Elon Musk is Threatened with “Sanctions” at World Economic Forum

He must “Behave” and Stop Free Speech

BECKER NEWS

“The time of the Wild West is over,” the European Commission’s Vice-President for Values and Transparency Věra Jourová warned Elon Musk at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum.

Speaking with Euronews Next in Davos on Wednesday, Jourová said Twitter would face sanctions if it didn’t comply with the EU’s new online regulations.

Asked if the E.U. could force big platforms like Twitter to comply with the new online laws that aim to restrict speech and confine public opinion to state-approved narratives, she said that there was “nothing stronger than legislation in force.”

“We will have the Digital Services Act [DSA]. We will have the Code of Practice as a part of this legislation,” Jourová said.

“So, after Mr Musk took over Twitter with his ‘freedom of speech absolutism,’ we are the protectors of freedom of speech as well,” she claimed.

Jourová did not further clarify what she was talking about.

It isn’t the first time the E.U. has fired a warning shot at Elon Musk about allowing users to speak their minds freely on the digital platform.

Earlier in January, the European Commission warned Elon Musk that Twitter must do much more to protect users from “hate speech,” “misinformation” and other “harmful” content, or risk a fine and possibly even a ban under strict new EU content moderation rules.

Thierry Breton, the EU’s commissioner for digital policy, told Musk that the social media platform will have to significantly increase efforts to comply with the new rules, known as the Digital Services Act, which are set to take effect next year.

The two held a video call in January to discuss Twitter’s preparedness for the law, which will require tech companies to act as Thought Police on their platforms for content that the European governments find objectionable.

WEF: United States Will Soon Make Hate Speech Illegal, Says EU Commissioner

WEF: United States Will Soon Make Hate Speech Illegal, Says EU Commissioner

The United States will soon follow Europe in implementing laws against so-called hate speech, a top Eurocrat claimed at the World Economic Forum’s meeting in Davos.

The vice president for Values and Transparency for the European Commission, Věra Jourová predicted on Tuesday that hate speech laws will be imposed upon the American public, despite longstanding case law at the Supreme Court protecting such speech under the First Amendment.

“Illegal hate speech, which you will have soon also in the U.S. I think that we have a strong reason why we have this in the criminal law,” Jourová said.

The Czech politician, who previously served as the European Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality, made the comments during a WEF panel hosted by former CNN host Brian Stelter on “The Clear and Present Danger of Disinformation.” The choice of Stelter may perhaps be viewed by some as ironic given his own relationship with the truth.

The panel also featured New York Times chairman Arthur Gregg Sulzberger, Democratic Congressman Seth Moulton, and Internews CEO Jeanne Bourgault.

Representative Moulton seemingly agreed with the statement from the EU Commission VP, telling her: “I think in general the US has a lot to learn in terms of data regulation, internet regulation… You’re way ahead of us in that regard.”

However, the Democrat politician later clarified that he did not believe that American politicians were ready to forsake the fundamental aspects of freedom of speech.

The comments from Jourová come amid the backdrop of the ongoing dispute between the European Union and new Twitter boss Elon Musk over his publicly stated commitment to free speech, which has ruffled feathers in Brussels.

Indeed, Jourová herself commented on the matter to Euractiv on Tuesday, saying that the platform should partner with the EU on combatting hate speech and disinformation, saying: “We need the platforms to work with the language to identify such cases.”

She said that European Union laws surrounding online speech will be enforced, saying: “They apply to Twitter regardless of who owns it. Musk should not underestimate our efforts to make big platforms responsible.”

“Regulators are already closely monitoring compliance with the applicable data protection rules, and we will be able to enforce the Digital Services Act later this year as well,” Jourová added.

The Digital Services Act (DSA) which came into force in November greatly expanded the ability of Brussels to police so-called ‘hate speech’ and ‘disinformation’ through the addition of punishment mechanisms against internet platforms that fail to abide by the bloc’s rules.

Should companies like Twitter fail to comply with the DSA by February of 2024, the EU will be able to impose fines of up to six per cent of their global revenue and even possibly ban the platform altogether.

Twitter’s Brussels Office Is Dismantled

Twitter’s Brussels Office Is Dismantled

Twitter’s Brussels office dismantled

The move by Elon Musk to rid the online platform of “woke” ideologues has sparked EU concern over online content control. With Twitter dismantling its entire Brussels office, some EU officials claim the platform will no longer comply with their new rules on controlling online content.

FREEWEST MEDIA

The Brussels departures are part of a global trend, seen from India to France.

Twitter executives who had previously dealt with government officials have either left the organisation in recent weeks or have been laid off in what appears to be a major staff reorganisation.

The company thus no longer has the staff to ensure compliance with local laws designed to control online content. EU sources have warned that this could expose the company to legal and regulatory action.

“I am concerned about the news of Twitter firing so many staff in Europe,” Věra Jourová, EU vice-president in charge of the “disinformation code”, told the Financial Times.

“If you want to detect and take effective action against disinformation and propaganda, it requires resources.

“Especially in the context of the Russian disinformation war, I expect Twitter to fully respect EU law and honour its commitments. Twitter has been a very useful partner in the fight against disinformation and illegal hate speech and this must not change.”

Two individuals in charge of Twitter’s digital policy in Europe left the company last week, according to five people with knowledge of the departures. It is not clear whether the two had resigned or had been fired.

Musk issued an ultimatum last week for staff to commit to a “hardcore work culture”.

Twitter no longer EU tool

The two had been leading the company’s efforts to comply with the EU’s “disinformation code” and the Digital Services Act, which came into force just recently, dictating new rules on how large companies “must keep users safe online”, essentially banning all content that does not toe the EU line.

Other Twitter executives in the Brussels office, seen as a crucial instrument for European policymakers, left the company earlier this month during staff cuts which saw half of its 7,500 employees eliminated.

The lay-offs came in the wake of a broken promise by various leftwing and “woke” organizations not to harm the platform’s advertising revenue.

Musk explained on Tuesday that his initial plan to have a “content moderation council with widely diverse viewpoints” had been designed because “a large coalition of political/social activist groups agreed not to try to kill Twitter by starving us of advertising revenue if I agreed to this condition”. Sadly, “they broke the deal” by immediately organizing an advertiser boycott against him.

In response, Musk said that he would rather listen to the voice of the people. On the US holiday of Thanksgiving, he announced that a general amnesty for suspended Twitter users who had not “broken the law or engaged in egregious spam” would begin “next week”.

Musk had posted a poll the day before the holiday on this issue and over 3 million votes, 72.4 percent of users said “yes” while only 27.6 percent said “no”.

“The people have spoken,” Musk announced after the poll closed. “Amnesty begins next week. Vox Populi, Vox Dei.”

Last month, the ADL had threatened Musk with “dire consequences” if he allowed back “dangerous individuals” like Donald Trump, Alex Jones, Nick Fuentes, Steve Bannon, Andrew Tate and David Duke.

EU Commissioner Claims Bloc NEVER Pushed People to Get COVID Vaccine [VIDEOS]

ER Editor: Another incredible moment in EU Clown World. Here is the Youtube video of this short exchange between MEP Cristian Terhes and EU Commissioner Jourova, put out on Terhes’ Youtube channel.

Terhes nails Jourova on a few key issues —

Here is a video of Terhes’ daily fight to gain entry to the EU Parliament building without a Covid vaccine pass last November:

EU Commissioner Claims Bloc NEVER Pushed People to Get COVID Vaccine

SAVE BRITAIN

Senior EU officials’ assertion that COVID was never forced upon individuals has been met with scepticism from detractors.

On Tuesday, a senior EU official shocked observers when she asserted that the bloc had never required its citizens to receive a COVID-19 vaccination in order for them to have access to public services and that claims to the contrary had primarily been made by what she called “anti-vaccine activists.”

It happens as the EU gets ready to update its transnational COVID-19 passport system – a tool that allows EU member states to lock down their own people and shows whether or not a bearer is vaccinated and/or boostered against the disease.

Vera Jourová, the EU’s commissioner for “Values and Transparency,” asserted during a meeting of the bloc’s Special Committee on COVID-19 Pandemic that the organisation had never even considered pressuring people to get vaccines, despite the planned renewal of the EU’s COVID passes and the bloc’s prior public interest in implementing a union-wide regime of mandatory vaccination.

The commissioner told the committee that the EU has never even “considered or even set in stone in any regulation or… requirement to get vaccined,” adding that “We were never pressuring the population to acquire the vaccinated as a condition for access to public services or health services.”

Jourová, on the other hand, claimed that those who made the contrary assertion that “if you are not vaccinated you will not get… to the public areas or [get] access to the services (sic)” were primarily “anti-vaccine activists.”

While Jourová seemed rather certain of her assertion, others did not share her confidence. In particular, elected representative Cristian Terhes MEP questioned whether the commissioner was genuinely being “serious” when she made her claim.

“Madame Commissioner I have to tell you — and please look at me — Madame Commissioner, are you serious with what you just said right now?”, posed the politician from Romania.

“…we are talking about the fundamental rights of every EU citizen, and we just heard right now that through this green certificate people were not forced to be vaccinated,” he continued. ”Are we guys serious? Can we look people in the eyes, citizens of the European Union telling them that?”

Terhes went on to say that, during periods of lockdown, he had to regularly “fight” with EU security to even get access to the European parliament without a COVID pass, a claim that appears to directly contradict the spirit of the commissioner’s statements. (ER: see video above)
