Was the Wieambilla Shooting an Act of Christian Terrorism?

Tracy Linford, the Deputy Police Commissioner of Queensland, recently described the fatal shooting of two police officers at a property at Wieambilla as an act of Christian terrorism. Ms Linford said that the bizarre love triangle involving three Train family members operated as an “autonomous cell”, with their actions labelled as being “religiously motivated”.

Significantly, the Deputy Police Commissioner stated in the press conference:

“What we’ve been able to glean from that information is that the Train family members     subscribe to what we would call a broad Christian fundamentalist belief system, known as premillennialism.

Whilst the behaviour was similar in some respect to sovereign citizens, we don’t believe this was connected to a sovereign citizen ideology, we believe it’s connected to the Christian extremist ideology.

There was a belief that Christ will return to the Earth… and provide peace and prosperity.

But it will be preceded by an era, or a period of time of tribulation, widespread destruction and suffering.

They started preparing for the end of days.”

However, believing that Jesus is going to physically return to earth or that we are living in the last days is not “Christian extremist ideology”, but traditional, mainstream belief. And what’s more, there is no denomination anywhere that would condone the use of violence. Instead, one of the chief obligations of a follower of Jesus is to submit to governing authorities as we would submit to God Himself (i.e. Rom. 13:1-5; 1 Pet. 2:13-17).

Correlation Doesn’t Equal Causation

There’s a fundamental principle that should be drilled into all scientific — as well as journalistic — investigation, and that is correlation doesn’t equal causation. Just because someone holds to a certain ideological position in one, doesn’t mean that it directly relates to another.

In the same way, to blame the horrific events which occurred in December last year on a certain interpretation of a book in the Bible is just as irresponsible as claiming that the Queensland Department of Education was responsible for Gareth Train’s murderous actions because he was a former public school principal.

A Christian Leader’s Response

Martyn Iles, the Director of the Australian Christian Lobby, has publicly challenged the Queensland Deputy Police Commissioner to substantiate her claims. Iles wrote on social media:

The most popular eschatology in Evangelical and Pentecostal circles is apparently a motive for terrorism.

It is the first time “Christian ideology” (their words) has been linked to a terror attack.

I call on Deputy Commissioner Linford to point out where in premillennialism there is any authority given whatsoever for a person to use premeditated violence.

She can’t, because there isn’t.

Submission to the state is taught in 3 places in the New Testament letters. Jesus Himself submitted to Pilate’s judgement, acknowledging the man’s authority. He also said, “My kingdom is not of this world, or else My servants would fight.”

Premillennialism affirms the absolute authority of these scriptures.

We’re living in clown world.

In Ancient Rome, the authorities blamed Christianity for the evils of their day because they either hated it, or were totally ignorant concerning it.

I guess history can repeat.

And then later, in a follow-up comment, Iles further wrote:

Premillenialism of the kind described in this instance has been around since 1845 and  globally popular since the 1960s… And yet… Not one single terror event has ever been perpetuated in the name of this belief… until now? Again, clown world.

The Underlying Problem of Biblical Illiteracy

As an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church of Australia, my observation has been that politicians, those holding public office, and especially journalists, are generally illiterate when it comes to the teaching of the Bible. Mind you, this doesn’t stop them from waxing eloquent as to what they think the Bible says, or at least, what they would like it to mean. But, for the most part, when it comes to religion, very few journalists don’t know what the hell (pun intended) they are talking about.

Martyn Iles is right. Not a single terror event has ever been perpetuated in the name of premillennialism. Indeed, if one were to sit down and read what the book of Revelation actually says, you would quickly find that it condemns all forms of violence (e.g. Rev. 9:21; 21:8). In fact, it actually says that people will be specifically judged for crimes such as murder. And this remains true, no matter what interpretation of the “millennium” one takes.

Alice Springs Violence: Who Has the Answers?

We are living in an era where social breakdown and moral decay are drawing heavily on the state’s resources and collective wisdom. The elucidative bankruptcy of the state’s ‘wise men’ is being exposed, as surely as it was in the ancient empires of Egypt and Babylon.

The next morning Pharaoh was very disturbed by the dreams. So he called for all the magicians and wise men of Egypt. When Pharaoh told them his dreams, not one of them could tell him what they meant. ~ Genesis 41:8

The Chaldeans answered the king and said, “There is not a man on earth who can meet the king’s demand, for no great and powerful king has asked such a thing of any magician or enchanter or Chaldean.” ~ Daniel 2:10

Take the very broken town of Alice Springs, for example. Overnight reports of an axe attack on a teenager by three indigenous youth is just one violent incident among countless attacks occurring every day in Alice Springs. Our governments appear at a complete loss as to what to do. The ‘wise men’ have no answers.

Generational Trauma

Years ago, I closely followed the violence that erupted in Aurukun, Queensland when teachers were twice evacuated after children threatened the principal with knives and machetes. Seven years on, Aurukun still resembles a war zone. Recent reports reveal dwindling attendance at the school, the closure of essential services, a council without a CEO, and residents walking the streets with metal fence pickets and crossbows. Many locals are reluctant to leave their homes.

Many of the insights I gained, as I studied Aurukun’s widely discussed demise in 2016, apply to the collapse into chaos of Alice Springs. There is talk of rugby league identities coming to Alice Springs to help in some way. This reminds me of the goodwill demonstrated in 2016 by Australian rugby league player, Johnathan Thurston, when he used a post-State-of-Origin interview to encourage children in the embattled community of Aurukun. “There’s obviously been a lot of trouble up there,” he said, “so to all the students there, I just want you to believe in yourselves and keep turning up to school.” The following day, an Aurukun teacher reported that the children cheered when they heard Thurston reaching out to them.

And yet for all such gestures of goodwill by celebrities like Thurston, and for all the strategising by government agencies, I don’t think all the king’s horses and all the king’s men can put Alice Spring back together again, anymore than they could put Aurukun back together again. A certain wisdom is needed that transcends the most brilliant intellect of fallen men.

Exploitation and Alcoholism

Common to both the demise of Aurukun and the ruin of Alice Springs is the sidelining of the church and the introduction of alcohol. For Aurukun, the decade following the introduction of alcohol was the darkest decade in the history of the community. Herbert Yunkaporta, a pastor born and raised in Aurukun, laments, “I’ll tell you this: the community is asleep. When did they go to sleep? In the mid-eighties. This is a deep crisis. Aurukun needs help.” There must have been a cry of lament in Alice Springs by many Aboriginal elders when alcohol restrictions were removed six months ago.

Insights from the demise of Aurukun can help in understanding the lawlessness on display in Alice Springs. Aurukun’s history is a tragic story that begins with broken promises and broken dreams. It is a story of Goliath-like state and corporate interests outmuscling local and cultural leadership in a greedy grab for Aurukun’s vast bauxite reserves. It was Aurukun’s buried treasure that attracted mining leases and state administrators in the 1970s, followed by the imposition of a wet canteen in the 1980s. In the face of vehement objection by community elders, trucks laden with beer rolled into the town in 1985 and Aurukun took a nosedive.

Faith and Prosperity

It’s hard to imagine that, as recently as 1970, there was no hint of the misery that would engulf Aurukun. Professor Sutton describes his experience of Aurukun in the early 1970s:

Suicide was unknown. People who survived the rigours of infancy and early childhood had a good chance of living to their seventies…

Local men mustered cattle and ran the local butcher shop, logged and sawed the timber for house building, built the housing and other constructions, welded and fixed vehicles in the workshop, and worked in the vegetable gardens, under a minimal set of mission supervisors.

Women not wholly engaged in child-rearing worked in the general store, clothing store, school, hospital and post office.

(The Politics of Suffering, Melbourne University Press, 2010, p. 40)

This somewhat idyllic life, as described by Sutton, was the peaceful and industrious heritage left by the Presbyterian Church and the Archer River Mission Station. Despite being poorly funded, and notwithstanding its shortcomings, the mission station founded in 1904 is remembered for being supportive of Aboriginal rights and self-determination.

Aurukun sawmill circa 1950

Aurukun sawmill, circa 1950. State Library of Queensland.

Natasha Robinson reports that in 1975, the “progressive [Presbyterian] church was advocating land rights, bilingual education and a return to outstation life.” A Queensland Government report describes the mission superintendents from 1924 to 1965, Rev. Bill Mackenzie and his wife, as being “unusually liberal in their support for their continuation of Bora traditions, traditional hunting and the use of Wik languages.”

Without a doubt, the church played an essential role in laying the platform for the 1970s optimism and social cohesion that existed in Aurukun. There was hope and resourcefulness in the community, a healthy work ethic, a trustworthy moral compass, and emerging cultural leadership.

Secularism and Moral Decay

While it’s not popular to say these days, the church led the Aboriginal community well and was the chief supporter of Aurukun’s journey to self-determination. Tragically, the church would be sidelined as the lucre and liquor interests exploited Aurukun and sabotaged its promising future. This tragedy in Aurukun is not dissimilar to that facing Alice Springs.

There is a direct correlation between social breakdown and moral decay and the sidelining of the church. This is evident in Aurukun, Alice Springs, and indeed in towns and cities across Australia. The church is irreplaceable as both preserving agent and physician. Where the church is maligned and neutralised (as in the case of Joseph in Egypt and Daniel in Babylon), the state finds itself ill-equipped to halt moral decay or heal society’s wounds.

Both ancient and modern history teach us that the silencing and imprisoning of the church is never in the interest of society. Hitler scorched Germany’s soul with his murderous agenda — something he could only achieve with the church rendered dormant. With the exception of lone prophetic voices, like Lutheran pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer, there was little moral resistance to Hitler. The removal of the church and its prophetic voice left Germany in great darkness.

Greg Sheridan describes the rise of a “new religion of aggressive secularism” that is filling a void in Australia that used to be occupied by the church. While this aggressive secularism is “more self-confident and fundamentalist than ever,” he astutely observes that the western church is nowhere to be seen or heard because, “widespread, prolonged affluence has been more effective than oppression ever was in killing religious belief and practice.”

I know where Sheridan is coming from. While we have not really known tribulation and persecution, the cares of life and the deceitfulness of riches have been effective in choking out the potent Word of God and rendering the western church unfruitful.

Losing Our Savour

Jesus warned about the church losing relevance. He warned that if the salt loses its saltiness, and its preservation qualities are squandered; it is good for nothing except road base (Matthew 5:13). He taught that lamps that no longer provide light must be removed (Revelation 2:5). The western church would do well to heed these warnings and strengthen the things that remain.

In many ways, we have failed in our responsibility to be salt and light in the world. Many young people in the western church have been short-changed. Rather than energising them and capturing their hearts with a truly noble cause to die for, church leaders have fed them entertainment and the merits of upward social mobility.

The church always thrives when it believes and embraces its true mission statement, as taught by Christ himself. “If any man would come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me.” Self-denial, humility, and servanthood may have never been attractive, worldly ideals but these qualities underpin a satisfying and meaningful life and they give the church relevance.

The church, when true to form, has the power to provide young people with vision and intrinsic motivation for living a purposeful and selfless life. This is what Aurukun had, I believe. And this is what Aurukun and Alice Springs and Australia need today. This is what worked for David Wilkerson, founder of Teen Challenge, when he spent himself for New York’s bloodthirsty gangs in the late 1950s.

The church is the remedy to society’s ills. It is the preserving agent against moral decay and social breakdown. It is the steward of the Balm of Gilead that alone can heal the most broken lives. I remain a believer in the power of the Gospel message and what it can achieve when lived out. However, the western church has dropped the ball and we have work to do. And it is in our current, seemingly ‘irrelevant’ condition that we must once again prove our worth.

Ironically, the church is facing a fight for its existence at a time when our nation needs us the most. As a pastor and man of God, Herbert Yunkaporta knows the answer for Aurukun and troubled communities like Alice Springs.

“Aurukun needs to be awakened. When we throw a rock in the water, where does the ripple effect begin? From the inside out. We want to make a ripple effect in each and every individual man and young man, by helping them to restore what was lost.”

The hope for mankind and for our communities truly is a change in the human heart; a transformation of the human condition. And only the living organism, that is the church, can offer that miraculous remedy.

It is through the power of the Gospel that broken men and women receive true cleansing, a new heart, and the energising presence of the Creator Himself. It is in the God-breathed Scriptures that we find the blueprint for peaceful and productive societies. Australia boasts natural resources and underground treasure that are the envy of the world.

And yet it will be the rediscovery of the treasure in our people that will lead to the freedom and triumph of troubled towns like Aurukun and Alice Springs. Exploration companies and mining interests cannot help here. The state must ask for the church’s help. The church alone is the steward of the Gospel, wherein is the power to transform men and women “from the inside out.”

And Pharaoh said to his servants,
“Can we find a man like this, in whom is the Spirit of God?”

there is none so discerning and wise as you are.”

Media Seems to Sympathise with the So-Called “Woman” Being Executed…

… rather than the actual woman he raped and murdered.

“(A fellow) inmate described McLaughlin as a painfully shy person who came out of her shell after deciding to transition.

‘She always had a smile and a dad joke,’ Hicklin said. ‘If you ever talked to her, it was always with the dad jokes.’”

Can you imagine the media talking about any other convicted rapist and murderer this way?

Amber McLaughlin was put to death by the state of Missouri last week for the rape and murder of former girlfriend Beverly Guenther.

The two had been dating when Amber McLaughlin, a biological man, had been living as Scott McLaughlin.

Scott McLaughlin

Scott McLaughlin didn’t take well to being dumped.

He repeatedly stalked Guenther who, as a result, had to be regularly escorted from her workplace to her car by police.

McLaughlin eventually violated a restraining order to rape and then repeatedly stab his former girlfriend with a steak knife before dumping her body near the Mississippi River.

McLaughlin was convicted of first-degree murder. Oh, and in prison, he transitioned into a female.

Media Bias

The problem for the media is that McLaughlin’s behaviour was not terribly ladylike. When women are sad, they binge eat and change their hair.

Stalking, breaking restraining orders, raping and stabbing people are the sorts of things jilted men do.

All of which may explain why The Guardian, when reporting news of McLaughlin’s execution, emphasised McLaughlin’s shy personality, lovely smile, and talent for telling jokes.

It may also explain why The Guardian neglected to mention the rapey part.

Oh, and it might also explain why The Guardian forgot to tell readers that McLaughlin was incarcerated in 1992 for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old.

You wouldn’t want to be relying on The Guardian for actual news.

Victim Mentality

But if you’re interested in knowing that McLaughlin was the first openly transgendered person to be executed in the US, well then The Guardian doesn’t let you down.

A Missouri inmate has been put to death for a 2003 killing, becoming what is believed to be the first transgender woman executed in the US.”

You could be forgiven for thinking that McLaughlin was “executed” for being “the first transgender woman” rather than “put to death for a killing”.

“There is no known case of an openly transgender person being executed in the US before, according to the anti-execution Death Penalty Information Center.”

What has being “openly” trans got to do with anything? McLaughlin wasn’t executed because he is trans, as if he is the one being persecuted.

But the trans washing continued:

“McLaughlin was a painfully shy person who came out of her shell after deciding to transition… always having a smile and a joke.”

I’m not sure how being painfully shy or having a cute smile has anything to do with the stalking, the raping and the stabbing.

What must Beverly Guenther’s grieving family think when they read media reports?

Beverly Guenther

Trans ideology (some might say theology) has so captured the mass media that they almost seem to sympathise with the so-called “woman” being executed rather than the actual woman he raped and murdered.

Leftists Bent on Mayhem and Destruction

This is why the left is so addicted to tearing things down.

That the left prefers violence and destruction over reason and debate should be crystal clear by now. It seems the daily newspaper headlines give us really good indications of this. And the headlines we woke up to this morning offer even further examples of this — but more on that in a moment. Here I want to present a biblical perspective on these matters.

A very famous statement made by Jesus as found in John 10:10 is this: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” There Jesus was contrasting Himself as the true shepherd with the false shepherds. And by extension, the verse gives us a very good picture of the real enemy — the devil himself.

Diabolical

Satan is in the business of stealing, killing and destroying. Our God is a God of life while the enemy is fixated on death and destruction. While no political or ideological grouping is above resembling the devil in these ways, it seems a good case can be made that the radical secular left especially bears a real family likeness to the thief of John 10.

These radicals seem fixated on stealing and killing and destroying. The culture of death is of course the domain of the secular left. And since the left is so much enamoured with socialism, which is a form of theft, they can certainly be accused of favouring stealing as well.

But it is this obsession with destruction that I want to focus on here. Rioting, looting, and trying to burn down cities as they protest various causes is of course a hallmark of the left. The left seems committed to destruction, mayhem, violence and intimidation. That is how they ‘make their case’.

They do not really have sound arguments or logic on their side, so simply destroying things is how they proceed. Sure, it is not just the secular left who act this way. One can think of how political Islam does similar things. Groups like ISIS for example are well known for destroying anything they regard as an affront to Islam.

So whether it is the Taliban or ISIS blowing up or hammering ancient sculptures and statues, or BLM marchers tearing down newer statues today and rioting in the streets, or the green militants trying to destroy great works of art — they are all cut from the same cloth. Violence and destruction are their preferred MO.

Mental Environmentalists

‘Works of art?’ you say. Yes, you must have missed the latest craze of the crazed left: attacking famous works of art in the name of saving the planet. There have been a number of cases of this occurring recently. As one news report explains:

Climate change protesters threw soup over Vincent Van Gogh’s Sunflowers at London’s National Gallery on Friday, the Just Stop Oil campaign group said. The group, which has been holding protests for the last fortnight in the British capital, released a video showing two women walking into the gallery and throwing tins of Heinz tomato soup at the painting. It is one of five versions of the Van Gogh painting on display in museums and galleries around the world.

Both women were arrested for criminal damage and aggravated trespass, police said. Just Stop Oil said the painting, which dates to 1888, had a value of $US84.2 million. An international movement that has seen climate activists smear cake across the Mona Lisa and superglue their hands to masterpieces by Sandro Botticelli, Vincent van Gogh and Umberto Boccioni has also arrived in Australia.

Two Extinction Rebellion protesters were recently arrested at the National Gallery of Victoria after glueing themselves to the 1951 Picasso painting Massacre in Korea. At their feet lay a banner reading “Climate Chaos = War + Famine”. A spokesperson from the gallery said there was some minor damage to the frame, but that the painting itself was undamaged, likely due to a protective varnish.

The group’s activists have been blocking roads around the British parliament over the last few days. Last Sunday, police said that more than 100 people had been arrested after a weekend of protest-related activity by environmental groups.

Hmm, so in the name of saving and preserving things — in this case, the planet supposedly — these nutters are going on a rampage, destroying priceless artworks to show their moral superiority. Hmm, sounds just like ISIS to me. It is the same religious zeal to support a cause through violence and destruction.

As to these yokels gluing themselves to walls or pavements or streets, my thoughts — also echoed by my wife — is that they should just be left there to fend for themselves! Give them a few days super-glued to a busy sidewalk or street and see how long before they beg for help.

They are idiots, and all they can do is destroy and tear down, not build up. Such is how the left operates. No surprises here. Nothing is sacred for these violent hoons. But as their destructive antics become even more alarming, one fears what lies ahead.

We know that because of terrorists, we all pay a huge price right now when it comes to airport security. With these green terrorists now targeting art galleries, we can expect to see the need for far more stringent security measures being put in place there, with the costs to us visitors going up, and the ability to get close to some of these great works of art taken away from us. Thanks for that you green clowns.

Three noted figures from England can be referred to here in this regard. The late Christian philosopher Roger Scruton wrote:

“Good things are easily destroyed, but not easily created… The work of destruction is quick, easy and exhilarating; the work of creation is slow, laborious and dull. That is one of the lessons of the twentieth century.”

Sir Winston Churchill said this:

“To build may have to be the slow and laborious task of years. To destroy can be the thoughtless act of a single day.”

And conservative Jewish writer Melanie Phillips put it this way:

“The great battles today are not between left and right. They are between morality and nihilism, truth and lies, justice and injustice, freedom and totalitarianism, and Judeo-Christian values and the would-be destroyers of the West both within and without.”

While I take Melanie’s point, there is still a political and ideological divide here. Conservatives, as the name implies, like to conserve. We like to preserve what is good in a culture. We like to maintain order amid chaos, and some beauty amongst ugliness. But the radical left simply wants to tear down and destroy.

It is their way or the highway. And their way usually seems to gravitate towards bullying, intimidation, violence, aggression and destruction. As I say, they do a good job of showing off the family likeness. They nicely reflect their real mentor who comes only to ‘steal, kill and destroy.’

Pro-life Volunteer Shot in the Back Over Abortion Bill

The elderly Right to Life volunteer received a ‘gunshot wound to the back/shoulder while leaving a residence during a heated conversation.’

Lila Rose, founder of Live Action, is demanding justice for a broad range of attacks against pro-life volunteers, after an 84-year-old Right to Life Michigan volunteer was shot in the back.

In a September 24 press release, Right to Life reported that an as-yet-unnamed elderly volunteer from Lake Odessa received a ‘gunshot wound to the back/shoulder, while leaving a residence during a heated conversation.’

Interfering Assailant

The RTL volunteer was door-knocking in the area to inform citizens about the dangers of a pro-abortion bill known as Proposal 3, when the alleged shooter, who wasn’t part of the conversation, reportedly attacked the 84-year-old volunteer.

RTL added that there is no known motive for the attack. The assailant was also unknown to the victim, who is now recovering at home. Michigan State Police are investigating the incident.

Proposal 3 is a citizen bill designed to radicalise Michigan’s abortion laws through an anything-goes, vague redefining of “reproductive freedom.”

Current Michigan law only allows abortion where the life of the mother is threatened, and before a heartbeat can be detected.

Activists behind Proposal 3’s suggested legislative changes are largely funded by a far-left wing organisation, the monolithic extremist group ACLU, upwards to the tune of USD $10,628,722.73.

Hamfisted Legislation

Citizens to Support MI Women and Children PAC are opposing Proposal 3, with the support of the Michigan Catholic Conference and Right to Life Michigan.

Explaining the perils of the bill, Great Lakes Justice Centre said in a brief:

“This radical proposal is not solely about abortion; rather, this poorly worded change to [Michigan’s] State Constitution will create additional new rights and invalidates numerous existing laws protecting women, children, and parents.”

The pro-termination of life in the womb proposal opens a veritable Pandora’s box, justified by activists as protecting ‘black minorities and the LGBT community.’

Proposal 3’s ‘contradicts existing laws,’ GLJC argued, making the proposed ‘poorly defined’ amendments bad law.

P3 gives a blank cheque to abortion, allowing for partial birth termination, and would legalise the murder of a baby in the womb ‘based on disability, at any time based upon a child’s disability, gender, race, or for any other reason.’

Among the 16 points provided by GLJC (PDF), Proposal 3 also:

  • ‘Allows a minor child to have an abortion without the knowledge or consent of the child’s parents.’
  • Violates parental rights in directing their children’s upbringing and education…’
  • ‘Creates a right for a minor child to procure a sex change via permanent and irreversible sterilization without the knowledge or consent of the child’s parents.’
  • ‘Allows school clinics to provide contraceptives to children without the knowledge or consent of the child’s parents.’
  • Potentially protects paedophiles, by ‘prohibiting enforcement of criminal statutes against statutory rape and child sexual abuse (MCL 750.520), female genital mutilation — e.g. sex between a 12-year-old girl and a 45-year-old man will now be protected by this new right, so long as the child “consents.”
  • Promotes the exploitation of women by ‘allowing for a forced abortion in potential contracts for surrogacy.

Proposal 3, GLJC concluded, is ‘extreme, undefined, broad, and vague.’

The bill would create a constitutional ‘super-right’ that would ‘inevitably collide’ with civil liberties such as freedom of speech, freedom of religion, informed consent, and freedom of conscience.

Forceful Measures

The attack preceded last Friday’s heavy-handed FBI raid and arrest of Mark Houck, after the Biden administration’s Department of Justice stormed the pro-life pastoral carer’s home, treated him like a terrorist, and took the father of seven at gunpoint.

Calling for justice, Live Action founder Lila Rose responded to the two incidents in a lengthy Twitter thread.

Rose rightly pointed out that the shooting was part of an alarming list of increased violence from far-left pro-abort activists, egged on by the Biden administration, post-Dodds v. Jackson, which saw the US Supreme Court repeal Roe v. Wade.

Rose stated:

“The past 12 weeks, we have seen acts of vandalism & violence toward churches & pro-life pregnancy resource centres. We have seen ZERO indictments or arrests from the DOJ. This bias in our justice system is a danger to our way of life & legitimacy of our institutions.”

“Every American must demand justice,” Rose asserted. “Justice for Mark Houck, facing political persecution from our government. Justice for the canvasser shot in Michigan. Justice for the more than 2,000 preborn children killed by abortion daily. Our nation must do better & we must demand it.”

The increase in violence follows Joe Biden’s so-called ‘rally for unity’ in early September, where the President encouraged the idea that “anyone not a Democrat, is to be viewed as a domestic terrorist.”

Is the Sexual Revolution Built on Lies? This Secular Feminist says ‘Yes’.

A feminist admits that the Sexual Revolution, far from liberating women, has reduced their safety and rights.

Laughter roared through the back of the truck.

Half my army platoon and I were riding in a Unimog on our way to a training exercise. And the conversation turned (as it often did) to sexual matters and sexual ‘conquests’. A fellow soldier asked me about my experience in this area.

I don’t believe in sex before marriage, I said.

The (young) men were gobsmacked: what 18-year-old male doesn’t have sex?? They were hard-pressed to contain their laughter as they shook their heads.

Such sexualised behaviour is the norm on this side of the sexual revolution (especially in a testosterone-heavy environment like the army). Casual sex, pornography, and all that goes with it (strip clubs etc.) are an accepted part of modern life. On this side of the revolution, we’re told, you should enjoy sex without restraint, without stigma. As if it’s just another bodily urge that needs satisfying.

And yet, there’s growing unease around this ‘liberated’ view of sex in some quarters of our secular world.

Questions are being raised about the impact of the sexual revolution on girls and women (as well as boys and men). The #MeToo movement has spotlighted the horrors of sexual abuse. And deeper concerns are now being raised about the sexual revolution itself — concerns that resonate with the Bible’s view of sex.

And British secular feminist Louise Perry is leading the charge.

In a recent essay on the Common Sense substack (hosted by former New York Times editor Bari Weiss), entitled ‘I’m 30. The sexual revolution shackled my generation‘, she writes:

I used to believe the liberal narrative on the sexual revolution.

As a younger woman, I held the same opinions as most other millennial urban graduates in the West. I conformed to the beliefs of my class. Of course freedom is the goal, I thought. What women need is the freedom to behave as men have always behaved, enjoying all the pleasures of casual sex, porn, BDSM, and indeed any other sexual delight that the human mind can dream up. As long as everyone is consenting, what’s the problem?

I no longer believe any of this.

I’m not a religious conservative. I’m a feminist, and I’ve spent my entire professional life working on the issue of male violence against women — first in a rape crisis center, and later as a journalist and a media relations director for a legal campaign against sexual violence.

It’s precisely because I’m a feminist that I’ve changed my mind on sexual liberalism.’ [1]

That’s not something you hear every day. She’s the first secular feminist I’ve heard who’s put it so bluntly.

But I’m guessing she’s not the only feminist changing her views about the sexual revolution. And so, it’s worth exploring her argument. Here it is:

1) The Sexual Revolution is built on a lie about men and women

Perry writes:

[The sexual revolution is] an ideology premised on the false belief that the physical and psychological differences between men and women are trivial, and that any restrictions placed on sexual behavior must therefore have been motivated by malice, stupidity or ignorance.

The problem is the differences aren’t trivial. Sexual asymmetry is profoundly important: One half of the population is smaller and weaker than the other half, making it much more vulnerable to violence. This half of the population also carries all of the risks associated with pregnancy.

It is also much less interested in enjoying all of the delights now on offer in the post-sexual revolution era.’

There is a big difference between men and women (on average). Women carry far more consequences of so-called ‘sexual liberation’ than men.

2) The Sexual Revolution has not freed women but reduced them to objects of men’s pleasure.

On this issue, Perry doesn’t hold back:

Remove the progressive goggles, and the history of the last 60 years looks different.

The sexual revolution isn’t only a story of women freed from the burdens of chastity and motherhood. It is also a story about the triumph of the playboy. The new sexual culture isn’t so much about the liberation of women, as so many feminists would have us believe, but the adaptation of women to the expectations of a familiar character: Don Juan, Casanova, or, more recently, Hugh Hefner.’

The pornification of culture has led to pornified expectations of women. What a surprise.

3) We need to bring back what the revolution has torn down

Most revolutions in human history have disastrous unintended consequences. Think of the French or Russian revolutions. And sadly, the Sexual Revolution is no different.

And according to Perry, there are important goods from pre-revolutionary times that need to be brought back:

We need to re-erect the social guard rails that have been torn down.

To do that, we have to start by stating the obvious: Sex must be taken seriously. Men and women are different. Some desires are bad. Consent is not enough. Violence is not love. Loveless sex is not empowering. People are not products. Marriage is good.’

How refreshing it is to hear this feminist’s voice!

A surprising alignment with the Bible’s concerns

Perry is no Christian, as she points out.

But her concerns are surprisingly aligned with the Bible’s sexual ethic. Sex must be taken seriously. It’s a good gift from our Maker, to be enjoyed only between a husband and a wife (Genesis 2, 1 Corinthians 7). When used according to God’s design, sex is incredibly good (which is why those in monogamous marriages — especially religious people — report a more satisfying sex life than those in the hookup culture).

And while life was by no means perfect pre-sexual revolution (there were other issues of misogyny, for example), it’s hard to ignore the devastating consequences for girls and women of a pornified culture.

(Of course, not everything she says aligns with the Bible (e.g. she is ok with pre-marital sex in some circumstances), and more could be said. But that’s the project of her new book, The Case Against The Sexual Revolution).

God’s reality breaks through eventually

But what I found most interesting was that God’s reality — God’s design — is breaking through in her analysis. You can only suppress reality for so long before you start reaping the consequences, especially in sex.

Just ask this thoughtful secular feminist.
