Twitter Files: Censor-Happy Executives Used Tools to Suppress Breitbart News

Twitter Files: Censor-Happy Executives Used Tools to Suppress Breitbart News

The latest installment of the Twitter Files reveals that the censorship-loving leftists running the show before Elon Musk took over the platform used tech tools to suppress content posted by Breitbart News after adding a “bot” to the official Breitbart News Twitter account. As journalist Matt Taibbi explains, “The bot ends up becoming an automated tool invisibly watching both Trump and, apparently, Breitbart.”

Part three of the Twitter Files, released through journalist Matt Taibbi on Friday night, focused on the company’s unprecedented decision to blacklist former President Donald Trump’s account on January 8, 2021.

The first installment of the Twitter Files on Trump’s suspension, which is set to be followed up by two additional installments, focused on Twitter’s censorship tactics in the months leading up to January 6, 2021.

As Breitbart News reported:

In his Twitter thread, Taibbi pointed out that the “intellectual framework” for banning Trump’s account was already laid out before January 6, which suggests that the Capitol Riots were simply their excuse for finally doing what they had always wanted to do.

Taibbi revealed that, as part of its “vast range of visible and invisible tools to rein in Trump’s engagement,” Twitter moderators added a “bot” to a Breitbart News video that Trump tweeted out that showed him speaking about the need to “root out” alleged voter fraud.

As Taibbi reported:

In Twitter docs execs frequently refer to “bots,” e.g. “let’s put a bot on that.” A bot is just any automated heuristic moderation rule. It can be anything: every time a person in Brazil uses “green” and “blob” in the same sentence, action might be taken.

Aside from adding the suppression tool to Trump’s tweet, Twitter reportedly added a “bot” for Breitbart News.

“In this instance, it appears moderators added a bot for a Trump claim made on Breitbart. The bot ends up becoming an automated tool invisibly watching both Trump and, apparently, Breitbart (‘will add media ID to bot’). Trump by J6 was quickly covered in bots,” Taibbi tweeted along with a screenshot of internal communications from Twitter staff about Trump’s post.

“Hey team, gonna add a Fraud Claim label to this. Claim of fraud at about 40 secs of video,” an unknown Twitter employee wrote along with a link to Trump’s tweet in question.

“Yep,” Twitter’s former Trust and Safety head Yoel Roth replied, seemingly approving the decision to suppress Trump’s tweet.

Another unknown Twitter employee then announced that they would “also add media id to bot.”

Democrat Vicente Gonzalez Confirms Closure of Bank of China Account Following Breitbart News Report

Democrat Vicente Gonzalez Confirms Closure of Bank of China Account Following Breitbart News Report

Democrat Rep. Vicente Gonzalez’s office confirmed the closure of an account with the Bank of China, a state-owned bank run by the Chinese Communist Party, following questions from a Breitbart News report last year.

Financial disclosure statements filed with the clerk of the House of Representatives showed that Gonzalez closed the accounts sometime after Breitbart News’s Matthew Boyle uncovered bank statements revealing the account.

Typically, the statements are due annually on May 15. However, Gonzalez filed a 90-day extension in March, allowing him to file up until August 13 — which he filed and was accepted by the clerk on August 12, according to documents reviewed by Breitbart News.

When asked by Breitbart News, the congressman’s press secretary James Rivera confirmed in an email that the account was closed in 2020. Rivera did not give any additional statement about the account’s closure when asked by Breitbart News.

However, the closure indicated the congressman actually followed through on what he said he would do after the in-depth report by Breitbart News and after he rejected an interview with Breitbart News and other outlets at the time.

In March 2021, Breitbart News exclusively reported that the congressman’s previous statements showed holdings in the Bank of China — which fully acknowledges itself to be a “wholly state-owned commercial bank” and has been since the mid-1990s — of between $100,001 and $250,000. The statements also revealed that he was earning interest from the bank totaling between $2,501 and $5,000 each year.

Nonetheless, not only did the funds held in the Bank of China raise questions, but the amount of interest the congressman was receiving at the time also did. Gonzalez reportedly held between $250,001 and $500,000 in at least two other banks. He received no interest from one and only collected between $201 and $1,000 in interest from the other.

At the time, Gonzalez’s refusal to grant an interview to Breitbart News after multiple requests raised many questions about the congressman among his constituents.

Following reports of the congressman holding money in the Chinese “state-owned commercial bank,” Gonzalez said he closed his accounts. News 4 San Antonio reported, “[Gonzalez’s] press secretary, Jason Johnson, told News 4 San Antonio that the Bank of China is insured and operating under U.S. laws” and stated that the “congressman has closed that account.” However, this is the first time Gonzalez’s office has confirmed this to Breitbart News.

Additionally, in June 2021, Breitbart News unearthed newspaper reports and court documents from the early 2000s showing Gonzalez allegedly made “demeaning statements” about the local police that reportedly started a brawl with a municipal court judge and the then-mayor of Donna, Texas.

Despite the well-documented court filings and newspaper articles, Johnson told Breitbart News that “this is completely false” and would not specify further what he was describing as “false.”

Gonzalez also voted in March to “defund the police.” The congressman voted to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2021 with other House Democrats on an almost party-line vote of 220-212. Republicans described the act as a plan that would engage in “defunding the police.”

The Congressional Budget Office’s (CBO) nonpartisan analysis of the bill found it would hurt more than 18,000 police departments around the country. “More than 18,000 law enforcement agencies nationwide would be affected by the bill’s requirements,” the CBO said in a letter to top congressional Republicans on the matter.

Watch: Breitbart Editor Matthew Boyle at Turning Point USA Summit: ‘We Are Winning the War’

Breitbart News Washington Political Editor Matthew Boyle addressed thousands of students at Turning Point USA’s annual Student Action Summit in Tampa, Florida, on Sunday, where he told attendees “We are winning the war” while on a panel, titled, “The Rise of the New Media Class.”

“What Andrew Breitbart laid out for us over a decade ago was the problems with the establishment media, but more importantly than that, how do we beat them, and how do we change the game and fix this, and build a new media,” Boyle said on the panel, alongside RedState editor Brandon Morse and Townhall senior writer Julio Rosas.

“I’m here to tell you guys we are winning the war,” Boyle added, before sharing a few statistics.

“These come from Facebook,” Boyle said, sourcing the statistics. “These are data that lay out the total number of interactions over the course of the last year. July 2021 to July 2022.”

“Politico had 8.26 million interactions over the course of the last year. Respectable, but not that great. The Los Angeles Times: 10.37 million. The Washington Post: 46.66 million. And the New York Times had 83.45 million,” he said.

“Breitbart: we beat them all combined,” Boyle revealed. “We had 172.78 million interactions across Facebook in the last year combined.”

“We are winning this war,” the Breitbart Washington editor added, elicited a response of applause from the audience.

Boyle went on to explain that Breitbart News, as a newer media company, has been able to “step up and start beating these establishment media guys, to the point where those statistics show we’re crushing them all combined” because Breitbart News is “ahead of the curve.”

“We chase down stories that the rest of the establishment media are just not interested in,” Boyle said. “We’ll chase down stories that the rest of the media is just totally ignoring.”

Emma-Jo Morris on Being a Conservative in a Liberal City: You ‘Forge Your Own Path,’ Liberals ‘Don’t Have That Muscle’

Emma-Jo Morris on Being a Conservative in a Liberal City: You ‘Forge Your Own Path,’ Liberals ‘Don’t Have That Muscle’

Breitbart News political editor Emma-Jo Morris joined a panel discussion on Friday at Turning Point USA’s Young Women’s Leadership Summit in Dallas, Texas, where she, Post Millennial editor-in-chief Libby Emmons, and New York Post columnist Karol Markowicz talked about being a conservative in a liberal city.

“You become hardened in a certain way, and you get used to having to forge your own path in ways that people who fit in more, politically, in their greater society don’t have that muscle,” Morris said.

Watch Below:

“Andrew Breitbart was always a huge influence for me, and a huge inspiration to me, and he had a really important quote that has lived on for years since he’s died, which is, ‘Walk toward the fire,’” she added. “And as people watch you do that, and as people see that, and agree with you, they’ll start to see that they can do it, too.”

In discussing how to deal with people who agree with conservative ideas but are too afraid to admit it, Morris said she agrees that “there’s not so much patience for the people who are all worried” about facing backlash, but to keep in mind that “people come around in their own time, and they realize as they see people like us — they can do it, too. But there’s a lag.”

“I also think it’s important to engage those people,” Morris said, elaborating:

I have a friend who’s progressive — she thinks — and we were talking about the trans sports stuff, and she was saying, “I kind of agree with you, but sometimes I bring this up with my other friends who are progressive, and I feel extremely judged, and I feel like they’re not going to want to engage with me, and maybe not even going to want to be my friend.”

So I said, “What do they find outrageous about what you think?” and when you sit with them, and take time to really unpack what their beliefs are, and they realize themselves that this isn’t hateful, this isn’t coming from a malicious place — they start to feel to feel more comfortable — after having worked it out with somebody who’s safe, to articulate themselves better to the people around them.

“So it’s kind of like you have to try and hold their hand a little bit,” Morris said. “There’s something to be said for being patient and being supportive.”

“The same way we want these people to be supportive of us is to be supportive of them on their path of understanding the world around them, which is extremely complicated, as we all know,” Morris added.

Biden’s ‘Minister of Truth’ Nina Jankowicz Called for Facebook to Censor Breitbart

Biden’s ‘Minister of Truth’ Nina Jankowicz Called for Facebook to Censor Breitbart

Nina Jankowicz, the chair of the new Disinformation Governance Board in the Department of Homeland Security, wanted Facebook to censor Breitbart News, joining the left’s calls for Silicon Valley to censor conservative news outlets in 2019.

Jankowicz, 33, whose past statements (and songs) came under scrutiny after her new job became widely known this week, once promoted the “Russia collusion” conspiracy theory, and denied in 2020 that Hunter Biden’s laptop was authentic.

She has also called for increased regulation of free speech on social media, calling Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s speech  at Georgetown University on free expression “unfortunate,” and protested against the inclusion of Breitbart on the platform:

Left-wing groups have pushed for boycotts of Breitbart News since Donald Trump was elected in 2016, and efforts to silence independent conservative outlets continue in Congress, notably in the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act (JCPA).

Jancowicz also suggested that Breitbart News repeated “Russian state-sponsored media” in her 2020 book, How to Lose the Information War: Russia, Fake News, and the Future of Conflict. She provided no evidence in the book for her claim.

Watch – The Babylon Bee Interviews Breitbart Editor-in-Chief Alex Marlow

Breitbart News Editor-in-Chief Alex Marlow recently appeared on The Babylon Bee podcast where he discussed a range of topics, from Big Tech’s censoring of conservative outlets to China’s influence on the corporate media.

Speaking with hosts Adam Yenser and Kyle Mann, the discussion first centered on Twitter’s censorship of The Babylon Bee before segueing into the “top five worst purveyors of fake news.” Alex singled out NPR when recalling the Hunter Biden laptop story and the broader media’s treatment of Breitbart political editor Emma Jo-Morris.

“Whoever is the next Republican president, day one, you have to defund NPR, you have to defund PBS.” said Alex. “I know they get so much of their money from donations, but make the statement. Make the statement that we’re not going to government-fund fake news like we’re some sort of third-world country.”

“The fact that they were the worst on that story is very telling,” he added.

On the broader subject of fake news, Alex reiterated arguments laid out in his book Breaking the News by characterizing the establishment media less as an ideologically motivated cabal and more as a collection of self-interested conglomerates pushing false narratives to protect their bottom lines, such as the benefits of unfettered free trade with China.

“Is Disney just Disney or is Disney part of ABC Disney with ABC News,” he said. “ABC News has a parent company that has theme parks and resorts in China. So, do you think China, which gives permission for all these theme parks to exist, you think they’re going to be very kind to ABC if ABC is really investigating the origin of the pandemic? Of course not.”

Later in the interview, Alex discussed how fact-checking outlets give a virtual pass to more left-leaning outlets while crushing conservative outlets with “False” ratings by playing with semantics.

“It’s called harassment,” Alex told the hosts.

“CNN knows a lot about harassment,” Adam interjected.

“But that’s what they’re here to do!” Alex said. “They’re here to make our lives difficult. They’re not here to actually bring integrity to the American news landscape. They start with a premise: ‘Find a way to reveal that Breitbart is wrong … Find a way to have a brick thrown through your window, so that you waste your time. That’s their goal.”

On a more light-hearted note, later in the program, Alex squared off in a battle-of-wits with Babylon Bee editor-in-chief Kyle Mann as the two guessed whether or not certain outlandish headlines were true or false.

Spoiler: Alex won.

Rep. Dr. Ronny Jackson: Joe Biden ‘Needs to Resign,’ ‘Not Cognitively Capable of Leading’

Rep. Dr. Ronny Jackson (R-TX), who served as White House physician during the Obama and Trump administrations, is calling for President Joe Biden to resign, noting he is “not cognitively capable of leading.”

“Biden doesn’t know what’s going on with Ukraine. He doesn’t know what’s going on with ANYTHING!” Jackson tweeted Friday. “He’s not cognitively capable of leading. He needs to RESIGN before our country suffers any more.”

On February 8, Jackson, who has been calling for Biden to undergo a cognitive assessment since last year, penned a letter to Biden demanding he take a cognitive test over fears that he may have Alzheimer’s Disease, Breitbart News reported. The letter was signed by 37 of his fellow Republican lawmakers.

The next day, Jackson appeared on Fox Business Network’s Varney & Company and reaffirmed his stance that Biden is mentally unfit to serve as President…

Exclusive: Despite Facebook Bias, Breitbart News Destroys Establishment Media on Platform

Exclusive: Despite Facebook Bias, Breitbart News Destroys Establishment Media on Platform

Despite the presence of a range of leftist “fact-checkers” with the power to suppress posts on the platform and open censorship of conservative news stories by Facebook, Breitbart News is demolishing its establishment foes on Facebook.

Facebook has an established track record of censoring conservative media. It censored the New York Post twice, first for the Hunter Biden laptop story and then for a negative story about a Black Lives Matter co-founder. It censored Tucker Carlson’s page, reducing the Fox News host’s reach on the platform little more than a month before the 2020 election. It censored the Wall Street Journal over an op-ed on coronavirus.

And it censored Breitbart News — for a live video of a press conference.

Despite this demonstrable bias, over the last three months, the official Breitbart News page on Facebook generated nearly 40 million interactions — more than the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, and HuffPo combined.

Breitbart News’ interaction rate of 39.9 million towers over far-left competitors like Vox, which totaled fewer than one million in the same period.

The rankings of some third-party analytics services, like NewsWhip, sometimes give Breitbart News a lower ranking than the above, due to the fact that it does not include native videos and photos in its calculations, an area where Breitbart outperforms its competitors.

Although Facebook has included Breitbart News in a 200-strong list of approved media outlets (most of which are establishment or left-leaning), Breitbart still faces an uneven playing field on the platform due to the presence of multiple left-leaning third-party “fact-checkers” that have the power to suppress publishers.

These “fact-checkers” include direct competitors of Breitbart News like USA Today, which suppressed a Breitbart News post on Facebook-owned Instagram in June 2020. These fact-checkers often decline to target posts from Breitbart’s competitors — for example, when HuffPo published disinformation about President Donald Trump profiting from a drug company’s coronavirus treatment, it was not fact-checked at all — not even with an “additional context” fact-check, the least severe kind.

Despite this advantage, HuffPo’s engagement fails to come anywhere near Breitbart News. Far-left media is failing on Facebook despite the advantage of biased fact-checkers (even Facebook VP Nick Clegg admits that fact-checkers pursue their own political agenda).

As to how much worse the establishment, left-wing media would be faring on Facebook if so many prominent conservatives had not been banned from the platform — we can only guess.
