Fact Check: Schiff, Swalwell, Omar Falsely Claim McCarthy Cut Deal to Remove Them from Certain Committees During Speaker’s Race

Fact Check: Schiff, Swalwell, Omar Falsely Claim McCarthy Cut Deal to Remove Them from Certain Committees During Speaker’s Race

CLAIM: Reps. Adam Schiff (D-CA), Eric Swalwell (D-CA), and Ilhan Omar (D-MN) claimed that Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) removed them from certain committee assignments as a result of a deal with fellow Republicans during the speakership race.

VERDICT: FALSE. McCarthy directed a letter to Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) on Tuesday, reaffirming that he was “rejecting” Schiff and Swalwell’s appointments to the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI). The congressmen from California released a joint statement with Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), who McCarthy has said should not serve in the Foreign Affairs Committee. The trio falsely claimed that McCarthy “struck a corrupt bargain in his desperate, and nearly failed, attempt to win the Speakership, a bargain that required political vengeance against the three of us,” as Politico reported.

However, McCarthy made clear his plans to remove the Democrats from these specific assignments more than a year before the speakership election in an exclusive long-form interview with Breitbart News Washington Bureau Chief Matthew Boyle in December 2021.

“The Democrats have created a new thing where they’re picking and choosing who can be on committees,” McCarthy told Boyle. “Never in the history [of Congress] have you had the majority tell the minority who can be on [a] committee. But this new standard which these Democrats have voted for — if Eric Swalwell cannot get a security clearance in the private sector, there is no reason why he should be given one to be on Intel or Homeland Security. He will not be serving there.”

“You look at Adam Schiff — he should not be serving on Intel when he has openly, knowingly now used a fake dossier, lied to the American public in the process and doesn’t have any ill will [and] says he wants to continue to do it,” McCarthy said. “We’re going to reshape — think about what happened in Afghanistan. Why did Afghanistan collapse so fast? Was the Intel Committee under Adam Schiff focused on impeachment and not on the safety of America? Why are people coming across the border that are on a terrorist watch list? What are they doing about it? Their own members on that committee say it’s not happening when it’s true.”

“We need to have an Intel Committee that looks at what’s happening around the world and keeps America safe,” he continued. “It should do exactly what it was created [to do] — overseeing of our agencies and others. We’re going to hold people to a higher standard in the process if they want to be on the Intel Committee and the training to be a part of it. Take the politics out of it.”

The interview gained substantial exposure, and this particular clip was aired in part by CNN on OutFront. Host Dana Bash acknowledged that McCarthy was “right” in his statement that Democrats set the precedent of the majority party instructing the minority party who they can appoint to committees.

Kevin McCarthy Restores Integrity To House Intel Committee By Barring Russia Hoaxer Adam Schiff

Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy kept his campaign pledge to kick former Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff from the permanent panel after the California Democrat spent years weaponizing the institution.

Last January, McCarthy promised he would strip Schiff from the premier House committee if Republicans reclaimed control of the lower chamber. Schiff’s four-year tenure as chair has been marked by remarkable abuse and grotesque politicization, with Schiff spearheading House Democrats’ impeachment efforts through the Russia hoax and allegations of Ukraine-related corruption.

California Democrat Rep. Eric Swalwell was also kicked from the committee after federal law enforcement found the congressman was likely compromised by a Chinese spy.

“I have rejected the appointments of Adam Schiff and Eric Swalwell for the House Intelligence Committee,” the speaker revealed on Twitter Tuesday night. “I am committed to returning the [House Intelligence Committee] to one of genuine honesty and credibility that regains the trust of the American people.”

As then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s right-hand man, Schiff has undermined the credibility of the committee since 2019. The congressman was so useful to Democrats, the former speaker chose him instead of Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler to preside over the first round of impeachment hearings against former President Donald Trump.

Congressional Conman

Schiff earned his favor with Pelosi as a star conman who was eager to leak stories about scandalous Russia collusion to allied media, which were thrilled to run claims that weren’t true. Meanwhile, the California congressman never hesitated to brag about having evidence that would land Trump in jail, which has been the No. 1 priority on the Democrats’ policy agenda since 2016.

[READ: The Case For Booting Adam Schiff From The House Intel Committee]

In March 2017, Schiff said on MSNBC that “there is more than circumstantial evidence” that Trump’s campaign colluded with Moscow to capture the presidential election. Schiff would then be disappointed two years later when the Democrats’ special counsel investigation on the subject found that the White House occupant had not been a covert Russian operative.

The congressman’s reaction — to what should have been good news for anyone genuinely concerned about Russian espionage in the form of a presidential double agent — was defiance. Schiff just shook his fist on Capitol Hill and said more would come out.

“In the coming weeks and months, new information will continue to be exposed through enterprising journalism, indictments by the Special Counsel, or continued investigative work by Committee Democrats and our counterparts in the Senate,” he said in a press release. “And each time this new information becomes public, Republicans will be held accountable for abandoning a critical investigation of such vital national importance.”

Of course, Schiff knew efforts to unmask Trump as a Kremlin plant were fraudulent investigations anyway. A 2109 report from the DOJ inspector general exposed how Schiff had been lying about the Russiagate conspiracy since the inception of the hoax.

Pelosi’s Intelligence Committee chairman went on to employ the same playbook for the Democrats’ witch hunt operations surrounding allegations of an illegal quid pro quo with the Ukrainian government and the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021.

McCarthy’s Pledge

As House Republican minority leader last year, McCarthy had been clear he would kick a trio of Democrat lawmakers from committees if he were eventually elected speaker. The move would follow the Democratic majority taking the unprecedented step of dictating Republican appointments in the last Congress. Georgia GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene was stripped of her assignments within a month of her swearing-in, and Pelosi barred Republican appointments to the Select Committee on Jan. 6. Pelosi’s refusal to greenlight McCarthy’s picks for the panel marked the first time in House history that minority appointments were barred.

McCarthy said Schiff and Swalwell were to be removed from the Intelligence Committee, and Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar would be taken off the Foreign Affairs Committee.

The new Republican House speaker defended his decision to follow through with plans for removal on Capitol Hill Tuesday night.

“What did Adam Schiff do as chairman of the Intel Committee?” McCarthy asked a reporter who was shouting questions. “What Adam Schiff did [was] use his power as the chairman and lied to the American public. Even the inspector general said it.”

McCarthy went on to list a litany of lies Schiff told the public while leading the legislature’s most secretive committee. The speaker chastised Schiff for smearing Republican counterparts on the Intelligence Committee as Russian propagandists and seeking to discredit the Hunter Biden laptop.

“When Devin Nunes put out a memo, [Schiff] said it was false. When we had a laptop, he used it before an election to be politics and say that it was false and say it was the Russians,” McCarthy said. “[Schiff] used his position as chairman, knowing he has information the rest of America does not, and lied to the American public.”

McCarthy made clear no Democrat lawmakers would be denied proper seats on committees to represent their constituents, but added that none of the three lawmakers whom he reassigned would serve in roles related to national security.

“They’ll serve on committees, but they will not serve on a place that has national security relevance because integrity matters to me,” McCarthy said.

The Republican House speaker restored committee assignments to Greene and Arizona Rep. Paul Gosar last week.

Watch: McCarthy Savages Reporter for Defending Schiff, Swalwell

Watch: McCarthy Savages Reporter for Defending Schiff, Swalwell

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) tore into a reporter Tuesday after she interrupted him during a press conference as he was speaking about his decision to reject Reps. Eric Swalwell (R-CA) and Adam Schiff (R-CA) from the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

The reporter, PBS Newshour’s Lisa Desjardins, compared embattled Rep. George Santos (R-NY) to Swalwell and Schiff, saying, “You have said that lying to us is something that means you should be removed from the Intelligence Committee, but why is it not a factor [for Santos]?”

The question came after McCarthy had just announced he would reject House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ (D-NY) selections of Swalwell and Schiff to the Intel Committee and after the Republican Steering Committee placed Santos on two low-profile committees whose members do not have access to classified information in the way that Intel Committee members do.

As McCarthy began explaining that Santos had been elected by his district, Desjardins cut him off and said, “You’re not answering my question.”

“Why is lying one standard for Democrats and another for Republicans?” Desjardins asked.

McCarthy responded, “Let me be very clear and respectful to you. You asked me a question. When I answer it, it’s the answer to your question. You don’t get to determine whether I answer your question or not, okay, in all respect.”

Watch:

McCarthy continued, “I’m going to be very clear with you. The Intel Committee is different. You know why? Because what happens in the Intel Committee, you don’t know. What happens in the Intel Committee, all of the secrets going on in the world, other members of Congress don’t know.”

McCarthy said rejecting the pair of California Democrats from the panel was a matter of “national security.”

Schiff, while serving as chair of the Intel Committee, perpetuated the Trump-Russia collusion theory, which the Justice Department later shut down as false. Schiff once said he had “more than circumstantial evidence” of collusion, ultimately leading all GOP members of the committee to call for his resignation as chairman.

Schiff, while serving as the lead impeachment manager in the first impeachment against former President Donald Trump, also took heat for reading out a made-up call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for dramatic effect as Democrats moved to impeach Trump.

Swalwell, for his part, was found by the FBI to have once had ties to a Chinese spy named Fang Fang.

“I believe there’s 200 other Democrats that can serve on the committee,” McCarthy said. “Those voters elected Schiff even though he lied. Those voters elected Swalwell even though he lied to the American public too. … I’ll respect his voters too, and they’ll serve on committees, but they will not serve on a place that has national security because integrity matters to me.”

Adam Schiff Vows Revenge as Kevin McCarthy Blocks Him, Eric Swalwell from Intelligence Committee

Adam Schiff Vows Revenge as Kevin McCarthy Blocks Him, Eric Swalwell from Intelligence Committee

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) vowed revenge after House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) indicated he would keep Schiff and Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) off the House Intelligence Committee.

“Kevin McCarthy just kicked me and @RepSwalwell off the Intelligence Committee. This is petty, political payback for investigating Donald Trump,” Schiff tweeted. “If he thinks this will stop me, he will soon find out just how wrong he is. I will always defend our democracy.”

Earlier in the month, McCarthy indicated to reporters that he plans to follow through on his promise to keep Schiff and Swalwell off of the Intelligence committee.

During his time as Chairman of the Intelligence Committee, Schiff promoted the debunked Trump-Russia collusion theory. Further, while serving as the lead impeachment manager, Schiff “famously read out a made-up call between [former president Donald] Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for dramatic effect amid Democrats moving to impeach Trump,” as Breitbart News reported.

“Adam Schiff openly lied to the American public,” McCarthy told reporters at a press conference earlier this month. “He put America for four years through an impeachment that he knew was a lie at the same time we had Ukraine, at the same time we had Afghanistan collapse. Was that the role of the Intel Committee? No.”

On the other hand, Swalwell caught flak from McCarthy over his intimate sexual relationship with a Chinese spy named Fang Fang.

“Let me phrase something very direct to you: if you got the briefing I got from the FBI, you wouldn’t have Swalwell on any committee,” McCarthy told reporters. “He cannot get a security clearance in the private sector.”

When Republicans held the minority in the previous Congress, McCarthy consistently pledged to keep Schiff and Swalwell off the Intel Committee if the GOP regained the majority and he controlled the speakership.

“I’ll promise you this — when I’m Speaker, [Schiff] will not be on the Intel Committee anymore,” McCarthy told Fox News in June. “And you know what else, Swalwell won’t either. I don’t know if this is a high bar. But if you have relations with a Chinese spy, you shouldn’t be allowed to be on the Intel Committee.”

McCarthy to Reporters: You Wouldn’t Have Democrat Eric Swalwell on Any Committees if You Received FBI Briefing I Did

McCarthy to Reporters: You Wouldn’t Have Democrat Eric Swalwell on Any Committees if You Received FBI Briefing I Did

Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) blasted Rep Eric Swalwell (D-CA) at a press conference Thursday, telling reporters they would never give the Democrat a committee position if they received the same briefing from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) that he did.

“Let me phrase something very direct to you: if you got the briefing I got from the FBI, you wouldn’t have Swalwell on any committee,” McCarthy told reporters.

Breitbart News published an explosive exclusive report in August 2021 regarding a classified report indicating Swalwell was in an intimate sexual relationship with a Chinese spy named Fang Fang. Moreover, Fang Fang also “took part in fundraising activity for Swalwell’s 2014 re-election campaign, according to a Bay Area political operative,” as Axios reported in 2020.

“He cannot get a security clearance in the private sector, so would you like to give him a government clearance?” McCarthy asked reporters on Thursday.

He added that Democrats in the last Congress had hundreds of other members, not surrounded by security questions, who could have served on the committee instead, but they opted to stick with Swalwell:

You’re going to tell me that there’s 200 other Democrats that couldn’t fill that slot, but you kept him on it? The only way that they even knew it came forward is when they went to nominate him to the Intel Committee and then the FBI came and told the leadership then, “He’s got a problem.” And they kept him on. That jeopardized all of us.

The Speaker also reiterated that Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) would be denied an Intelligence Committee appointment because he “openly lied to the American public.”

“He put America, for four years, through an impeachment that he knew was a lie,” McCarthy said. “At the same time, we had Ukraine. At the same time, we had Afghanistan collapse. Was that the role of the Intel Committee? No.”

He added that he is bringing the Intelligence Committee “back to what the jurisdiction is supposed to do, forward-looking to keep this country safe.”

The moves mark a promise kept by McCarthy, who vowed in June the duo would not serve on the Intelligence Committee in the 118th Congress while appearing on Fox News Channel’s Jesse Watters Primetime.

“I’ll promise you this — when I’m Speaker, [Schiff] will not be on the Intel Committee anymore,” McCarthy said. “And you know what else, Swalwell won’t either. I don’t know if this is a high bar. But if you have relations with a Chinese spy, you shouldn’t be allowed to be on the Intel Committee.”

History Rhyming – Twitter Files Supplemental: House Intelligence Committee Instructing Twitter on Content to Control & Remove

History Rhyming – Twitter Files Supplemental: House Intelligence Committee Instructing Twitter on Content to Control & Remove

Comrades, history rhymes…

In his latest review of the Twitter Files, a supplemental to drive home the importance of what is visible – and what was kept hidden, Matt Taibbi focuses attention on the activity of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI), and how they monitored public comments on Twitter and gave instructions to the platform on what content should be removed and/or controlled.

Pause for a moment and think about that.

The House Intelligence Committee, that’s the government of the United States folks, assigning staff to monitor Twitter conversation and remove or control public commentary. Using the justification of “national security interests”, Adam Schiff was telling a social media platform what content should be permitted to exist and what content should be removed.

The ‘Stasi’ used to monitor phone calls and conduct targeting operations based on intercepted communication.   In the modern era, the Twitter Files clearly demonstrate, with an unequivocal amount of evidence, that the United States Government was/is monitoring social media content and then dispatching FBI officers based on intercepted public communication.

This is the House Intelligence Committee doing this.  This is our taxpayer money funding this.

I really don’t want to write anything further on the specifics of this one.  I would rather just like to let these facts simmer in our minds as we contemplate the ramifications of what is now being outlined within this very specific release.

The need for control is a reaction to fear.

What exactly is it the Adam Schiff’s and Intelligence Community of the United States Government is fearful of?

Apparently, there’s a House subcommittee about to begin under the auspices of looking at weaponized government against the people.

I hope the members of that committee are sitting quietly alone somewhere, thinking, evaluating and contemplating what this example is showing us.

I know what’s there.

You know what’s there.

None of us are pretending.

Hope is not a strategy.

Specific language in the resolution creating the committee, empowers it to review “ongoing federal investigations.”

By Ben Whedon

The upcoming House subcommittee established to review the political “weaponization” of federal agencies is preparing to take aim at the federal agencies investigating former President Donald Trump, including the Department of Justice and FBI.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy agreed to the creation of the panel, among other concessions to House conservatives, as part of a deal that allowed him to secure enough support to claim the gavel.

Specific language in the resolution creating the committee, empowers it to review “ongoing federal investigations,” according to The Hill, meaning House lawmakers could potentially explore federal actions against Trump.

Both the Department of Justice and the FBI are pursuing investigations against the former president for his alleged mishandling of classified materials. The FBI raided Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in August of last year, after previously securing his voluntary cooperation in their investigation. The former president had previously complied with a subpoena and permitted agents to examine his personal safe and to remove many documents they had sought.

The raid prompted outrage on the political right, with many GOP leaders, including now-Speaker McCarthy vowing to investigate the bureau’s actions.

To that end, the committee will also have the power to access the same information to which the House Intelligence Committee is privy, giving panel members the ability to view some of the intelligence community’s most closely guarded materials.

Democrats have excoriated the subcommittee, despite the appointment of five party members to the body.

“Jim Jordan and Kevin McCarthy claim to be investigating the weaponization of the federal government when, in fact, this new select committee is the weapon itself. It is specifically designed to inject extremist politics into our justice system and shield the MAGA movement from the legal consequences of their actions,” Democratic New York Rep. Jerry Nadler told ABC News.

Republicans Release ‘Unclassified’ Report of COVID Origins Before Taking over House Majority

Republicans Release ‘Unclassified’ Report of COVID Origins Before Taking over House Majority

House Intelligence Committee Republicans released an unclassified summary of their report on the origins of the Chinese coronavirus Wednesday night, less than a month before the party takes control of the House.

The report, released on Wednesday night by the minority staff members of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, was led by Rep. Brad Wenstrup (R-OH). It concluded that there have been “indications” that the coronavirus was  “tied to China’s biological weapons research program” and had “spilled over” to the human population during testing. However, the committee did not see any indication that it was “intentionally released” by the Chinese military”:

Based on our investigation involving a variety of public and non-public information, we conclude that there are indications that SARS-CoV-2 may have been tied to China’s biological weapons research program and spilled over to the human population during a lab-related incident at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV). The IC has failed to adequately address this information. The Committee has not seen any indications that the Chinese military intentionally released SARS-CoV-2. [Emphasis added.]

The minority report also indicated that the United States Intelligence Community (IC) “failed to inform” the public and Congress about the information in the previous declassified version of the IC’s report. The Republicans believed that the information that was withheld “likely skewed the public’s understanding of key issues”:

The IC’s declassified version also withheld other key information from the public that was in the classified version. The Committee believes that this vital information could have been included in the declassified version without harming national security. In fact, these omissions likely skewed the public’s understanding of key issues. The IC should be transparent regarding what it does or does not know regarding the relationship between the PLA’s Fifth Institute of the Academy of Military Medical Sciences (AMMS), which China has publicly admitted conducts bioweapons research and coronavirus experiments, and the WIV, particularly during 2019. [Emphasis added.]

The IC has failed to comply with numerous requests for more information on these issues. The Committee will continue to press the IC to share the information it has and to explain why information was omitted from the declassified and classified reports. [Emphasis added.]

“We just want to get to the truth and value the importance of understanding the origins of COVID. It has to do with our national security or national health security,” Wenstrup told reporters on Thursday.

The congressman went on to say that the declassified report released on Wednesday is ultimately just the beginning of what the Republicans are finding out as his party is set to take control of the House in January. Wenstrup added that he hopes to declassify the GOP’s classified report for the general public.

“You know, in our report, no one is saying that we got clear evidence that this was that they did something intentional. We don’t have the smoking gun, but we’re just trying to get to the truth, and I think that all Americans should be in favor of that,” he added. “As we dig deeper, maybe we’ll come to a conclusion that it didn’t come from the lab, but right now, there’s no evidence that it came from nature, and normally to understand some of the science very deeply.”

The report was released the day after incoming Oversight Committee chair Rep. James Comer (R-KY), announced his committee was launching an investigation into the origins of the Chinese coronavirus. The committee requested interviews with Dr. Anthony Fauci and dozens of other virologists and government officials.
