Germany braces for huge transportation strike

ER Editor: And a sidenote – a ‘climate referendum’ held yesterday in Berlin failed to pass.

See Berlin “climate” referendum failed due to the necessary quorum – “climate neutrality” after all only in 2045. (Browsers will translate) In another Deutsche RT piece, Berlin referendum on “climate neutrality”: who is behind it?, we find Americans and other groups making large donations to this event. This all sounds similar to the 15-minute city nonsense, which Berliners haven’t bought into:

On Sunday, Berliners can vote on whether they want to live “climate-neutral” in 2030. How exactly this is supposed to work and what consequences this will have is not clear to most. According to a report by Die Welt on Saturday, many Berliners are threatened  with a “potential rent increase of three euros per square meter, due to planned building renovations”.

In addition, there are private driving bans in the inner city. The implementation of the questionable measures is estimated at 112 billion euros. A total of 1.2 million euros in donations were collected for the campaign. Of this, around 150,000 euros came from three crowdfunding campaigns run by the Hertie Foundation, Startnext and Betterplace. The Internet search engine Ecosia donated 20,000 euros. The remaining funds from private individuals and foundations account for two-thirds of the budget, totaling 820,000 euros.

The largest single donation came from the German-American investor couple Albert Wenger and Susan Danziger from New YorkThe two have lived in the USA since studying at Harvard University. In the “Big Apple” they have built up a large fortune through “venture capital deals” over the years.

Both privately and through “Wenger Danziger GmbH” and their family foundation “Eutopia”, they are supporting the referendum with a total of 425,000 euros. Critics like the authors of the Welt article take a critical view of this:

“It has a strange taste that an American foundation not only participates financially in German politics, but also donates such a large sum.”

Today there is supposed to be the biggest strike in 30 years across Germany.  A recent tweet:

Germany braces for biggest strike in decades – Bild

The country is set to be “paralyzed” on Monday as public transport workers will reportedly protest for wage increases

RT

Public transportation throughout Germany will come to a halt on Monday, potentially leaving the 83-million-strong nation in a state of “traffic chaos,” the Bild warned on Sunday. What is being called the largest nationwide strike in decades was organized by several powerful trade unions.

All long-distance train service of the German national railway operator, Deutsche Bahn, will be completely halted because of the strike, the company said. Regional train service will be drastically reduced, while short-distance city trains, known in Germany as the S-Bahn, will also not be in operation, it added.

In seven German states – Baden-Wuerttemberg, Hesse, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Saxony, Rhineland-Palatinate, and parts of Bavaria – local transport workers will join the strike as well, meaning that all bus, train and tram traffic will likely be brought to a standstill, Germany’s Stern magazine reported.

The country’s airport association, ADV, already estimated that some 380,000 travelers will be unable to fly on Monday because of the strike. This comes ahead of the Easter holidays in Germany, which start on Monday in Lower Saxony and the city of Bremen.

Stern warned of “traffic chaos” on highways, while Bild called the planned work stoppage “the worst strike in 31 years,” adding that Germany last experienced something similar back in 1992. Stern also described it as a “declaration of war on … the country’s infrastructure providers.”

The strike is the result of demands for wage hikes issued by several major trade unions. The public services union, Verdi, seeks a pay rise of 10.5%, but no less than €500 for some 2.5 million public employees. The railway and transport union (EVG) demands a 12% wage increase but no less than €650. The unions blame inflation and rising commodity prices for the crisis.

“sufficiently high” minimum wage is required for employees with low to middle incomes to successfully weather the effects of price hikes, the head of Verdi, Frank Werneke, told Bild. “They are hit hardest by inflation. Everyone has to fill the fridge. Food prices have risen sharply, as have electricity and gas,” he argued.

Germany, along with other EU states, encountered economic difficulties last year as the bloc embarked on a gradual reduction of its reliance on Russian energy supplies. Although the EU did not ban Russian pipeline gas imports, flows dwindled significantly due to Ukraine-related sanctions and the sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipeline. Earlier in March, the Ifo Institute for Economic Research warned that Germany could face a recession in 2023.

France slammed for ‘excessive force’ against protestors

France slammed for ‘excessive force’ against protestors

ER Editor: See this tweet from journalist Freddie Ponton, who sums it up nicely about the EU’s ‘progressive liberals’. A Belgian MP makes an impressive denunciation of the state-sanctioned violence in France:

Floating around on social media is the suspicion that not only are black blocs amping up the violence at these protests, but that some of them may be cops in disguise.

RT France picked up the story below (browsers will translate) concerning the denunciation by the European Council’s Commissioner for Human Rights, as well as this one where Amnesty International reminds the French govt that, under international law, it is not a crime to take part in a spontaneous, undeclared / unregistered demonstration. A reminder to France’s Minister of the Interior, Gerald Darmanin, who had said the contrary:

In this regard, the NGO deplores the fact that in France, the organizers of a demonstration must request authorization from the authorities between three and 15 days in advance and that if they do not comply with this obligation, they risk imprisonment or a fine. “It’s CONTRARY to international law,” protests Amnesty. “Peaceful protesters participating in undeclared gatherings are not committing any crime. They cannot therefore be arrested, contrary to what Gérald Darmanin declares. This point was recalled by the Court of Cassation in June 2022” …

Aside from the fact that we now know our countries are literally under a fascist system, run by elites who own the finance, pharma &etc. outfits, France is a pretty fascist-type place in the loose sense of the word.

Check out this short compilation of police violence in the tweeted video below:

France slammed for ‘excessive force’ against protests

The violence must stop, said the Council of Europe’s human rights commissioner

RT

The French government has used disproportionate force against demonstrators protesting the pension reform, in violation of their freedom of assembly and expression, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Dunja Mijatovic said on Friday. (ER: see her two twitter accounts here and here)

Mijatovic described the circumstances of the pension protests as “concerning,” adding that “sporadic acts of violence by some demonstrators or other reprehensible acts committed by others during a demonstration cannot justify the excessive use of force by state agents.”

.

While some “violent incidents” have taken place, including against police, they are “not sufficient to deprive peaceful demonstrators from enjoying the right of freedom of assembly,” she said, adding that the French authorities have an obligation to protect peaceful protesters and journalists from both police violence and fringe demonstrators.

“While a state may have the authority to use force, in particular to restore order, such use must only take place as a last resort and in strict compliance with the conditions of necessity and proportionality,” said the commissioner. “Violence, wherever it comes from, can in no way be used as a means of resolving a social and/or political crisis.”

Mijatovic called on President Emmanuel Macron’s government to abide by the Commission’s recommendations from 2019, pertaining to the ‘Yellow Vests’ protests, as well as those issued by the French human rights commission earlier this week.

France’s National Consultative Commission on Human Rights (CNCDH) said on Thursday that during the week-long protests, police had “kettled” peaceful demonstrators and summarily arrested them without cause. The fact that only nine of the 292 people arrested in Paris on March 16 were charged with any offenses suggests “excessive use of police custody” as a way of chilling legitimate protests, the CNCDH said.

Protests against pension reform drew more than a million people across France on Thursday. Bypassing the legislature, Macron had used executive privilege to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64. Though trade unions and opposition parties denounced the measure, Macron has refused to budge.

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Friday morning that almost 450 police officers and gendarmes had been injured and that rioters lit over 900 fires on the streets. He blamed “extreme left” groups and “black bloc” anarchists for the violence. (ER: See our introductory observation.)

Macron (Barely) Survives ‘No Confidence’ Vote Amid French Pension Reform Protests

Macron (Barely) Survives ‘No Confidence’ Vote Amid French Pension Reform Protests

ER Editor: RT and Zerohedge reports. A reminder that instead of putting his much-hated pension reform to a vote, Macron invoked article 49.3 thus giving him constitutional power to pass the reform anyway. Outrage ensued, and a no-confidence vote occurred yesterday, to fail by lacking just 9 votes. Names of politicians who didn’t vote for the ‘motion to censure’ (no-confidence vote) have been circulated (see image below), and some have been threatened or had their property or offices attacked. Such is the level of feeling about this.

The idea is now circulating on social media that a president can’t surely survive by hanging on with just 9 votes.

As per usual, police violence in the streets has been showcased on Twitter. There are several very bad things about France, and this is one of them.

At least some of the trending Twitter hashtags on this matter are unavailable at the time of publication. Curious. See #MotionDeCensureTransPartisane #Revolution #greve20mars #blocage #DirectAN

To assume that France is blowing up because of a mere 2 years being added to the retirement age is simply wrong. It’s the straw and the camel’s back.

On the subject of police violence, here is a tweet by respected politician, Francois Asselineau:

Translation: THE ANGUISH OF A CS (riot police) COMMANDER

⚠️The MPs who refused the censure will be responsible for the deaths.

Everywhere, the same anger. And the feeling that it has only just begun.

French protests rage after vote on pension reform (VIDEOS)

Violent unrest has continued across the country after lawmakers failed to depose the government over the debated bill

RT

The French government has survived two parliamentary no-confidence votes over President Emmanuel Macron’s decision to push through a controversial pension reform bill without lawmakers’ approval. The failed motions on Monday were followed by renewed violent unrest overnight.

The first no-confidence motion, tabled by a small group of opposition lawmakers, garnered significant support in the National Assembly, dominated by Macron’s centrist alliance. The motion fell just nine votes short of the 287 required to pass. The second motion, put forward by the right-wing National Rally party, was backed by only 94 lawmakers. (ER: Rassemblement National or National Rally, Marine Le Pen’s party, only gets vilification and feigned outrage from other politicians so this was predictable.)

Despite failing to pass the motions, some opposition lawmakers urged the government to resign anyway.“The government is already dead in the eyes of the French,” left-wing MP Mathilde Panot said after the votes. “It doesn’t have any legitimacy anymore.”

In wake of the no-confidence votes, France’s top police trade union, the SGP Police FO, warned that officers might no be able to contain the ongoing unrest. “We’re starting to run out of steam on the police side,” the union said, bemoaning the so-called “punch actions” by protesters, such as suddenly blocking roads and causing other disruptions.

Translation: The Unité SGP Police FO union is concerned about the “fist actions” (sudden actions) that are multiplying in the country after the 49.3 “The demonstrators are ultra-mobile, moving quickly. They are running around. And we start to …

The protests apparently lived up to expectations, with assorted chaotic footage emerging overnight. Multiple videos from the French capital city of Paris show barricades erected in the streets, with various objects set on fire.

Translation: Paris is still burning, several wild corteges are in progress in the capital.

The police were pictured repeatedly charging the crowds, beating individual protesters, apparently without attempting to detain them.

Translation; Paris, serial charging and bludgeoning by the BRAV-M (special police) in a wild procession around Châtelet.

The unrest is expected to continue across France into the coming days, with trade unions calling for a “maximum mobilization” and a “general strike” expected to kick off as soon as Tuesday.

Macron opted last week to push through the long-debated bill, raising the retirement age in France from 62 to 64, without parliament’s approval. The move only further fueled ongoing strife across France, with violent protests raging for weeks as trade unions voiced their opposition to the proposed measure.

The bill, however, is still pending a review by the Constitutional Council before it can be signed into law. While the body has powers to dismiss certain articles within a bill, should it deem them to be unconstitutional, the council rarely actually does so.

Macron (Barely) Survives ‘No Confidence’ Vote Amid French Pension Reform Protests

Tyler Durden's Photo TYLER DURDEN

Update (1400ET): French President Emmanuel Macron’s government narrowly survived a no-confidence vote in the National Assembly on Monday, fending off an effort to kill his contentious pension overhaul and topple his administration.

As The Wall Street Journal reports, the no-confidence motion spearheaded by a group of centrists won the support of 278 lawmakers in the lower house of parliament, a mere nine votes short of a majority.

Lawmakers are expected to vote later Monday on a second no-confidence motion filed by Marine Le Pen’s National Rally.

That measure is unlikely to pass because conservative and left-leaning lawmakers have said they won’t back a no-confidence motion put forward by the far-right party.

As Remix News’ John Cody detailed earlier, after French President Emmanuel Macron pushed through pension reform without a vote in parliament, the backlash has been fierce, and there is now a good chance that a no-confidence vote this week could collapse his government. Even if he survives the vote, commentators say that Marine Le Pen has never been in a better position, with the conservative populist emerging as the “victor” in the fierce debate over pension reform. (ER: We can ASSURE readers that Marine Le Pen is just another sell-out and offers nothing different to the French.)

Macron’s decision to turn to Article 49.3 of the French constitution, which allows him to bypass parliament and increase the retirement age from 62 to 64 via decree, had been labeled the “nuclear option” by the French press.

However, within the article is a clause that a vote of no-confidence can be tabled within 24 hours after Article 49.3 is used, and if it succeeds, it would mean the end of Macron’s government.

Spontaneous riots have already erupted across the country, resulting in over 258 arrests in Paris alone, but the press and political analysts are warning that worse unrest is on the horizon.

Hundreds of thousands have been driven onto the streets in recent weeks in defiance of Macron’s pension reform, and polling consistently shows approximately 75 percent of the French public rejects raising the retirement age.

These protests could help fuel the drive for a no-confidence vote, with Le Pen quickly announcing she would pursue a vote of no confidence immediately after Macron rammed through the pension reform. So far, Le Len’s National Rally and the left-wing France Unbowed have blocked each other when it came to attempts to remove French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, who remains a close ally of Macron.

However, the Liberal MP Charles de Courson could introduce it and thus act as a bridge between the right and the left. The Liberals, acting as a neutral intermediary, could allow the right and the left to vote for their motion.  It has also been announced that the Liberties, Independents, Overseas and Territories (LIOT Group) is expected to table a no-confidence motion at 2:00 p.m. today as well.

Although the different factions of parliament have remained divided up until now, Macron’s dubious move to ram through pension reform without a democratic vote could finally unify the opposition.

The stakes are extremely high for Macron. He has labeled his move the “mother of all reforms” and wants to make the reform one of the crowning achievements of his rule. Regardless of whether he stays in power or not, the idea of “democracy” in France has become a farce, and tensions are only expected to mount in the coming weeks and perhaps coming years as well.

Le Pen says she will reverse the pension reform if she is elected president. Experts say her party stands to gain the most from Macron’s move, and she has succeeded in expanding her party’s electorate from the working-class base to the middle-class.

“It is precisely the employees who are angry about Macron’s reform,” said pollster Frédéric Dabi to Germany’s Welt.

Le Pen is also considered the best placed to capitalize among the various right-leaning and conservative parties in France.

“Le Pen is successfully continuing the process of normalization that it began years ago and continues to reap the rewards,” says right-wing extremism expert Jean-Yves Camus. “There are no more taboos when it comes to Marine Le Pen’s victory. We now have to consider this as a serious hypothesis.”

ICC Issues Arrest Warrant for Putin, Ignores Deep State Criminality

ER Editor: OK, somebody 25 levels above the rest of us is having a really good laugh at the ICC’s expense. This story was also picked up by RT and Real Raw News, and handled very differently by both. RT – Kremlin dismisses ‘outrageous’ ICC claims. And RRN – Putin Laughs at International Arrest Warrant. Of note from the RRN piece:

Zakharov said the ICC, located in the Hague, Netherlands, is a nebulous, intergovernmental coalition of Deep State gangsters that takes orders from the criminal Biden regime and other Western Leaders. Putin, he added, expected false charges would be leveled against him. However, he hardly anticipated they’d accuse him of kidnapping Ukrainian children while over 10,000 Russian children are still missing and presumed to have been sold into child slavery or to Adrenochrome harvesting facilities in Ukraine.

Zakharov said Russian Spetznas are still valiantly hunting down Adrenochrome farms in hopes of rescuing the children and destroying all traces of a pharmaceutical concoction that Putin has called “the devil’s elixir.”

As yet, we don’t have concrete evidence of the adrenochrome production facilities in Ukraine, although the rumour mill is going full speed in certain quarters.

Kudos also to Peter Halligan below for picking up the stuff the International Criminal Court SHOULD be treating seriously, such as the complaint lodged by Hannah Rose law firm against key players in the plandemic.

International Criminal Court issues arrest warrant against Putin – silent on the deaths of millions from C19 mRNA injections, Gain of Function research by the US and child trafficking via Mexico

From here:

ICC issues arrest warrant for Putin over alleged scheme to deport Ukrainian kids to Russia | Just The News

“The International Criminal Court said Friday it has issued an arrest warrant for Russia President Vladimir Putin over an alleged scheme to forcibly deport thousands of Ukrainian children to Russia.

The warrant also names Maria Lvova-Belova, the Russian official at the centre of the alleged scheme, according to CNN.”

No doubt the ICC Is acting on this report from Yale University researchers in a collaboration with the U.S. State Department:

Russia’s Systematic Program for the Re-education and Adoption of Ukraine’s Children | Conflict Observatory

“Russia’s federal government has systematically relocated at least 6,000 children from Ukraine to a network of re-education and adoption facilities in Russia-occupied Crimea and mainland Russia. The Yale School of Public Health’s Humanitarian Research Lab (HRL) identified 43 facilities involved in holding children from Ukraine since Russia’s 24 February 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The majority are recreational camps where children are taken for ostensible vacations, while others are facilities used to house children put up for foster care or adoption in Russia. These findings indicate the majority of camps have engaged in pro-Russia re-education efforts and some camps have provided military training to children or suspended the children’s return to their parents in Ukraine.”

Let’s hope this is not a woke university, a woke State Department and a woke ICC ignoring the child trafficking at the southern border of the US to single out Russia for “war crimes” that have their equivalence in “civil crimes”.

One can’t help but wonder why there has been no update on this case laid before the ICC 15 months ago (6 December 2021):

UK ICC Complaint – Hannah Rose Law

“Based on the extensive claims and enclosed documentation, we charge those responsible for numerous violations of the Nuremberg Code, crimes against humanity, war crimes and crimes of aggression in the United Kingdom, but not limited to individuals in these countries.”

ER: We remind readers that this UK case was made to the ICC after FAILING to gain any traction with it in the British judicial system. It concerns pretty much all aspects of the fake plandemic, including the ‘vaccine’, PCR testing, graphene oxide, masks, inflated statistics, etc., and names names, which are violations, it claims, of the Nuremberg Code and Rome Statute. It’s worth checking out.

Onwards!

RT Germany Has Its Accounts Frozen

ER Editor: Readers may also be interested in hearing about RT France’s woes —Who really killed RT France

Happily, it is still reachable if you have a VPN – https://francais.rt.com/ Regular rt.com is available under the same circumstances, except the folks at RT had the foresight to make the English site available by reversing the letters of RT news so that a VPN isn’t necessary: https://swentr.site/

A reminder of some EU and RT France recent history from this piece about RT France:

After a year of censorship, RT has now had to officially stop its activities in France. But would the French authorities have made this move without the influence of some prominent French journalists who put aside their ethics for the occasion?

From the very beginning, RT France had been a target of the French authorities and the mainstream media.  In a notorious 2017 press conference, Emmanuel Macron, standing next to Vladimir Putin, said RT and Sputnik were “organs of influence and false propaganda.”

Four years later, on 27 February 2022, three days after the beginning of Moscow’s military operation in Ukraine, the non-elected president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, declared that RT and Sputnik were to be banned in the European Union. The attack on free speech was unprecedented. But in order to appease the worried journalist unions, the logic of this attack was such: RT France had its license revoked, but its reporters could keep working. RT France went on to appeal the ban to the European Court of Justice. On 27 July the court rejected the appeal, arguing that the ban did not infringe on free speech. Give an artist the right to paint, but not to exhibit his work. Give a baker the right to make bread, but not to sell it. They will then turn to the black market – in RT France’s case, the internet. Its team of remaining journalists kept working in difficult conditions and broadcasting on Odysee.

I personally know most of them and must say that their attitude, in such a context, has been remarkable. They are not tied to Russia. Some of them aren’t even interested in Russia – they simply wanted to tell the French public about French issues, an opportunity they weren’t given by other French-language media. They know that the world is complex and understand the origins of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. While their management struggled (and managed) to keep paying their salaries, they kept on working, in a state of utter uncertainty and job insecurity, knowing that it would be almost impossible to find new jobs as journalists in France. They are young French men and women who dedicated all these years to only one thing: giving French-speaking audiences another point of view. That was apparently too much for their colleagues in the mainstream media.

On 18 January 2023, “the General Directorate of the Treasury decided to freeze RT France’s bank accounts, making it impossible to continue our activity,” said the president of the channel, Xenia Fedorova. What’s interesting about this new development is that it wasn’t so much a push by the French authorities, who for a while have shown an indifference to the idea of free speech. The French authorities knew that RT France was still operating and did not care, believing it had lost its visibility anyway. The establishment media, however, were not going to just let it slide.

Yes, the mainstream media in France is every bit as bad as it is elsewhere, as elite-funded and influenced.

Now it’s RT DE‘s turn to be defunded and delicensed within the country.

All RT sites have multiple language options and can be viewed in English.

What does any of this sort of action do except to wake people up that they live in a tyrannical society?

RT DE accounts frozen

RT

Despite the government crackdown, the production company vowed to keep producing German-language content

RT’s German production company has had its bank accounts frozen amid an EU-wide crackdown on Russian media. The company was already prohibited by the bloc’s sanctions from carrying out its work in Germany, but said it will continue publishing and broadcasting news online.

“The bank accounts of RT DE Productions have been frozen,” RT’s press service said in a statement on Friday. “Despite this move and the ongoing liquidation of RT DE Productions GmbH, RT DE’s online, broadcast and social media platforms will continue to provide German-speaking readers and viewers across the world with quality content.”

RT Productions GmbH is a German-based company that produces content for the RT DE TV channel and website in Moscow. The firm announced at the beginning of February that it would halt journalistic activities in Germany, due to the “repressive state of media freedoms within the EU.”

An EU sanctions package introduced in December blacklisted RT’s parent company, TV-Novosti, as well as revoking the EU broadcasting licenses of Russian media outlets including NTV, NTV Mir, Rossiya 1, REN TV and Perviy Channel. These measures left RT DE Productions cut off from funding and unable to work in Germany.

RT’s French subsidiary faced a similar situation in January. With its accounts frozen by authorities in Paris, the network shut its doors but continued to broadcast on various online platforms and to publish news in French on its website. While the French government had previously been content to allow RT France to operate, a number of prominent French media outlets campaigned for its closure at the beginning of the year.

Even before the conflict in Ukraine, RT DE faced a difficult legal battle to broadcast in Germany. German banks refused to work with the broadcaster, and regulators in Berlin threatened legal action when the network finally began broadcasting into Germany from Serbia in December 2021.

The regulators eventually blocked RT DE last February, a month before the European Commission ordered a bloc-wide ban on all RT channels and websites. Russia’s Foreign Ministry responded by withdrawing the press accreditation of German state broadcaster Deutsche Welle, and listing the network as a foreign agent.

Fresh Deadly Quake in Turkey – A Continuation of Before?

Fresh Deadly Quake in Turkey – A Continuation of Before?

ER Editor: Here is the Malatya region of Turkey indicated by a red arrow where another earthquake hit yesterday. Previous earthquakes were south / south-west of this area, around Gazientep and into the region where Turkey touches the coast around Syria:

We have published at length on the possibility that HAARP and sabotage were used to destabilize an already earthquake-prone area. Tensions between Turkey and the deep state are running high; scientists in both Turkey and Syria have voiced their concerns in different ways over these earthquakes being unusual or there being a possibility of weather weaponry behind them. An American warship with HAARP capabilities docked in Istanbul on February 3, three days ahead of the first round of major earthquakes. SEARCH

Notice in the RT report below that an earthquake warning has been issued in a veiled way for Istanbul to the west. Is this forewarning of the next one?

***

Was the ‘cyclone’ off the northern coast of New Zealand earlier this month, a secret UN base at Napier, payback and a warning for the first two rounds of earthquakes in the Turkey / Syria region? Windlander posting at Benjamin Fulford’s site appears to think so (half behind a paywall). By whom? China or the white hats are the two possibilities offered. Depicted as a cyclone, the devastation at Napier seems to have received almost zero media coverage. See this report from New Zealand media dated February 14 for visual evidence:

Widespread damage: Cyclone Gabrielle in pictures

Of note from Fulford’s site (publicly available):

Last week China reacted to a massive directed energy weapons (DEW) duel by proposing peace talks to end the undeclared but ongoing, hybrid World War III (ER: This must refer to the 12-point peace plan China put forward). The call came after a devastating Tsunami and earthquake hit a UN military base in a Western country (ER: Napier, New Zealand) in an apparent reaction to the recent earthquake attack on Turkey.

The destruction of a Western city is subject to a complete news black-out (see below for details and evidence) but it was almost certainly caused by DEWs (directed energy weapons) on par with anything the United States can wield.

The Chinese are trying to de-escalate the situation by saying East and West must now choose between mutually assured destruction or mutually assured love.

And

To understand just how powerful these weapons are, the coastline in most countries in the Eastern Mediterranean increased by 7 meters or more and the canals of Venice dried up (ER: check media photos of this – how have we not seen them?). The corporate media is trying to cover this up with tales of drought and low tides but these stories do not hold water (pardon the pun).

Now the Turkish earthquake has been followed by a devastating counter-attack and threats to destroy Switzerland and Israel. Faced with the prospect of total annihilation, the Rothschild family has already agreed to negotiate peace.

This is all proof of nothing, merely interesting speculation or intelligence information that cannot be verified. It’s curious, nonetheless, that a devastating ‘cyclone’ in New Zealand, causing many deaths, has been met with virtual radio silence.

Will Istanbul follow?

Fresh deadly quake in Türkiye

RT

The Turkish emergencies agency AFAD reported a new earthquake in the east, with at least one fatality recorded

A new deadly earthquake hit Türkiye at around midday on Monday, the national disaster relief agency reported. According to preliminary reports, one person has been killed and 69 others injured in the eastern province of Malatya.

The Turkish disaster and emergency management agency AFAD said the tremor measured 5.6 in magnitude, with the epicenter located in the Yesilyurt district. The quake was estimated to have originated at a depth of approximately seven kilometers and could be felt in neighboring provinces, according to the rescue agency.

Initial reports indicate that over 20 buildings have been flattened in this latest disaster to hit Türkiye. Footage circulating online purports to show the collapse of some of the structures.

Some 20 people, including those rescued from the rubble, were taken to hospital in the aftermath, Minister of National Education Mahmut Ozer told the news agency Anadolu. The search and rescue operation continues, AFAD said.

Malatya was among the Turkish provinces that was seriously affected by the twin quakes on February 6, which claimed over 50,000 lives in Türkiye and Syria and caused massive damage in both nations. Many buildings were weakened by the initial disaster, increasing the risk of their collapse in subsequent tremors.

Hundreds of aftershocks followed the initial strike in the ensuing weeks, some lethal in their own right. Last Monday in the evening, several people were killed and hundreds got injured after the already devastated Hatay province was hit.

Türkiye is located in an area where several fault lines pass, making the country vulnerable to seismic events. After this month’s disaster, scientists warned that the risk of a quake similar in strength hitting near the city of Istanbul is increasing with time. The country’s most populous city underwent a period of rapid urbanization in the past decades, but the safety of newly constructed buildings remains in doubt.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on Monday that the government “will do whatever it takes to prepare all our cities for disasters.” It will not permit the construction of high-rise buildings in areas damaged by the quakes and will ban all construction near fault lines, he said.

RUSSIA’S DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE — A REVIEW OF PUTIN’S SPEECH TO RUSSIA’S NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

***

See also this breakdown and big picture commentary from Alexander Mercouris and Alex Christoforou of Putin’s address —

Notes

Mercouris: Something ‘big’ was expected from his speech, which didn’t really happen. If something big is to happen, Putin will state it separately to the country. In this speech, we got a broad picture. Why was the speech given in a Tsarist-era building and not in the Kremlin? More important things: it was all structured but unusually historical. He went through the history of hostile relations with the West and how Russia has dealt with it. Russia is a very historically-minded country, and he brought the entire historical picture up to date. Putin also talked about social policies (Mercouris can’t say much on Youtube so that must refer to LGBT, gay propagandizing of the young, etc.) of the West which Russia decidedly doesn’t want. Putin also talked about the economy and will develop the armed forces without running up huge deficits as happened previously in the Soviet era. The economic news he gave is good: the economy (GDP) only contracted by 2% last year, smaller than during 2015 and the pandemic. 20% had been expected in the West. Russia has absorbed the blow of sanctions better, and employment is good.

The bombshell: we can’t trust the West anymore. They lied over Ukraine, and Minsk and over NATO expansion. They’ve undermined arms control and are no longer working with Russia on the last arms treaty in place. The West is blocking Russia from inspecting US weapons, which it is entitled to do under these treaties. In view of that, it makes no sense to continue with the START treaty – they are suspending it. Transgressions by the US will be met one for one.

Nuclear arms control hangs by a thread and has almost collapsed. During the Cold War, it was a huge topic of concern. It was all laboriously negotiated back then between the two countries. It seems as if we’re on the brink of an uncontrolled arms race. The difference now is that the US has TWO opponents: China as well as Russia. Iran may be joining this pairing. The whole system of international relations is on the brink of collapse. This is the world the Neocons have given us: nuclear weapons are being built at an accelerating rate and controls are collapsing.  Christoforou: But isn’t this what the neocons wanted? Mercouris: yes.

Christoforou: The neocons seem to want to go back to the Cold War era where pressure over weapons was put on the Soviets. It’s like Ukraine to them is what Afghanistan was to the Soviets. It’s the old playbook that, in their minds, led to their victory in the Cold War. But so much has changed. Mercouris: They’re OBSESSED with Russia that they can’t see how the world has changed, and Russia too. The Neocon old guard opposed every arms limitation treaty with the Soviets. They want the world of the 1950s before the Cuban missile crisis when weapons were being produced on a massive scale. They yearn for this and want to return us to this. They are oblivious to the fact that the world has changed: there isn’t just ONE nuclear superpower but more – China, which is huge; Russia, which is producing massive numbers of sophisticated weaponry; N. Korea, Iran and India. The US cannot compete against all of these countries at once. And these countries are now working with each other in trade, etc. So the neocon plan is likely to bankrupt the US than the Russians. It won’t be a repeat of the 80s and 90s. But we need to avoid another Cuban missile crisis. This was very dangerous, so it’s Neocon foolishness, but a return to the past is what they want. Christoforou: Yet it’s good for NATO and the military industrial complex.

Christoforou: Putin made the point that Russia is a country not in debt, that it can spend on the needs of the country, healthcare, infrastructure, etc. Whereas the military spending in the US is so out of control. The US dollar is now being undermined BY THEIR OWN DOING. The neocon actions are forcing the world to MOVE AWAY from the dollar. Mercouris: Russia can absorb more military spending because it’s all well under control and prudent. The old centrally-planned economy of the Soviet era no longer exists. Putin sees it all as an opportunity to build up new factories and plants, and seek new investment in the country. The West has wanted Russia as a commodity producer, merely, so it’s a new challenge for Russia to move ahead with its own economic development and strength.

Christoforou: Putin’s speech was pretty upbeat given all of the current circumstances, i.e. the West’s admitted lies over Minsk (Merkel and Hollande), the blowing up of Nord Stream — statements which have only come out recently. It’s like a huge weight has been lifted off Putin’s shoulders. Mercouris: he seems at peace with himself. Putin has a history of trying to work with the West over many years, holding back on Ukraine. Now he’s vindicated. Likely Russians take this view, too. And notice that Putin only ever talks about the West generically. He never insults individual western leaders. He is never histrionic as Western leaders are toward him. He’s fine with the West doing what it wants for itself, but not dictating things for Russia.

Christoforou: Putin has no need of propaganda convince the Russian people. The West has made the case AGAINST ITSELF in terms of the eyes of the Russian people. Mercouris: They’ve come out and admitted what they’ve done, Merkel being the case in point. And the rest of the world can see this, too. Everybody’s read Seymour Hersh. Putin’s admitted that the majority of Russians can see what is going on, that no witch-hunt among Russians themselves is needed. There’s no hysteria or neurosis that we see in so many western opinion pieces. It’s an extraordinary contrast in international relations where the West is so agitated and Russia is so calm. Which creates an impression around the world.

Finally, there is a rumour that Macron may be ‘moving on’ from politics. Allegedly he’s tired and frustrated over his failing pension reforms; he’s frustrated at working with the French parliament where he has no majority. Christoforou: it may be no more than wish on the part of those spreading the rumours. However, will Macron go the way of Ardern and Sturgeon in Scotland? We’ll see. Rumours about Sturgeon were circulating for months, so it might be possible.

Christoforou: A lot of EU leaders, in fact, may be ‘exhausted’. Mercouris: Yes. The Estonian leader said something about taking over Russians and re-educate them! It’s all hysterical nonsense. It’s getting tiring.

New START is the last surviving agreement from the Cold War era effort to avert nuclear apocalypse

RT

Russia is suspending participation in a key nuclear arms reduction treaty with the US, President Vladimir Putin announced on Tuesday. He cited Washington’s failure to keep its end of the bargain and its deepening involvement in the Ukraine conflict.

The New START Treaty is the last surviving relic of the effort by the US and USSR to avert nuclear annihilation by accepting restrictions on their arsenals and building mutual trust.

Türkiye and Russia developing new payment system – diplomat

An alternative to Russia’s Mir could be developed by summer, an ambassador announced

RT

Moscow and Ankara are working on an alternative to replace the Russian payment system Mir after the US threatened Türkiye with sanctions for servicing its cards, Russia’s ambassador there, Aleksey Yerkhov, said on Thursday.

Mir was developed by the Central Bank of Russia in 2014 as a domestic alternative to Visa and Mastercard, after the first round of sanctions had been imposed on Moscow.

Mir cards had been accepted in Türkiye, Vietnam, Armenia, South Korea, Uzbekistan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, South Ossetia, and Abkhazia. Five Turkish banks adopted the Mir payments network in early August 2022, which allowed Russian tourists to pay for purchases in the country.

But last year, the US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced that it was ready to impose sanctions on any financial institution outside Russia using Mir, citing the “risk of facilitating Russia’s efforts to evade sanctions.”

In response to the US threat, Turkish banks halted the use of the Russian payment system, followed by banks in Kazakhstan and Vietnam.

The Russian ambassador confirmed that “the work [on an alternative to Mir] is underway but it’s too early to announce results,” adding that the countries have to assess the prospects of the upcoming tourist season.

Earlier, the head of the Russian-Turkish Business Council Alexey Yegarmin revealed that an alternative payment system could emerge by summer.
