have shielded it from closer scrutiny.

Newsom has built a national reputation for “progressive” social views, but has also presided over electricity shortages, a homeless crisis, and wildfires. Most recently, he left the state for Mexico during a deadly blizzard.

Storms, Tornadoes Cause Extensive Damage Across U.S. Southeast; at Least 7 Dead

Storms, Tornadoes Cause Extensive Damage Across U.S. Southeast; at Least 7 Dead

Storms and tornadoes caused extensive damage to several communities across the U.S. Southeast on Thursday, including in Alabama, where at least 25 tornadoes were reported, according to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center.

At least six fatalities have been confirmed in Autauga County, Alabama, located in the central part of the state, Emergency Management Director Ernie Baggett told Weather.com. “The best we can tell is about 40 homes have major damage or have been completely destroyed,” Baggett added.

The county’s coroner, Buster Barber, told CNN that emergency workers are still searching for bodies.

In Selma, officials called the city a “disaster area” as a high-end EF2 or EF3 tornado rolled through and lifted debris at least 16,000 feet up into the air, WSFA 12 reported. The storm was also reported to have caused major damage to roads and vehicles in the city.

Selma officials have enforced a curfew extending from dusk to dawn Thursday night.

No fatalities have been reported in Selma, but multiple people have been injured. The tornado also hit the Dallas County Jail, and inmates are currently being transferred to other counties’ facilities in the state, according to WSFA 12.

Gov. Kay Ivey declared a state of emergency Thursday in six counties, including Chambers, Coosa, Dallas, Elmore, and Tallapoosa.

“I — along with my partners at the Alabama EMA — will continue monitoring to determine if an expanded state of emergency is needed. I am ready to be a helping hand to our local officials,” Ivey stated in a tweet from her government account.

There were over 33 separate tornado reports across the nation on Thursday, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

The National Weather Service stated that the storm was moving into Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina and issued a tornado watch in those states until 10 p.m. Eastern Thursday night.

Power outages have affected over 88,300 residents, 41,500 in Alabama, 16,500 in Tennessee, 12,300 in North Carolina, and 9,600 in South Carolina, according to utility tracker poweroutage.us.

The storm has reportedly caused damage west of Downton Atlanta in Douglas and Cobb County while also causing damage to a shopping area in Griffin, south of Atlanta, the AP reported.

One person was killed in Jackson, Georgia, when a tree fell on a vehicle due to a possible tornado in the area, USA Today reported, citing Butts County Corner Lacey Prue.

The storms in the southeast come in the aftermath of the storms that ravaged California over the past week, where officials say that 17 people have died. An EF-1 tornado was reported to have touched down in Milton, California, at around 4:10 a.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service in Sacramento.

3 NYPD Cops Attacked with Machete Near Times Square on New Year’s Eve, Suspect with Alleged Islamic Extremist Ties in Custody

3 NYPD Cops Attacked with Machete Near Times Square on New Year’s Eve, Suspect with Alleged Islamic Extremist Ties in Custody

A suspect with possible Islamic extremism ties is in custody after three police officers were injured in a machete attack near Times Square on New Year’s Eve.

The cops were attacked at approximately 10:11 p.m. on Saturday at W 52nd Street and 8th Avenue, outside a police screening area for the New Year’s Eve festivities in Times Square, New York City Police Department (NYPD) commissioner Keechant Sewell told reporters at a press conference Sunday.

“Unprovoked, a 19-year-old male approached an officer and attempted to strike him over the head with a machete. The male then struck two additional officers in the head with the machete,” Sewall said.

One of the officers fired their weapons at the suspect, hitting him in the shoulder, and he was arrested shortly after.

Two of the injured officers were taken to Bellevue Hospital, where they were noted to be in stable condition. One of the wounded officers, who had been on the force for eight years, suffered a laceration to the head. Another officer, who had graduated from the police academy on Friday, was also struck in the head and suffered a laceration injury.

Another officer, who received unknown injuries, was taken to Mount Sinai West hospital and is expected to recover.

The alleged suspect was later identified as Trevor Bickford, 19, of Wells, Maine, the New York Post reported, citing law enforcement sources.

While Bickford has no criminal history, police sources told the Post that the FBI in Boston had had the alleged suspect on their radar, including having him placed on a guardian list due to his radicalization. Furthermore, Bickford’s aunt reported his radicalization to authorities because he allegedly said he wanted to fight in Afghanistan.

Other law enforcement sources told the New York Daily News that Pickford is a “radicalized terrorist.”

The NYPD released an image of the weapon used in the attack, which commissioner Sewall described as a “large knife.”

Bickford was also taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he is being treated for his injuries. His charges are pending, the Post noted.

Police are asking for anyone who has information on the incident to come forward and contact them.

WATCH: ‘Sewer Geysers’ Explode onto San Francisco Streets in Historic Flood

Historic, heavy rainfall in the San Francisco area has caused “sewer geysers” to explode on city streets, sending jets of water high into the air as the city’s overwhelmed drains cannot contain the high volume of rainwater.

Videos of the geysers circulated online:

Jokes on social media referred to sewage, drug paraphernalia, and homeless tents washing down the street.

The rainfall neared a record high for precipitation in a single day, and more rainfall is expected this week.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported:

Saturday’s heavy storm was attributed to an atmospheric river that floated over the region for days, bringing a soggy end to 2022. After a brief respite, weather forecasts called for more of the same to start 2023.

The deluge brought San Francisco to the edge of an all-time one-day rainfall record as officials passed out sandbags. By 6 p.m., the National Weather Service reported that the city was within 9 hundredths of an inch of the all-tie record of 5.54 inches set in 1994.

Officials closed Highway 101 in both directions near South San Francisco, stranding motorists in their cars as murky water lapped at their doors. It took until 9 p.m. for both northward and southward lanes of traffic to fully reopen.

As Breitbart News recently noted, California is in the midst of a three-year drought, and this year’s winter was predicted to be another dry La Niña phenomenon. But rains came early, and several storms have combined to make the twelve days of Christmas particularly rainy — and even snowy, at higher elevations. The ski resort of Mammoth Mountain now reports the deepest snow of any such resort in the U.S., at over 165″ at the summit.

Karen Bass Widens Lead in L.A. Mayor Race as Late Ballots Are Counted

Democratic Party favorite Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA) has widened her lead to more than four percentage points in the race for Los Angeles mayor over billionaire developer Rick Caruso (D) as the tally of ballots continues.

As in the primary, Caruso jumped out to an early lead on Election Night, which slowly disappeared as vote-by-mail ballots were counted. The Democratic Party machine, which backs Bass, excels at turning out mail ballots.

As of Monday afternoon, with nearly two-thirds of the vote counted, according to the Los Angeles Times, Bass has 52.2% of the vote, while Caruso has 47.8%. In raw terms, that is a growing lead of 29,000 votes for Bass.

Other left-wing candidates also improved their results as vote-by-mail ballots have been counted. All ballots are counted if they are postmarked by Election Day, and are received by county officials within 7 days of that date.

Caruso vastly outspent Bass, tapping some $100 million of his own fortune to run a massive TV advertising campaign that saw him boost his name recognition and poll numbers. It appears not to have been enough.

Bass ran on abortion — an issue that has nothing to do with local government — and on the idea that she was the only true Democrat in the race. Caruso was once a Republican and only registered as a Democrat this year.

Caruso hoped to tap into public outrage at the city’s failure to deal with rising crime and homelessness. Bass did not offer solutions but expressed empathy for angry voters; she herself was a victim of a burglary this year.

Bass also overcame concerns about her ties to a corruption scandal at the University of Southern California, which gave her a $95,000 scholarship while she was a member of Congress that she failed to report on time.

L.A. City Council Leaders Apologize for Racist Slurs Against Black Child; ‘Negrito,’ ‘Monkey’

L.A. City Council Leaders Apologize for Racist Slurs Against Black Child; ‘Negrito,’ ‘Monkey’

Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez and Councilmember Kevin de Léon — the former president pro tem of the California State Senate — apologized Sunday for a conversation including racial slurs against the black child of a white colleague.

NBC Los Angeles reported:

Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez and Councilman Kevin de León apologized Sunday for an attack on colleague Mike Bonin during a recorded conversation in October 2021 that included racist slurs by Martinez directed at Bonin’s young son.

Martinez also called the child “ese changuito,” Spanish for “that little monkey.”

“Su negrito, like on the side,” Martinez added, using a Spanish term for a Black person that’s considered demeaning by many.

De Léon, who ran for mayor but lost in the primary, did not object to the racial slurs, and mocked Bonin over his son.

In a statement on behalf of his family, Bonin condemned the language used by Martinez and De Léon, and demanded Martinez resign:

“No child should ever be subjected to such racism, mean and dehumanizing comments,” he said of the words used by his fellow Democrats.

Bonin is not running for reelection to a third term; a left-wing “progressive,” he clashed frequently with constituents and with other civic leaders, especially over the issue of homelessness on the west side of the city.

Two People Shot Outside Republican New York Gubernatorial Candidate Lee Zeldin’s Home with Daughters Inside

Two People Shot Outside Republican New York Gubernatorial Candidate Lee Zeldin’s Home with Daughters Inside

New York Republican gubernatorial candidate Rep. Lee Zeldin had a shock to the system on Sunday when two people were shot outside his Long Island home while his teenage twin daughters were inside.

According to Zeldin, his two daughters, 16-year-olds Mikayla and Arianna, were on inside doing their homework when the shots broke out in front of their home. He and his wife, Diana, were in the car returning from the Bronx Columbus Day parade in Morris Park.

“After my daughters heard the gunshots and the screaming, they ran upstairs, locked themselves in the bathroom, and immediately called 911,” Zeldin said in a statement. “They acted very swiftly and smartly every step of the way and Diana and I are extremely proud of them.”

“The two individuals who were shot were laying down under my front porch and the bushes in front of our porch. My understanding is that they have been transported to area hospitals. I do not know their identities,” he added.

Zeldin said that his family will be working with investigators by providing security footage and lamented the New York City crime wave.

“My daughters are shaken, but OK. Like so many New Yorkers, crime has literally made its way to our front door,” he concluded.

Zeldin also told the New York Post that his daughters are “freaked out” and that a bullet was “found 30 feet from where my daughters were doing their homework.”

“Crime is out of control,” he told the Post.

“There was blood on the rock right next to the porch,” Zeldin added. “One of the shooting victims was underneath the porch. The other was underneath bushes near the porch.”

A law enforcement official told the Post that the shooting had nothing do with the congressman seeking to unseat Democrat New York Gov. Kathy Hochul. The shooting in front of Zeldin’s home comes after the NYPD Sergeants Benevolent Association endorsed him for governor.

NYC Crime Wave: Teen Attacked, Stabbed by Masked Suspects on Manhattan Subway Platform

NYC Crime Wave: Teen Attacked, Stabbed by Masked Suspects on Manhattan Subway Platform

A 17-year-old was stalked and brutally beaten by a group of masked suspects before he was stabbed on a subway platform in New York City.

According to police, the teen entered the subway system at East 53 Street and Lexington Avenue in Midtown Manhattan at around 4:22 p.m. on Saturday. He was coming off a shift working at Shake Shack, the New York Post noted.

One minute later, six individuals entered the subway station through the same location and approached the victim waiting on the northbound ‘6’ line platform.

The group of individuals proceeded to start punching and kicking the 17-year-old multiple times in the head and body. During the beating, one of the individuals pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim multiple times.

The gang of attackers then fled the station to parts unknown. New York Police Department (NYPD) officials believe that the victim and the attackers had known each other previously.

“He said he had a beef with them,” a police source told the Post, but it was unclear what the dispute was over.

EMS attended to the victim at the station and then transported him to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. While the teen received multiple staples, he was listed in stable condition.

The NYPD is searching for approximately six black males who were last seen wearing black hooded jackets, black pants, and surgical masks.

According to NYPD crime statistics, major crime in Democrat Mayor Eric Adam’s New York City has increased by 32.7 percent since last year. Assaults are up by 15.9 percent, and crime on the city’s transit system has jumped 41.6 percent.

Breitbart News recently reported that rising violent crime has emerged as a deciding issue for most American voters with the 2022 midterm elections approaching. Recent polling shows that 77 percent of voters believe violent crime is a serious issue.

As violent crime soars in Democrat-run cities, Senate and House Republicans are highlighting the Democrats’ soft-on-crime policies in their campaign messaging.
