Day 2: Praying for Revival

That we would appreciate the power of prayer

18 See how these enemies insult You, Lord.
A foolish nation has dishonoured Your name.

20 Remember Your covenant promises,
for the land is full of darkness and violence!

21 Don’t let the downtrodden be humiliated again.
Instead, let the poor and needy praise Your name.

22 Arise, O God, and defend Your cause.

– Psalm 74:18,20-21,22a

As a young Christian, I remember singing old hymns about revival like: “There shall be showers of blessing…. precious reviving again”, “Revive Thy work O Lord” or “Revival is our present need” and an even older hymn — “Hallelujah, send the glory; revive us again.”

I have not seen a revival in my lifetime, and it is fifty-five years ago that I sang those hymns. But I join in continually praying for revival in this Great Southland of the Holy Spirit and across the world.

Psalm 74 has been called a Revival Prayer. The writer comes to the realisation that, because of sin, God seems to be far away, and they feel rejected. So, they cry out to God that He might remember them.

But if the people of God sin and do not seek forgiveness through confession, there are consequences — not only for individuals but for the nation. Verse 4 reminds us that Satan and the enemies of God and His people start to “shout their battle cries… and set up battle standards.” They destroy even the sanctuary of God.

As Christians, we need to realise that God, His honour and His kingdom’s growth are most important. Revival is not for our benefit to celebrate and be happy. It is all about honouring God’s name, exalting Him and praising Him in our lives, in our nation and on the earth.

In verses 22 and 23, the Psalmist says: “Do something God! Defend yourself.” The Psalmist knows that God is all-powerful and that He can handle any attack and do the impossible.

When we fully appreciate the power of God, the Almighty One to whom we pray, we will begin to pray more boldly with greater faith that moves the hand of God. (Psalm 74:10–17)

“The man who can get believers to praying would, under God, usher in the greatest revival that the world has ever known.” (Leonard Ravenhill, Why Revival Tarries)

God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, we acknowledge Your goodness and mercy that follows us all the days of our life.

We confess before You our sinfulness — personal and national — realising that there are consequences. Lord, have mercy.

Forgive us for not honouring You as we should. We seek to honour Your name, exalting You to the highest place in our lives and in our nation and on the earth.

In the words of Psalm 74, “Do something, God.” You are powerful. You are sovereign. Nothing is impossible for You. Show your hand in this nation of Australia at this time.

Yes, send revival. In the words of Mary in Luke chapter 1 verse 38 — I am the Lord’s servant; may it be unto me as You will. Send revival. Let it begin in me to the honour and glory of Jesus Christ, forever and ever. Amen and amen.
